I don't wanna @ anyone because I understand how fast things seem to move in today's landscape of streaming shows dropping entire seasons in one day, and networks pumping out new series constantly to try to attract more subscribers with no intent to actually maintain those shows over time but I just saw someone self-deprecatingly lament that they are still thinking about a show that ended almost a year ago, making fan art and playlists for it, and I want to be very clear:
you can still create fanworks when it comes to old media!! PLEASE do!! there are always going to be new fans who will appreciate it, and veteran fans who are dying for new content and new perspectives. also, less than a year is NOTHING. the original Star Trek series was on TV six decades ago and there are still people losing their minds over it, writing stories and reblogging gifsets daily, and that's only one example.
a fandom lasts as long as there are people who love a thing, even if it's only a handful of people. love what you love and write and draw and make gifs and playlists about it!

want to be clear that if i ever talk about a headcanon and then later discuss a headcanon that is directly contradictory to the first one, that’s because headcanons exist in a quantum state where they are all simultaneously true and not true up until the point where i discuss it in detail, in which case that is the one that is true in that instance. schroedinger’s headcanons
#writing#characters#headcanons#i mostly just rotate my blorbos in my mind these days#so they are all in quantum superposition these days

Sometimes, ya just gotta make do with what you have

I decided I wanted to give bobbin lace a try but didn't want to invest a ton of money in case I didn't like it so here has been my solution. I've drawn all the patterns by hand on regular notebook paper, and am pinning into my laptop case. The only money I've spent was on one pack of pencils for $1 (which I'll use anyway), an enormous spool of yarn $5 (bought at a thrift shop), and one pack of pins $6 (which I'll also use anyway).
I'm enjoying it so far, but still undecided if I want to spend more money on it. Real bobbins and a pillow would be soooo helpful though. But its been encouraging how much I've been able to learn already with just these materials!

So for all of you who think nothing matters:
We have a local, I guess I'll call it an events complex. It's where concerts and the fair go. It's owned by the city.
When Trump started the whole ICE thing, our commissioner sent a letter to the local representatives, telling them they could use it as a detention center for illegal immigrants. Our event center. Where the 4H kids show their fuckin' lambs.
"The fuck you will" was the resounding reply.
So, when I talk about coalition-building, and working with people you do not agree with or maybe even like, this is what I'm talking about. There was an immediate and vocal show of disapproval, from all sides. We all contacted people we knew would dislike this, REGARDLESS OF HOW THEY FELT ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE. The meeting was packed with people yelling at the commissioners. Of all political stripes. Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Prairie Populist, Independent.
Some were, of course, the tumblr-style arguments about inherent humanity, but--I think more compellingly if you're actually trying to put the pressure on--there were questions of, 'How are we gonna get paid?" "Are you aware of how, as the only event center for more than two hours, much fuckin money this brings into the community? ANd that immigrants of all types make up less than 2% of the population of the entire state?(my argument), "Do we trust the government to pay us?", "Isn't there a fuckin' empty prison in [town about an hour from here]? Are you just being a kiss-ass?' (offered up by a man I know to be very conservative indeed. BUT HE DID NOT WANT OUR SPACE USED FOR THIS) and, an argument that was so good I was infuriated I didn't come up with it, "DO you think the bank is gonna want to be known as the sponsor of "National bank Detention Center?" (Which caught on and the bank had to offer up a letter saying how they hoped the commissioners would use the event center as intended.)
They folded. A letter came out a few days ago from the manager of the event center, saying it was decided that the events center would rescind the offer, as "more acceptable alternatives could be found." They blinked.
That's the thing. All that happened is that a bunch of people got mad an went to ONE TWO HOUR MEETING. It changed everything.
SHOW. UP.

And if you're wondering on the issue of science funding, who's organizing calls and protests, the unions are imo, doing the best. It's the importance of having existing networks.

Hey friends.
I know there’s a lot going on right now, but this is just to say that I, and an entire generation of scientists, are fucked. Legal challenges are great, but for a lot of us it’s going to come too late to save our jobs. People who lost their funding already for daring to mention diversity in their grants will be the first to go as the universities have way less money to cover us while we re-apply. Scientific work that took years to create, destroyed in weeks.
“Indirect costs” by the way are just money for things like janitorial services, maintenance, HVAC and HR that the university and the government agree in a set rate for the whole institution so every fucking scientist doesn’t have to calculate what fraction of the fucking heating they use and put that in their budget, because that would be a huge waste of time. The only reason private funding can pay lower indirects is because the government money is subsidizing the facilities.
I’m trying to keep fighting when what I really need is to take leave for a surgery, but I can't stop, can't let my community down, can't take the risk of not putting everything into finding a different job.
#us politics#science#there are so many reasons why this is bad for everyone#missed opportunities to save lives and all#but also I've been so disconnected from the people I care about on here#so this is just to say whats up#and im trying to get by

I needed this today. It's been a long one, but I was glad I had union posters to put up after my boss left. All this time organizing and then to go public at such a wild time. It's good to have something to do. If everything I did in the past 4 years crumbles without funding, the organizing, the community building is still worth it.
I made this, please feel free to use

the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck
