I need people to stop blaming the death of movies on “quips”. A quip is just a funny line of dialogue. That’s all. Like I just saw a post talking about quips and the death of movies and brought up Pirates of the Caribbean as an example of a better movie and yes it is but also that movie is FULL OF QUIPS. I just rewatched The Princess Bride. It’s all quips. Every single line. And it’s a masterpiece.
Movies suck when people don’t care about the art they’re making. That includes them not caring about their quips. Which is why a lot of comic relief dialogue ALSO sucks now. But the problem isn’t that funny dialogue exists.
Thinking tonight about Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan
Specifically near the end of the novel Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold.
And how she walks into a war-room meeting to which she was of course not invited. Flanking her is her trusty raging psycho manservant. He carries the uterine replicator holding her fetal son, last seen as a hostage in a city in chaos as a pretender to the throne stages a coup. She carries a shopping bag.
“Where have you been?” the men ask. They’re all very busy trying to figure out what to do about the pretender.
“Shopping. Want to see what I bought?” And she upends the bag, and the pretender’s head falls out onto the war room table, bounces and rolls its way to the other end, and falls onto the floor.
This is “I am no man” level Iconic and nobody can tell me otherwise.
When a person with ADHD complains of severe anxiety, I recommend that the clinician not immediately accept the patient’s label for her emotional experience. A clinician should say, “Tell me more about your baseless, apprehensive fear,” which is the definition of anxiety. More times than not, a person with ADHD hyperarousal will give a quizzical look and respond, “I never said I was afraid.” If the patient can drop the label long enough to describe what the feeling is like, a clinician will likely hear, “I am always tense; I can’t relax enough to sit and watch a movie or TV program. I always feel like I have to go do something.” The patients are describing the inner experience of hyperactivity when it is not being expressed physically.
At the same time, people with ADHD also have fears that are based on real events in their lives. People with ADHD nervous systems are consistently inconsistent. The person is never sure that her abilities and intellect will show up when they are needed. Not being able to measure up at the job or at school, or in social circles is humiliating. It is understandable that people with ADHD live with persistent fear. These fears are real, so they do not indicate an anxiety disorder.
I will be honest guys, the Red portrait of king Charles is gorgeous asdfghjkl
it's a bad portrait. Like. Objectively. It does the opposite of what's intended. It looks like the painter is insulting him. If it was in a contemporary gallery with no context you would see it immediately as the ambivalent criticism of Charles's reign, how he fades into the overwhelming red background as a tiny little figure, small and insignificant, insufficient for the clothes he's wearing. It reminds my of Goya's portraits, how they were so 'realistic' that they ended up making these great figures look pathetic to the viewer. So these are our rulers?
the sheer novelty. the surprise and shock, the kinda cunt it's serving for no reason. I. I love it. It's an incredible portrait by Jonathan Yeo. By the sheer fact that Charles, the man, is impossible to portray as greater than man because he's just such a nothingburger of a dude. So a portrait made to make him look huge and interesting made him be swallowed in red brushstrokes. The butterfly, that reminded me immediately of " we will all laugh at guilded butterflies", draws more attention than him. It looks like an omen. It looks like a warning in all this red. Something is not right here.
I feel like something that really works for Dungeon Meshi is that all the characters are good at their jobs from the beginning. At the start of the show/manga the Touden party is one of the best parties in the business.
They got wiped in the first episode/chapter, but they got wiped on the 6th floor where we don't see another party on a floor lower than the 5th, castle town, even then the only group we meet is Shiro's who was part of the original party and super skilled. Shiro is an expert swordsman who went to the dungeon to test himself, he was the best fighter in the party and the ace to deal killing blows to dragons. Namari is a dwarf who is likely a better fighter than Senshi and takes better care of her equipment. Laios is a good fighter, maybe not the best, but he is good an super knowledgeable. Falin and Marcille are two top class mages, Marcille might be inexperienced as a practical caster, but by the time the series starts she is very powerful. Chilchuck is the leader/creator of the half-foot union, he is good at his job and has survived since he was a wide eyed kid to a grizzled old man who looks like a kid to other races. they were stacked at the start of the series and it makes sense why they are well known in adventurers circles.
They aren't newbies who are blessed with plot armor and being the main characters of the story. They are very powerful and experienced adventurers who just happen to meet the most powerful monster in the dungeon on empty stomachs. Even once the series starts, they're at a disadvantage not because they're lacking skills, just they lose two of the parties best fighters. Marcille, the parties mage, is easily able to knock out/kill a running mushroom that was giving a party of noobs a thrashing.
I get why a lot of stories start with young inexperienced kids, but sometimes its nice to read stories that star older heroes who are good at their jobs instead of something like a rookie red ranger situation. Especially now that I'm older
The events of the last few weeks with Lore.FM have made a few things glaringly clear:
1) There is a need within fandom to utilize TTS technology for a variety of reasons
2) Many folks (through no fault of their own) are unaware of what TTS technology is available how that to improve their experience
3) Podfics are not as widely known and circulated as I assumed
In light of that, I have made a very basic guide. It is in no way a finished product or definitive, just my effort to make a positive out of a negative. It covers iPhone built in TTS, Edge Browser for mobile and desktop, Android Reading Mode, other user-suggested Android apps, and podfics. I would love to add more and encourage you to contact me with suggestions or feedback. This was put together in a wild rush and off of mine and my family’s experience with these tools, so I fully expect deficiencies and flaws. The Edge and iPhone options contain a demo with a short snippet of my own work to show how it functions. I don’t have one of these for Android but if someone would like to coordinate a recording, I am happy to add it.
Special thanks to the users on the AO3 subreddit who suggested apps and podcast archives or were willing to test. Y’all rock. The original link now contains a link to take you to the updated guide.
THESIS: the real reason that people stay on this hellsite is not “chronological order” or “the drama” or whatever (per se), but is instead linked to how tumblr, unlike most social media, is not optimised to give content as short of a half-life as possible, but instead is optimised to let content continue to cycle for months, years, even decades. this has in turn led to a more consistent centralised site “culture” in which there is more coherent linkage among different areas of the site, thus also explaining why its content permeates so thoroughly throughout the internet.
sometimes i feel a little guilty reblogging those fake chinese homesteader tiktoks bc i don't think most people realize theyre all staged sets and not actually indicative of a capitalism escape fantasy but frankly theyre fun and relaxing to watch and i enjoy seeing traditional practices being done so who give a shit
i think one of the most important things to realize in order to stay sane within the fandom is that you and some people actually are watching a completely different show. there’s always going to be someone who interprets and understands the canon story in a completely different way than you and there’s no amount of discourse or fighting that can change that.
