Maiko and Jetara are relationships that make Zutara as a relationship even stronger. Even though these two relationships are toxic and I don’t like either of them, I like that they happened. I think these relationships played huge roles in both Zuko and Katara’s characters.
I know that Jet and Katara had a much less established relationship than Mai and Zuko but I think that there's still a lot of character development surrounding this couple. (Also there's more relationship development between Katara and Jet in the show than Katara and Aang. BAM there's your Kataang salt for this meta.)
Maiko and Jetara are different kinds of toxic relationships, Mai and Zuko both want the relationship but lack the communication to be a functional couple, Jet is a manipulator who uses Katara’s infatuation in him to further his own goals. Both of these relationships appeal to Zuko and Katara's want's at the time of entering the relationship.
Zuko wants to feel the same happiness he felt in his childhood, after returning from his banishment. Mai offers that in the form of a relationship with his childhood crush. This relationship cannot work because Mai and Zuko do not understand each other on a fundamental level. Zuko has grown and developed since leaving the fire nation, his views and opinions have changed, making it difficult for Mai to relate to him.
In Nightmares and Daydreams. Zuko looks to be uncomfortable being waited on by servants.
When he expresses his anxiety over an upcoming war meeting, Mai's suggestion to cheer him up is to order around servants for their entertainment, showing a lack of understanding of who Zuko is at this point in his life.
Tumblr media
This can also be seen in The Boiling Rock when Mai and Zuko have their final conversation before their conclusion at the end of the finale. When Mai tells him that by leaving he has betrayed his country Zuko explicitly states that they don't see things the same way. When Mai saves Zuko, it's out of caring for him not an understanding of his goals or ideas. This would have been a great place to end their relationship, instead of messily shoving them back together in the finale.
Mai has remained in the toxic environment of the Fire Nation, causing her to form a cold exterior and makes it difficult for Zuko to communicate with her. In episodes like The Beach, Zuko tries to show affection for Mai by bringing her gifts, including the shell and ice cream. Only for her to dismiss his attempts and leads to further disconnect between the two.
Tumblr media
After Zuko's attempts at performing acts of service for Mai are refused, he starts to act more aloof, matching Mai. At the party, Mai tells Zuko that she's hungry, he responds "so what". Zuko gives this response very defensively, likely from his genuine confusion on how to please Mai. Mai tells him he should get her food. He does so with no argument, despite his initial defensiveness when he didn't know what she wanted.
Tumblr media
Their disconnect climaxes in their argument at the party. Mai accuses Zuko of being "hotheaded" and "blowing up over every little thing". Zuko accuses Mai of "having no passion for anything". This argument demonstrates the communication barrier between the two. Zuko has grown more hotheaded because of the constant pressure he is under and the lack of genuine relationships, manifesting into aggression. Mai has no passion because she was raised in a restrictive household and progressively became more aloof as a defense mechanism.
Katara wants validation on her trauma regarding her mother's death, she is drawn to Jet because he open's up to her about his trauma with his own parents' death. What Katara wants is justified and knowing that Jet used her vulnerability to his advantage is enraging.
She also views Jet as heroic for his quest to free the innocent from the Fire Nation. Katara's desire to defeat the Fire Nation is inherently tied to the loss of her mother and the destruction of her home. Jet becomes more attractive to her because he tells her he's defending people who lack the resources to fight back. Even though Katara may not have realized it, she likely related to the people Jet said he was defending. The Southern Water Tribe also lacked the resources needed to fight back because the Fire Nation had immobilized them by capturing the water benders. Katara admires that they have similar goals and is immediately willing to do what he asks of her until she learns his true intentions.
Tumblr media
Jet's betrayal of Katara is so infuriating because not only did he lie, he also used the most vulnerable part of Katara as a way to destroy the town to kill everyone. Making Katara an unknowing accomplice to the murder of the people she wanted to save.
Jet and Zuko are explicitly paralleled in the show. They meet on the ferry going to Ba Sing Se after Zuko and Iroh have been named fugitives by Azula. Jet shares with Iroh and Zuko he 's done some things in his past that he's not proud of and that he's going to Ba Sing Se for a second chance, mirroring Zuko and his reasoning for going to Ba Sing Se. Iroh then acknowledges that both Zuko and Jet can have a second chance.
