Planning for Assessment #3
After visiting the museum, my group and I discussed on which weekly topic we should pick. We decided to go with the idea of ‘desire’ since we had just seen artworks related to this theme. At first, we thought of creating an interactive piece where the audience could not interact. We thought of this idea by thinking about the big fluffy piece in the museum. We decided to abandon this idea because we would only have a week to construct a big sculpture. Instead, I suggested the idea of smell. After visiting the museum, I really liked the work with all the spices.
Image of the work:
This artwork is created by Ernesto Neto and he wants “people to see [his] sculpture through their pores, as well as their eyes, to feel it with all their senses”.
The paragraph explaining his work:
Based on that, I realized that we could make our own ‘desirable’ perfume. We could create this as a group and it would smell desirable. The event, in this case, would be a farmers market.
At first, this seemed like it was an easy topic. However, we tackled many problems. We did some research to find out what some desirable scents were. We found that the common scents described in all of the sources were Vanilla, Lavender, and lemongrass. Although these are desirable scents, you can already purchase them from outside. We wanted to do something that was a little different.
We then moved onto the idea of using essential oils. As a group, we visited a store and smelt different essential oils.
It wasn’t hard finding cheap essential oil, but it had a very artificial smell. We wanted to create something that was more natural.
We then came back as a group to discuss what we could change or do next. We figured that we could pervade a scent into a classroom using natural materials. Since this is a 9 AM class, we decided that we could have a breakfast event in the class. We would blend fresh oranges to make juice. We were keen on this idea on multiple levels, because orange and citrus is also a desirable scent. We would present this idea by laying out our breakfast on a table. We would bring in many oranges and cups to suggest that it is for everyone. However, only we will be able to consume the juice. This will add onto their desire because although it smells good, they will not be able to consume it. Another idea we are playing with is the senses. When multiple senses are involved, things become more desirable.
Although we seemed to be settled on this idea, we thought of something even better (two days before the assessment). Although the ideas are similar, we expanded on our first idea. Instead of blending orange juice, we will set up a table beautifully with plates and cutlery. In the center of the table, we will place breakfast food with a sign that says “do not touch”. We will then place air-fresheners in front of fans to make the scent of breakfast pervade the room. Therefore, we will be able to smell ‘breakfast’, but we won’t actually be able to eat it. This creates a desire for breakfast because human beings have the tendency to desire what they can’t have. We also decided to buy our air fresheners from Woolies because they have bakery and citrus scents. This is perfect because bakery products and orange juice are commonly consumed during breakfast.
Therefore, the event, in this case, is people coming into a restaurant/cafe to eat breakfast. The event is revolved around the idea of breakfast because this is a 9 AM class. We will bring plates and cutlery for 6 people only. The rest of the class will be the audience observing what is going on. Once the 6 people sit in their seats, we will present them with menus that we made.
Here is an image of the menu we are going to hand them:
As you can see, there is no price for the dishes listed. We purposely made them free because things are more desirable when you can have them for free (this only applies to things that are essential for survival).
After some time, one person in the group will take the people’s orders. However, as soon as all the orders are taken, we will start to clear the table, indicating that it is time for them to leave. Therefore, although they will be able to see and smell ‘breakfast’, they won’t be able to consume it. This will then make it more desirable because they can’t get what they want.
To add another element, we will add the sound of sizzling food as the background. Therefore, we will be playing with 3 senses in total. As said, adding multiple sources will make the event more desirable.
After meeting with the group, we also decided that it would be best to place the air freshener under the table. This way, the participants and audience won’t be able to see it. We will set this up before class so when people enter, it is like a restaurant (when you walk into a restaurant, you can smell food).
Since we have a lot of setting up to do, we will meet in class at 8:30 instead of 9:00. This way, we have plenty of time to set up.
Overall, we had to change our ideas several times. It seems like an easy concept, but it was actually reallky hard to plan and lay out. It was also hard to stage it into the event. Although it is a complicated task, hopefully everything works out fine!

Assignment 2 700 word statement
Throughout history many designers/artists have explored the topic of constructed binaries and how art and design question them and bring new light to the meanings behind these “pairs”. In assignment one, I have decided to focus on man/woman, poor/rich, ugly/beautiful, and colors, showed the idea of “same right, same opportunities”. I really like about the concepts of my assignment, yes in this world, we need same right and equally everyone.
In this assignment two, I want to scope and focus only on Ugly/beautiful binary in mainly Korea and around the world.
In South Korea, as in much of the world, the beauty myth is still a reality for women. The pursuit of beauty is often an expectation, especially for those who seek social and professional success. The reason why I doing this binary of ugly/beautiful is , some job vacancies ads put the specific area that they want for example, applicants must be neat, beautiful ect. And also from point of applicants, some applicants are put their photos in resume to get a faster response from employees because they think they are beautiful. I think this kind of situation is unfair for some applicants. Yes, Of course, being good-looking or beautiful is great, but in relation to work, it should be their professionalism and skill that should be judged.
Physical appearance is too closely tied to protected categories, like sex and age that can generally be easily discerned from looking at a photo. In South Korea, though, photography studios catering to job applicants are common. Based on the response rate in the study, an attractive man needs to send an average of five resume with a photo to get one interview. An ordinary-looking man needs to send 11 résumés with a photo to get a single interview. For this reason, South Korean President is looking into getting rid of requirements for photos on résumés; they should have done those decades ago. Requiring that is probably one of the biggest drivers of plastic surgery and low self-esteem.
I asked couple of question to myself: why is this happening? how to change it ? In this case, I did some experiments . Another research i’ve concerned is about “Job CV resume “. i see most of people put their photos in CV. Why ? Does is require for the job?. Attaching photos to resumes instigates looks-ism and leads to burdening expenses for job applicants. Because of this, i want to use grime art photo and put on example Resume and want to know the employees responses. Will they look the appearance or skill? In my opinion, depending on their appearances, the opportunities should not be created. In the experiment, I used “Grime art” for plastic surgery ad. The reason i used about grime art is most people see this grime art first time, they said it gross or weird art. On the other hand, ‘Ugly’. For this ads, Korean government announced it would phase out plastic surgery ads in subway stations by 2020, Media reports cited public outcry, with over a thousand complains, and requests asking the stations to take down such advertising. I agree with this situation because every people have his or her own kind of beauty of inside and outside in this world, there is no need to be flawless beauty. So i made some ugly advertisement poster related to this. The question is “Will people still want to do the plastic surgery after what they saw this kind of advertisement?”
I always see the products ads, in ads, they always used beautiful person who is related with the product or not. I really do not want that kind of ads if possible, i can understand the business, the money, product , more into customers. but can entertain with another way like above examples.
Overall , none of us should judge what they have been through. My decision was a result of being exposed to Korean women who were smart, young, attractive, successful — but innately unhappy. All the people are important and treat must be treat equally.

