I really like the thought that went into this scene. These are young, single women living on limited means. They grew up during the Great Depression, and instinctively stockpile as much food as they can whenever they can get it, especially if it would otherwise go to waste. They trade tips, support each other's methods, and share when someone is in need. Peggy may not have the same hoarding urges, but she can recognize and respect their ingenuity.
