can i ask what games inspired you to create your machine sex simulator?? i'm so thrown after that experience but also i feel like we have similar muses
short answer: polytope (and the concept of strawberry jam), it's as if you were making love, and aesthetically some of misericorde, concrete flesh and pathologic classic. ultrakill 7-2 and 7-4 and portal if you reach far enough back.
long answer:
ok so the machine game is very much an extension of the art i've been making for the past year+, which i've been simply calling the plain. the point of those works is exploring art that is certainly erotic but as far from human / organic as i can get. this is something i started on a whim: i was painting yves tanguy derivatives as an evolution of my abstract work inspired by radiolarian skeletons, while vaguely getting into drawing erotic art as well, and figured i'd combine the two and see what happened. i'd already come across some abstractly horny work and figured it'd be an interesting venue to investigate.
this is pretty challenging to depict visually, where i'm pretty commited to keeping things ambiguous and mysterious: i don't want to make any obvious "this is like a penis, this is like a vagina", yknow, the whole point is exploring sexuality beyond what we conceptualize as sex and erotica. this honestly might have been even harder when it came to writing, since i specifically wanted to avoid anthropomorphizing the machine by comparing its reactions to human arousal ("the machine wishes it could shiver" was my one exception to this), since i didn't want human sexuality to be a baseline that the abstract sex deviates from. yknow? and all the while with little fiction writing experience and even less with sex scenes.
the lust route was easier in this regard, in part because this is a theme i've written about before, twice (or more, depending on how you slice it). i don't think i'll ever run out of words to say i'm hopelessly lonely. the hunger route was a little harder: writing an abstract thing actively experiencing pleasure when you're not in its pov, when the whole point of the route is that the machine wants the thing to feel like heaven was certainly an exercise. tenuous connection to shuzo oshimi's welcome back alice for this specifically but that's its own can of worms.
some non-game influences, with a focus on what you can see in this game, to varying degrees:
the big three painters: yves tanguy, kay sage and alicia adamerovich
tsutomu nihei's work, a romance in knights of sidonia in particular
tsukumizu's shimeji simulation
the final chapters of haruko ichikwa's land of the lustrous
@charseraph's work
david cronenberg's whole deal of course
melannen's a discourse on inversion among the inhabitants of flatland
voltaic resonance's my casual god
brian ripley page's body after body
isabel fall's i sexually identify as an attack helicopter
hailey piper's all the hearts you eat, in part because i finished it right before i started making the game
paul b preciado's countersexual manifesto
horny mech posting in general
the idea of siphonophores and other colonial organisms, paired with artificial intelligences whose bodies are entire structures
pretty much everything on my the plain tag on the sideblog
i hope this answers your question! i find it a bit tricky to single out specific influences on specific works, because everything is very interconnected to me, but i think this should be most of it without going into absolutely tangential shit like every single moody bw film i've ever watched (especially david lynch's style) or half the short indie vns i've ever played (though i feel a shoutout might be warranted for milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk, 59 fucks the machine and girl purgatoriem) ^_^
#i just played polytope + its as if you were making love + concrete flesh. and i am slowly making my way through more#for anyone reading this click those links theyre free go play go play them go play the games#op u have truly put together such a delicacy of media here#part of my short film im working on is heavily inspired by signalis because i got addicted to the OST or something#this all feels same vibes and im excited to slowly break out of my only-play-signalis jail