Assignment 2 - Research / Process / Experiment
Another inspiration topic for me is “samsung anti-discrimination message” I really like their idea on advertisements and messages. Product advertisements are no need of beauty face, flawless skin or whatever. Here is some photos from research:
Above from posters ads, i did some experiment inspiration about my binary concept : I always see the products ads, in ads, they always used beautiful person which is related with the product or not. I really do not want that kind of ads if possible , i can understand the business , the money , product , more into customers. but can entertain with another way like above examples.

Above photo, ad is about hair dryer, for people like us, cannot see the dryer only see the actress’s beauty. Only beauty people need dryer? i asked out myself. so i made a little changed below.

Did some photoshop for actress face and i liked that is turn out !
Another research i’ve concerned is about “Job CV resume “. i see most of people put their photos in CV. Why ? Does is require for the job?. Attaching photos to resumes instigates looks-ism and leads to burdening expenses for job applicants.
Thats why , i want to use grime art photo and put on example Resume instead of good looking man and want to know the employees responses. Will they look the appearance or skill ?

Assignment 2 - Process / Experiments
So i decided to do about the binary pair which is ugly/beautiful concept. Here is first of the drawing on the face , i used with clip studio paint for drawings. I will use that drawing which is the combination of some other photoshop i made.
This is called “Grime art” the reason i used about grime art is most people see this grime art first time, they said it gross or weird art. On the other hand, ‘Ugly’.
As i research about Korean beauty, in Korean there are alot of plastic surgery advertisements in every subway stations.

As photo you can see, For this ads, Korean government announced it would phase out plastic surgery ads in subway stations by 2020, Media reports cited public outcry, with over a thousand complains, and requests asking the stations to take down such advertising. I agree with this situation because every people have their own kind of beauty of inside and outside in this world, there is no need to be flawless beauty. So i made some ugly advertisement poster related to this. the question is “Will people still want to do the plastic surgery after what they saw this kind of advertisement?”

Assignment 2 / Research / Experiment / Process

after mindmapping, i did more further research about my topic , the one i choose in assignment one which is one of the binary pairs ‘ugly/beautiful’. i want to do more about that binary pair in this assignment. These days, i heard there is one korean drama is popular. So i search in google and that drama is about beauty “my ID is gangnam beauty”. In that drama, main actress had timid personality ,due to her ugly appearance, she was tasted by people and even bullied when she attended school. One day she is beautiful after undergoing plastic surgery. After i watched some episodes of that drama, i did research about Korean beauty world and plastic surgery. In Korea, with the highest rate of cosmetic surgeries in the world nearly 1 million procedures a year. South Korea is often called the world’s plastic surgery capital. Some estimate that suggested that around one in three South Korean women between 19 and 29 have had plastic surgery.
Another research topic is about “Are good-looking people more employable?”

Assignment 1
Concept Statement
For this assignment, I’ve decided to focus on the question “ Contemporary art and design often looks at the idea of constructed binaries, such as man/woman, soft/hard, straight/gay, dirty/clean, organic/synthetic. Considering the history of these “pairs”, how can art and design interrogate these binaries and offers new insights?”
My poster aims to offer new insight and challenge these stereotypes. Day/light, black/white, soft/hard –these are all binaries that exist in the natural world. Many other binaries such as man/woman, poor/rich, straight/gay etc. are binaries constructed by humans based on patterns we see and create around us. For this poster, the pairs of binaries I’ve decided to focus on man/woman (Gender), poor/rich, beautiful/ugly, straight/gay. I want to show the idea of “SAME RIGHT, SAME OPPORTUNITIES” no matter what their race, religion or gender deserve equal rights and equal opportunities. Nowadays this is important for our society. Nature gave us our skin tones by genetics with beautiful variety. But we are of one earth all the same as one humanity. I was inspired this idea from my home country Myanmar. In my county people has a mixed narrative on gender equality and human rights. For example, in some opportunities, between rich and poor people, rich people get more opportunities then poor’s. And base on your gender, that opportunities can change.
Another reason is in my country, some job vacancies put the person’s look. Must be beautiful for this job etc. In this case, in my opinion, depending on their look, the opportunities should not be created. These are the messages from my poster to awareness the people. All the people are important and treat equally.
I created my poster background plain because i want simple and the focus would be the main idea. In poster, you can see not only in my country but also the whole world.