Tumblr media
There is also a lot of parallels between Zuko and Jet in terms of their relationship with Katara. Jet uses Katara's empathy to trick her into aiding him with flooding the town. This is paralleled with how Katara opens up to Zuko in The Crossroads of Destiny and later feels betrayed. You can see Katara has the same rage after seeing both of them after their betrayals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference between Jet and Zuko is that Zuko was genuine. Jet used Katara's empathy and that's why he acknowledges her loss. Zuko has no reason to validate Katara's emotions as he's already secured his spot as Aang's firebending master. He chooses to because he wants to rebuild the trust he destroyed with Katara. Zuko can recognize Katara's resentment stems from the pain of the Fire Nation killing her mother, just like Jet did. However, Zuko offers her a chance to actively face her trauma instead of telling her to suppress it.
When Aang and Sokka find out that Katara is planning to find her mother's killer Aang compares her to Jet. Katara refutes this by saying the Jet attacked the innocent.
Tumblr media
This claim Aang makes is incredibly invalidating, He knows how Jet manipulated Katara, using her vulnerability to destroy the village. Comparing that to Katara trying to get closure is illogical. It demonstrates how Zuko had a better understanding of Katara's needs than Aang or Sokka.
Zuko never told her what she should do. He told her he knew how to get information and asked if she wanted to act on that information. Facing her mother's killer gives Katara closure of some kind. She is finally able to forgive Zuko. Katara was able to be vulnerable with Zuko and he acknowledged her.
Katara and Mai are not explicitly paralleled the same way Zuko and Jet are but they still have very interesting connections in the way their relationships with Zuko work. Mai is an inadequate partner for Zuko because of the disconnect between the two. In the first scene these two share, Zuko tries to open up to Mai on his fears about returning to the fire nation and Mai responds with outright dismissal.
Katara is shown to be immediately empathetic towards Zuko. This can be seen in the catacombs scene, as soon as Zuko shows vulnerability Katara is willing to listen.
Tumblr media
Also when Zuko is worried about seeing his uncle after betraying him in Ba Sing Se, Katara takes initiative, asking him if he's okay even though he hasn't shared any explicit anxiety. She then listens to his worries and confirms to Zuko that he has earned forgiveness.
Tumblr media
So what did we learn today kids? Zuko and Katara's relationship is absolutely supported as growth from past relationships. It would have been a really good message that not every romantic risk you take is going to benefit you. You can also end relationships on good terms the way Jet and Katara did and how Zuko and Mai should have. Having these past relationships furthers the connection between Zuko and Katara through comparison. Can you do that with Kataang? Didn't think so.

Abused kids are often not aware of or have trouble regulating their own emotions but tend to, conversely, be hyper aware of and tapped into the emotions of others. This is a survival mechanism in people who grow up with an abusive parent, because any sudden changes in the mood of the parent could indicate danger. See the scenes of Zuko when he is with Ozai, particularly in “The Awakening” and in the flashback to the war meeting in “The Phoenix King,” when Zuko carefully measures his responses to his father’s praise, because even accepting praise is dangerous and could be a trap.
Tumblr media
Although Zuko is often oblivious in social interactions, he actually shows a pretty keen insight when it comes to mediating and understanding what the others need once he joins the gaang. He figures out that the loss of his firebending is connected to his change of coat, he helps Aang overcome his fear of fire at the same time he overcomes his own mental blocks with regard to his element, and he realizes that Sokka will go on a foolhardy mission to rescue his father no matter how much Zuko warns him that it’s dangerous, so he resolves to go with him. Particularly in “The Southern Raiders” he pretty astutely figures out that the source of Katara’s anger was her unresolved feelings about her mother’s murder, and knew how to help her. He also shows keen insight into what Katara needs. Aang, though he means well, responds to Katara with moralizing that just makes her angrier and more determined to go her own way. Zuko offers her the means and lets her lead the way, and defends her to Aang after Katara had made it clear she did not agree with Aang. Zuko, in fact, gets angry at Aang on Katara’s behalf, and interestingly, Katara, the person who regularly told off anyone who ever said a bad word to Aang and who, a few episodes ago, threatened to kill Zuko himself if he ever hurt Aang, says nothing in response to Zuko’s sarcastic words to Aang, only thanks Aang for understanding in a tone that implies that she doesn’t think Aang understands at all.
Zuko also seems to be aware of the tension between Katara and Aang at the end of the episode, as he purposefully leaves Katara on Ember Island and goes to speak to Aang himself about what happened when they confronted Yon Rha. This implies not only that Zuko knew Katara needed space to process her feelings, but that he knew that Aang and Katara would need time away from each other after the angry way they parted, and it also implies that Zuko wanted to explain Katara’s perspective to Aang, fearing that Aang would misunderstand. Aang actually misunderstands anyway, wrongly assuming that Katara had forgiven Yon Rha, and Katara angrily tells him that she will never forgive her mother’s murderer, but does forgive Zuko.
