drabble for @hoziermicrofics may day sixteen prompt: meadow 100 words, rated G, james/lily @jilymicrofics

Yellows rolled over the meadow, early summer-green leaves. Lily’s dress blew with the yellow, her straw hat flying. James shouted, running rather than summoning; Lily knew he was smiling, goofily triumphant even before he rescued her hat. The grin when he turned, his easy laughter at the sight of her anew; he was too easy to love. He’d ran to fix her problems as she stood still. Lily was not easy to love. 

James kissed the tip of her nose when he reached her, hat returned. 

It seemed easy for him to love her, but everything seemed easy for James.

I did a lot of research for this one and I thought it’d be a shame not to share a bit of it, bc I love fashion history and talking; also, I have a large fashion history pinterest board that I update semi-regularly where most of my inspiration for these looks can be found, if that’s something you’re interested in! All of these links will send you to that board or museum archives- now:

- Lottie is wearing a colorswapped version of this 1973 ensemble dress which reminded me of the flannel coat we see on Travis, Nat, and Lottie in the Wilderness. Her updo is partially inspired by Gladys Knight’s high half-ponytail. Makeup among teens and young women was often rosy, nude or frosty, and sometimes way too bright

- Natalie’s general vibe is pretty much unchanged, though more typical of the rock/early punk scene. Punk subculture hit its stride around ‘77/78, so to avoid big anachronisms Nat is wearing a Stooges tee and a Grateful Dead pin, bands I think she’d listen to in any timeline. Her outfit is inspired by several pics of general 70’s punks I have saved in the 70’s board. Chokers with with and w/o pendants were a trend (I almost went with a heart choker for Jackie bc they were so common). Nat’s sporting the Ace of Spades instead

- Misty’s outfit is actually based on a preteen outfit from this 1972 Sears catalog- I thought maybe she’d be a bit out of the loop on actual fashion trends among other teens. I imagined that with less products and styling info available Misty might not know how to tame her curls besides brushing them and slicking down the frizz on top, with mixed results: not 70’s but based on this. Also, in the 70’s you could throw a rock and hit 99 people wearing tortoiseshell glasses in a five mile radius, so these ones are based on some different pairs wore by Peggy Carter

- Shauna has a casual and comfortable wardrobe in canon so I opted from something loose with neutrals and darks for Shipman moodiness. Her outfit is a mash of these two. I was really searching for early 70’s examples of the stereotypical matching ‘bestfriends’ necklaces and couldn’t find much in the style I was hoping for, so instead Shauna has her own gem-style heart necklace

- Taissa is in casual sportswear with her soccer cleats, based on the adidas 1975 LEEDS football cleat- I’m no expert on what cleats would have been available in the US in 1975 New Jersey though. Canon Tai favors long hair in the pre-crash and adult timelines so I referenced singer Fayette Pinkney from girl group the Three Degrees and some looks from Diana Ross. Her baseball tee is a (handmade) screen printing based off of signs from women’s liberation marches at the time. Handmade jewelry was also popular across the decade so she has a matching tie bracelet with Van ofc

- Van’s outfit is an alteration of the mannequin repping these insane pants in the Met archive. Her jewelry and accessories are similar to adult Van’s (loves a chain), who also favors long hair. She gets to keep her Converse, green this time!

- Jackie’s fit is a suede two piece paired with a culmination of these beautiful Montgomery Ward boots. Big hair was building momentum before its peak in the 80’s, and despite referencing 70’s teenagers while drawing I think it turned out a little Dolly Parton-esque, mother of hair. The heart necklace she wears has opal accents and the boots feature orange and red poppies, daisies, and pink carnations :)
