Mermay day 3: Nishikigoi (koi)

Koi fish trace their lineage to the humble common carp, first domesticated in East Asia over a millennium ago. In 19th-century Japan, rice farmers began carefully breeding these carp for their rare and beautiful colorations, giving rise to the exquisite ornamental koi. Their captivating beauty and cultural significance captured global admiration after their debut at the Tokyo Taishō Exposition in 1914.

One of my favorite parts about traveling through Erebus is getting to stop and chat with Arachne, as well as dressing Melinoë up all pretty for her upcoming fights!

I’d no idea we’d be drawn together when we first met.

Emmrich and Rook’s (Laelia) wedding, not long after the events of the game.

Not much to tell on the process of this one! The pose was inspired by the dance scene between Emma and Mr Knightly from the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. My Rook (Laelia) is heavily inspired by Jane Austen’s ladies, so it felt right.

The biggest hurdle with this illustration was the filigree background. I hid the figure sketches and drew the whole thing to make sure everything was logically laid out. I occasionally enabled the figures to make sure it complemented them and didn’t overpower them. It was definitely a balancing act! Once I was done with one side, I duplicated it and flipped it. Work smarter, not harder! Still took ages though lol.

Little bonus! You’d never know there was a heart behind them, would you? :)