Zuko tells Aang that he was right about Katara, although that is contradicted by what Katara just said and the events of the episode. I know some people theorize that this was a result of a lack of unity in the writing, but I also don’t think it’s out of character for Zuko to say this, even though he also ultimately disagrees with Aang’s stance on violence. Zuko is again playing a mediator role and playing both sides a bit, because the episode positions him between Aang and Katara, but he also leaves Aang with a challenge to his moral absolutism.
So I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that in the very next episode, Zuko was also picking up on some tension between Aang and Katara when he sat between them. I’m not sure he knows about Aang’s romantic feelings for Katara - although he would when he hears his actor on stage call Katara “the Avatar’s girl” and sees Aang nod. But he does seem to pick up on Aang’s irritation being about more than just a taken seat, as he responds with unprompted anger. Zuko also takes note of Aang’s increasing anger throughout the play, with a concerned expression on his face.
Remember what I said about abused kids being hypersensitive to the changing moods of others? It might be that, or Zuko might be feeling anxious about his role in the play and feeling like he doesn’t deserve forgiveness, or it might be that Zuko is hyper aware of the conflict between Katara and Aang carried over from the last episode to this one.
Tumblr media
Actually, this shot is particularly interesting because the rest of the gaang is laughing at the portrayal of Toph, including Katara, until Toph shows that she’s pleased by the play’s portrayal of her. Then we see Katara frown, her attention shifting to Aang.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katara is unhappy that her attempt to get even with Toph backfired, then when she notices Aang as the camera pans to her left, she looks even more unhappy. Then we see the shot above of Zuko looking at Aang with clear concern over the situation. I’m pretty sure that Zuko is aware that something is going on between Katara and Aang at this point. Especially since Aang’s anger at being played by a girl (which is made worse by Toph’s happiness at being played by a boy) is linked to his insecurity about his relationship with Katara, and the play keeps making jokes about it, meant for us to feel sorry for Aang for being put in the “little brother” zone.
I think Zuko was generally anxious going into the play. You can see when they walk in that he has his hood pulled up, to hide his face, because he’s aware there’s a chance someone will recognize him. So even before the play starts, with its incriminating and humiliating portrayal of him, he is probably already on alert and wants to draw as little attention to himself as possible. Aang’s outburst is the kind of thing that would draw attention, and Zuko tries to minimize the attention by insisting that Aang just sit next to him. Zuko also reacts with defensive anger, as he is wont to do when he is anxious or upset, which of course would have the opposite effect from drawing attention away from them. But Aang acquiesces in frustration, and Katara, interestingly, notices the dispute, but just like when Zuko defended her to Aang in “The Southern Raiders,” says nothing. Katara also is facing away, fidgety, and looks unhappy while the confrontation is going on. This is also consistent with (and probably contributed to) the way Katara reacts to Aang’s pushiness and accusations later on.
Tumblr media
Zuko spends much of the back part of season three physically close to Katara, which is a visual way for the animators to show how close they have grown. It’s not necessarily an indication of romantic Zutara, although there is nothing wrong with interpreting it that way, and I find it hilarious how threatened some people are by shippers gushing over the idea that he wanted to sit next to her, particularly in this episode because this episode actually intentionally plays up the “love triangle” for the purposes of getting the audience to sympathize with Aang and root for him to “get the girl.” Regardless of whether we interpret it in a romantic context, I think it is a good indication of how Zuko feels about Katara once he has gotten her forgiveness. Given Zuko’s social ineptitude, it would make sense that he would be likely to want to stick close to the people he felt closest to, especially in situations where he is surrounded by potentially hostile strangers. Witness his behavior in “The Beach,” where he spent most of the time awkwardly glued to Mai’s side and it was when he was separated from Mai at the party that he ran into trouble with the other partygoers, who make fun of him. That might explain why Zuko, although he comes from the opposite direction when they enter the theater as everyone else does, walks all the way down the end of the aisle to sit next to Katara.
It might also explain why he wants to sit in between Katara and Aang, as these are the two people who he now feels closest to. It also is very likely that he is subconsciously picking up on the tension between Katara and Aang, which comes to a head later in this very episode. It’s worth noting that Zuko is often positioned physically between Katara and Aang throughout this episode, which is meant to communicate to the audience Aang’s anxiety over Katara not returning his feelings (and Zuko plays an indirect part in that, or at least, his stage actor does).
