another rant time this time more about jean and neil
(now before the actual rant—I DO NOT SHIP JEAN AND NEIL WHATSOEVER. on that same note i also personally dont ship kandreil, kejean, etc what so ever. i personally prefer the canon ships... except for renee × allison i’m sorry those two are literally in love)
ANYWAYS like everyone else in this fandom i am absolutely obsessed with the platonic soulmates and misplaced forever partners that is jean and neil.
Because what do you mean that while jean was stuck in the nest, being tortured day in and day out, he knew out there somewhere was the person who was supposed to endure all of this with him escept instead they were "free" in the real world. and what do you mean that when he finally got to meet neil—and actually have him in the nest with him for a little while—it gave him a glimpse of what it could’ve been like all those years if he hadn’t been alone just to then have it ripped away from him and made 10x worse in the nest.
and the ravens used him having his misplaced forever partner for alittle bit against him.
they held it against him that he couldn’t even make neil stay and that riko still chose to mark neil.
like?? jean got blamed for something so far out of his control while neil had no idea the weight of what he meant to jean. but still—when neil finally met jean, he looked out for him.
even after neil escaped the nest and left jean behind, he still made sure to protect him.
he bargained not just his own life with ichirou—but jean’s (and kevins) too.
and then Neil was also the only one to make sure jean’s monsters actually stayed dead.
AND if that wasnt enough in tsc—when they’re meeting with Stuart and the fbi and neil learns about jean’s sister he doesn’t push jean to talk about it instead he still tries to protect him by giving him space and asking what he needs.
like their friendship makes me ILL. they will forever be connected. even if their paths crossed in a different way than they were supposed to, they still found each other. and that matters.
---
also bonus headcanon:
i think andrew, in his own quiet way, tries to protect jean too.
not just because jean matters to neil, but because andrew sees pieces of himself in jean. he knows that kind of pain. so even if it’s subtle, even if it’s never talked about, i think andrew looks out for him.

time to rant about jean moreau cause he’s my favorite aftg character :)
it makes me so unbelievably sad to think about how he never got to be a child and live his life for himself. because before the Nest, he was Elodie’s only protector. a child protecting a child. and then—against his will—he was ripped away from her, left feeling like he failed her, even though he had no choice. he was thrown into a place where he barely knew the language and punished for it. punished for something he couldn’t control.
and then again—for being bi? punished.
for neil not staying? punished.
for not wanting to live? punished.
he was constantly being taught that no matter what he does or doesn’t do—even if it’s completely out of his control—he will be punished. even being taken from the Nest, while it was the best thing that could’ve happened for him (even though he didn’t want it), he was still punished.
for trying to heal.
finally, with the Trojans, he starts to feel safe. he’s healing. he’s trying. but the Ravens and the press come for him again. he gets punished again. and so do the people around him—Cat, Laila, Jeremy—for things the Ravens do. they got disqualified (the ravens), and so Jean, cat, laila, and jermey loose the only place that felt like home to them. and Jean genuinely thought he was going to lose the people he cared about too. because of course he thought they’d blame him. everyone always has.
and that’s why i think he and jeremy work so well together. because jeremy is so similar, even though he hides it better.
He’s punished by his own family just for being who he is. instead of helping him with his drug problem—they ignored it. Instead of listening to him beg them to help his brother—they ignored that too. And he was punished for it. they took exy away from him. they forced him into law school. they punished him for being gay by calling him slurs and literally convincing his boyfriend to leave him.
they’re both such severely hurt characters. and their healing looks so different.
jean is slowly, carefully starting to heal.
jeremy is still trapped.
and idk. that’s just why i love the new trilogy so much. It gives these characters so much depth and complexity—it lets them exist with all their pain and softness and fear.
and i just find jean especially so tragic, because he wants to heal. but he’s scared. so instead, he pushes everything down and endures it, because if it all crumbles again, at least he’ll be ready. at least it won’t catch him off guard.
and god, that just hurts so bad.

📣 Calling all AFTG fans! 📣
So I’m rereading The Sunshine Court and The Golden Raven for the thousandth time (as one does), and I realized something: Nora never actually specified Min Cai’s gender
When I first read the series, I pictured them as a girl—but then I started seeing fanart where they’re drawn as a guy and now I’m second-guessing everything
I’m working on a video summary of the new trilogy and I’m stuck trying to figure out whether to give Min Cai a more feminine or masculine face claim. Soooo…
What does other memebers of the fandom think? How do you picture Min Cai?
Drop your thoughts, headcanons, or fav art interpretations—I wanna hear it all!!

“Adam finally sat down on one of the pews. Laying his cheek against the smooth back of it, he looked at Ronan. Strangely enough, Ronan belonged here, too, just as he had at the Barns.
This noisy, lush religion had created him just as much as his father's world of dreams; it seemed impossible for all of Ronan to exist in one person. Adam was beginning to realize that he hadn't known Ronan at all. Or rather, he had known part of him and assumed it was all of him. The scent of Cabeswater, all trees after rain, drifted past Adam, and he realized that while he'd been looking at Ronan, Ronan had been looking at him.”

Queer Book Recommendations
Every once in a while I like sharing some queer book recommendations on here as I read a lot and I get requests to share some of the books I love, so here we go!
Tell Me I’m Worthless: Three years ago, Alice spent one night in an abandoned house with her friends Ila and Hannah. Since then, things have not been going well. Alice is living a haunted existence, selling videos of herself cleaning for money, going to parties she hates, drinking herself to sleep. She hasn’t spoken to Ila since they went into the House. She hasn’t seen Hannah either.
Our Wives Under The Sea: Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. It soon becomes clear, though, that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home.
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty: Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again. It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.
Silver Under Nightfall: Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.
Disintegrate/Dissociate: In her powerful debut collection of poetry, Arielle Twist unravels the complexities of human relationships after death and metamorphosis. In these spare yet powerful poems, she explores, with both rage and tenderness, the parameters of grief, trauma, displacement, and identity. Weaving together a past made murky by uncertainty and a present which exists in multitudes, Arielle Twist poetically navigates through what it means to be an Indigenous trans woman, discovering the possibilities of a hopeful future and a transcendent, beautiful path to regaining softness.
The Perks of Loving a Wallflower: As a master of disguise, Thomasina Wynchester can be a polite young lady—or a bawdy old man. She’ll do whatever it takes to solve the cases her family takes on. But when Tommy’s beautiful new client turns out to be the highborn lady she’s secretly smitten with, more than her mission is at stake …
It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror: Horror movies hold a complicated space in the hearts of the queer community: historically misogynist, and often homo- and transphobic, the genre has also been inadvertently feminist and open to subversive readings. Common tropes—such as the circumspect and resilient “final girl,” body possession, costumed villains, secret identities, and things that lurk in the closet—spark moments of eerie familiarity and affective connection. Still, viewers often remain tasked with reading themselves into beloved films, seeking out characters and set pieces that speak to, mirror, and parallel the unique ways queerness encounters the world.
Refusing Compulsory Sexuality: A Black Asexual Lens on Our Sex-Obsessed Culture: Everything you know about sex and asexuality is (probably) wrong. The notion that everyone wants sex–and that we all have to have itis false. It’s intertwined with our ideas about capitalism, race, gender, and queerness. And it impacts the most marginalized among us. For asexual folks, it means that ace and A-spec identity is often defined by a queerness that’s not queer enough, seen through a lens of perceived lack: lack of pleasure, connection, joy, maturity, and even humanity.
