Inspired by recent travels to Paris, Katherine Cone Gallery is pleased to present a summer group exhibition, titled Rouge. The exhibition consists of original works of art that will include the color red by renowned artists Edith Baumann, Sean Cheetham, John Eden, EL MAC, Shepard Fairey, John Van Hamersveld, Brad Howe, Eric Pedersen, DeWain Valentine, and Suzan Woodruff.
Rouge, The French word for "red,” is a color commonly associated with passion, fire, beauty, danger, sacrifice, anger, and in some places happiness. It can be used as an expression, as in “seeing red” meaning to be enraged. Likewise, it can be a symbol of love and entertainment, such as the Moulin Rouge, a Paris cabaret known for it’s seductive dancing and famously marked by the red windmill on its roof.
Whether it means anger to one or love to another or is envied simply for the beauty of the pigment itself, the color red carries a powerful energy with it. Each of these ten artists has defined in their own context what the color red signifies to them. Please join us for a reception for the artists Saturday, July 20th, from 6-9 p.m. TheRouge exhibition will run from July 20th until August 24th, 2013.
For more information on the show please visit www.katherineconegallery.com. Katherine Cone Gallery is located at 2673 South La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, California 90034. Gallery hours are Tuesday throughSaturday 11-6pm. For inquiries please contact [email protected].

Katherine Cone Gallery is pleased to present SELFISH, a group exhibition curated by renowned painter Sean Cheetham. The exhibition includes self-portrait paintings by artists Sean Cheetham, Julio Reyes, Candice Bohannon Reyes, Sergio Sanchez, Wayne Johnson, Kevin Llewellyn, Hollis Dunlap, Sonya Palencia, Jeff Nentrup, Jonathan Hart, EL MAC, Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught, Ryan Cheetham, Kate Savage, Eric Pedersen, Marc Trujillo, Johnpaul Altamirano, Stephen Schirle, and Richard Morris.
The self-portrait has been a popular form of expression ever since man first saw his own reflection. Tragic and triumphant, self-portraits can reveal a telling story. From rags to riches, through sickness and health, from youth to old age, we can witness the changing face of an artist.
Intrinsically linked to identity, the self-portrait ultimately stands to reveal something deeper about the creator- an exploration of self and an examination of one's own conscious thoughts and feelings. At times, an artist feels they must repeatedly create a self-portrait in an effort to further research their inner-self and perhaps search for answers within the painted image. Famous painters from Rembrandt to van Gogh have relied on self-portraiture as a method to intensely study the self through art.
SELFISH showcases the exploration of self-perception through the medium of painting by twenty-one master painters. Please join us for a reception for the artists Saturday, May 4th, from 6-9 p.m. The SELFISH exhibition opens May 4th and will run until June 22nd, 2013.

Edith Baumann's Jazz Notes in Art Scene
October 20 - November 17, 2012 at Katherine Cone Gallery, Culver City by Mario Cutajar
Edith Baumann’s deceptively minimal paintings are the product of a slow layering process that hides its own complexity in the same way that a tree trunk or a pearl hides the vagaries of an organism’s interaction with its environment under what to a cursory glance is a generic exterior. In both cases, what appears pared down to a simple geometric order is actually the product of the accumulation of near countless minute chaotic events into each of which seeps a little bit of chance or what the French call hasard, a word that reminds us of chance’s association with risk.