Tumblr media
Zuko is also positioned narratively between Aang and Katara as a mediator and comfort to Katara after her fight with Aang in the very next episode, “The Phoenix King,” in which Zuko tells Katara to let Aang figure things out for himself when he runs away after yelling at Katara.
Tumblr media
So no, I don’t think the deliberate positioning of Zuko in between Aang and Katara is a coincidence, nor is it “lol Zuko is clueless!” I’m actually very tired of seeing people talk about how clueless Zuko is, especially since a lot of his reactions come from trauma. Even if Zuko didn’t pick up on Aang’s romantic feelings towards Katara he very obviously picks up on and reacts to and interacts with the dynamic between them. And it’s very telling that certain fans will complain about the “infantilization” of Zuko when it’s traits that make him seem sympathetic, but then talk about a traumatized abuse survivor as if they’re completely incompetent.

I will not apologize in the slightest when this scene plays…but this has been on my mind since they announced the kickstarter!!! My soul is forfeit to this relationship.
I will not apologize for how absolutely unhinged I will become when we see “Darling, take the mask off” animated.

The Gift of Her Name
Chapter one - The Soulmate-Sized Hole
Adrien tried to ignore the empty seat across the dining table. The food was there. The high-backed chair was pulled out, waiting for its occupant. But his father was a no-show once again. He’d promised to spend an entire 30 minutes with his son this morning, but now there were only a few minutes left before his tutor arrived for his daily homeschool lessons, and the chance had been lost.
At least he knew there was one person who would never let him down, never abandon him, always have his back: his soulmate. Determined not to look around the hollow room and its broken promises, Adrien scrolled through his phone, rereading his list of nearby Soulmate Savants. Only 537 days until his 18th birthday, and then he wouldn’t need Father’s permission to hire one. Only 537 days until he gave himself the gift of her name.
And then he would be able to find her.
He missed his soulmate terribly, and he hadn’t even met her yet.
The cool click of shoes on marble was Adrien’s cue to hide his phone; his father swept into the room seconds later, looking concerned.
Gabriel didn’t stop next to his seat, but instead walked toward his son with carefully measured steps, his hands behind his back.
“What’s wrong?” Adrien asked, because of course something was.
Gabriel adjusted his glasses, like he was stalling to find the right words. It was unusual for him, which made Adrien nervous.
“Your stalker was just here. Nathalie spoke to her.”
Adrien leapt to his feet, ready to… he wasn’t sure. Years of battle instincts told him he needed to do something, but that girl was just a teenager like him. He couldn’t fight her, might not be able to stop her from hurting someone, and that wasn’t something he was used to. He slumped back down into his chair, suddenly tired. “What did she say this time?”

Carnival Ride of Horror // Steve Harrington x Reader
Carnival of Horror // SH
Warning/s: Cursing, laughing at inappropriate times, (very minimal) mentions/implications of abuse/stalking (just wanna warn, its super small but just in case!)
Word Count: 3.5k
Hey guys! It’s been a bit since I’ve written, lemme tell you, life has been kinda crappy and its just a little less crappy now! So I decided to start pecking at the keyboard again and this is what came of it! This lovely person requsted this work and I just got around to starting to really write because I had a free week. Anywhoodles, it’s good to write something again and I hope yall enjoy it!
Again thank you for this idea @seraphiiii
omg i came across your post about writing ideas in my feed and got so excited to see both steve harrington and young justice in the tags lmao. but i think a steve harrington x reader where reader and him go to an amusement park and reader is terrified of the rides so he’s like comforting her throughout them and encouraging her but also laughing (in a good natured way obvi) about how scared she is and stuff? i think that would be so cute!!
Here’s my Masterlist.
Enjoy.
-----
“Stevie, when we agreed to have a date night away from the kids, I didn't think we would be going into a mass of more kids.” As he pulled the keys out, you stared at the bright light shining machinery that had been set in the middle of a field outside the city. The annual summer fair had finally made its way to Hawkins, and it had left a buzz in the air as everyone planned when they would go, talked about what rides had come this year, who their ride buddy would be; it had been all the kids had been talking about for weeks. They put a day together the coming weekend to go as a group and they planned to drag Steve and you along on the off chance that they needed an “adult” to allow them on the rides.
Funny how they assumed either Steve or you knew how to adult.
“Cause I thought it would be a nice change from us just watching movies or having dinner.”
“Oh, so dino nuggets are no longer date-worthy for you.” Steve almost took you seriously, but he saw the grin that has graced your lips at your own comment. He relaxed a little knowing that you weren’t upset with his idea for date night, but he had always wanted to kiss someone at the top of a Ferris Wheel, and he would do anything to get you to the top of the rotating ride.
