Always bring an offering. Woodland deities might twist your paths if you come empty-handed.
The woods will remember you from the first step you take into them. Stay kind and respectful.
Should you hear any footsteps behind you, do not look there. Take a step to the side and with a respectful bow say “after you”. You never know what spirits may cross your path.
Never stray away from crows. When old gods have their eyes on you, you’re safe.
If you ever stumble on a shiny knick-knack, pick it up and put it in the closest tree hollow but never take it with you. Dragons are persistent in looking for their belongings.
Do not ever bring anything that might create a sound (like a keychain). Ringing might raise the dead.
If you meet a beautiful young woman, look for her cow tail. Only then will you be able to go back home.
At night, you might hear a loud howl. Do not be afraid, it’s still chained up.
You might meet blind women who spin yarn. Never ask them questions and do not follow the yarn.
Squirrels love stories and will gladly listen but be careful what you say: they will retell them to the eagles.
Leave toadstools be. Trolls grow very fond of them.
If you stumble on an outstandingly big tree with a human-sized hollow, do not enter. You do not know what realm lies on the other side.
Should you hear a baby crying, leave immediately, do not ever follow it. It will ask you for a grave.
An older lady with a broom is a very bad sign.
Try to cross streams as fast as possible. You’re being watched.
If you see a shovel in a random place, do not move it. Whoever is buried next to it might need it one day.
The best way to befriend a fairy is to flatter her. Do not, however, mistake a fairy with a pixie.
Deer with blue antlers will not be afraid of you. They mark the end of human realm.
Don’t throw pebbles on big rocks. You do not want to wake them up.
If you see a cat carrying a patch of moss, do not stop it. Witches are quite impatient.
Omit single graves. Even the dead like company.
You might see silhouettes in the corners of your eyes. Human presence flusters them, so do not be afraid.
If you close your eyes and hear someone telling you to open them, do not. Good spirits will never ask to be seen. Evil, however, will love to.
In case of an earthquake, hide. Giants do not look where they’re going.
Remember that you’re only a guest and should not leave anything besides footsteps.