Katherine Cone Gallery is pleased to present Jazz Notes, a solo exhibition of new works by artist Edith Baumann, opening October 20th and continuing until November 17th, 2012. Please join us for an artist's reception on Saturday, October 20th from 5-8pm. Some scientists claim that creativity thrives when nature is out of balance. This is apparent with the latest works displayed by Edith Baumann in Jazz Notes. Structure and randomness is greatly emphasized in her paintings. It’s not always about playing the right notes all the time nor is random always a bad thing. Paradoxically, it can be controlled, and instilled with contextual meaning. The balanced, yet unbalanced nature of Baumann's work with its minimal, yet intricate form, assist with the overall theme of structure and randomness. Baumann uses a small brush and many layers as part of her meditative process when painting. The simple appearance of her pieces are in stark contrast to their complex beginnings. By grinding her own pigment and slowly adding acrylic disperser, she achieves a very raw, very visceral mood and emotion in her work. The addition of different color layers help the fields to breathe while paint applied by hand enlivens the edges. Edith Baumann received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Jazz Notes is her first solo exhibition since her 2011 show at Modernism in San Francisco. She has been featured in several group exhibitions in the past year including Marks and Movement: 5 Painters at Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery in Santa Monica, Ed's Party: A Sphere of Influence in the LA Art Scene at William Turner Gallery, and a two person group show with Peter Alexander at Joe's Restaurant in Venice, Ca. 'Legitimate Rape: Political Art In 2012' Comes To Katherine Cone Gallery
An upcoming exhibition at Katherine Cone Gallery in Los Angeles uses the phrase as a launch pad to investigate political topics, future possibilities and the polarizing red-blue divide in this country today. For instance, in "Entitled," photographer Jill Greenberg created a terrifying projection of older white men in power ties laughing heartily. Their well-fed chins bounce up against their fancy suit collars, casting the GOP regulars as comical villains. J. Homer French: Peace on Earth
OPENING RECEPTION: SEPTEMBER 8TH, 5-8PM
J. Homer French; Peace on Earth #11; Watercolor; 22 x 30 inches J. Homer French; Airforce; Oil on canvas; 48 x 54 inches View Exhibition Preview
Katherine Cone Gallery is pleased to present Peace on Earth, a solo exhibition displaying the world and works of artist J. Homer French, curated by Billy Al. The exhibition opens September 8th and is on view until October 6th, 2012. Please join us for a reception for the artist Saturday, September 8th, from 5-8pm. J. Homer French often paints roadkill, Stealth Bombers, dead fish, and, in fact, the dead in general. She had her first one-woman show on N. La Cienega: creepy-ass scenes of her presumably creepy-ass childhood in upstate New York. The LA Times reviewer Henry Seldis, called her “an artist that offers visual and perceptual surprises” with “the sincerity of folk art plus the modernity and humor of pop.” (That actually sounds pretty cool.)* After that show, somebody else, an artist whose name nobody can remember, called her “ a regional narrative” painter. That guy either didn’t get it at all, or nailed it. J. Homer French paints what we see everyday without actually seeing it. Wind turbines rise up in the desert, just outside LA, to power our houses. A deer gets hit on the Hwy 395, and quietly decomposes on the side of the road. A big fish eats a little fish, and maybe it’s still alive for a second in there, because nature is unfeeling and sinister. Scrappy pines cover scrappy hills all around Los Angeles, and while they might not be on fire now, perhaps tomorrow, or next week, they could be. Earthquake fault lines snake beneath our feet. J. Homer French sews maps of them to hang over our beds, because a) the big one's coming, and b) do you want some gargantuan painting to fall on your head, or a soft, handmade 'Mapestry'? J. Homer French’s latest icon is Stealth Bombers. They edge into landscapes, seascapes, and turbine farms the way that scary shit, like war, and the familiar unknowable to us, edges into our heads. She paints what’s there, but not what we’re seeing, or maybe what we don’t want to see. ** California, the Northwest, mountains and deserts: these places are beautiful, and that beauty is here. There is also something tougher, tougher to find and tougher to grapple with. Peace on Earth. *It is believed that this was also the artist’s reaction to that review. **"You wanna know how to look at a painting? Just fucking look at it." – Billy Al Bengston For images from the show please visit www.katherineconegallery.com. Katherine Cone Gallery is located at 2673 S. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90034. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10-6pm. For sales inquiries please contact [email protected]. Media Contact: T: 310.287.1558 [email protected] www.katherineconegallery.com