“So, you’re not mad that I chose here for tonight?” You shook your head and pulled at the door handle separating the two of you from the outside life.
“Of course not Stevie, I just thought it was an interesting choice.” The smile you chose to have was one that hopefully convinced him that you were okay with where the pair of you were going, even if you weren’t happy with the choice.
You can be happy with the idea of going to a carnival as long as you don’t go on-”Cool, so what ride do you want to do first?”
“Shit.” The world slipped out before you could stop yourself as Steve finished paying for your tickets and asked what you had said. “Nothing just kicked myself. Um…” You looked around frantically for something to do that wasn’t flashing brightly and spinning faster than the legal highway speed. “Let’s go over there!”
Steve followed your hand as he saw you point towards the stands of games that were rigged and way too fricking expensive, but he would do it for you. “Alright, starting out with some games I see, I like it.”
The two of you ran through a few of the games, most of them where Steve got way too into it and you had to step between them as he tried screaming that he deserved that stuffed bear/pony/cat/fish, because he almost had it every single time. He did beat out the basketball one, one of the last ones the two of you did on that strip, bolstering his confidence just enough to get him into a cheery enough mood.
“Alright! We played some games, and let the crazies test out the rides so I’m pretty sure they won’t break down on us. Which one should we do first? They got a drop tower, or how about the pit viper swings? Or, or, or how about we…” The night had been going enjoyable up until Steve turned to the rides you had managed to distract him from and pointed at the glowing and fast-moving monsters.
“How about we do the haunted walk over there?” Steve followed your pointing finger with a quizzical look, he hadn’t really taken note of the scary attraction before, never thought to really look to it with everything else going on. “I bet it won’t even be scary to us after everything we’ve been through right ha.”
You took off with a dry laugh without waiting for a response from him; his cries were head behind you, but the haunted house looked better than anything else around you. “Y/N.” He called you again, but you walked faster. By the time you got to the stairs leading into the building, you were practically running up them to get into the dark house with smoke billowing out of it.
“Y/N!” Your name was the last thing you heard before diving through the door and physically bumping into one of the scarers dressed as a zombie. He seemed nice, breaking character enough to ask if you were okay before you had already turned the corner and left him behind too.
Twisting and turning, you didn’t pay much mind to the screaming witches, zombies, skeletons, or anything that happened all around you; over the music and screaming, you could vaguely hear your name, giving you an indication that Steve followed you.
Not too far in, you found a quieter corner with only a couple cobwebs around it where you quickly ducked back into and tried pressing yourself into it deeper, hoping to watch Steve walk right by you.
Why the hell were you running from your boyfriend? You gained a sense of logic for a second where you paused. Why were you running? This was super childish of you and really had no reason. All Steve wanted to do was go on a few rides and you were being selfish and completely ruining what was going to be one of the few evenings you didn’t have to babysit the kids.
As the guilt started to swirl with your desire to not be found, you didn’t notice as the Frankenstein in the room had taken notice of you hiding in the corner and started to tromp over to you. “Hey, miss, you can’t be hiding in here, you gotta keep moving.”
“I’ll be out in a second, sir, let me just-” “You can’t be here-” “If you give me a second, I will leave as soon as I can-” “Miss you have to leave-” “Give me one dan minute-” “Y/N!”
Among all the screaming the Frankenstein and you had been doing was your name being called by a third and new voice along with a hand clasping onto your shoulder. Looking to the hand, you saw the unmistakable outline of the man you were hiding from. “There you are babe, why were you running off.” Just looking at the Frankenstein’s demeanor, you could tell he went into defense mode suddenly.
“Were you hiding from him miss? Are you okay? Do you feel safe?” The painted man moved to step between you and Steve in an attempt to separate you two.
“Whoa, whoa buddy, back off. She’s my girlfriend, chill out.” Steve tried stepping around the man o little success.
“Oh, your girlfriend? And she’s running from you? I don’t think this is looking very good for you, buddy.” The two were shooting back and forth at each other, getting chest to chest, and starting to cause a larger disturbance that started o be heard over the music and background scream noises. More workers it looked like started to slip into the room and try to get the two men to quiet down, going so far as to begin threats of throwing them out of the haunted house.
You were pulled away from the situation before being pushed away and into the next room, looking like it was on its way to the exit in the next two or three rooms: your destination.
-----
“Y/N?” His voice finally chirped up next to you as Steve took a seat next to you on the grass at the edge of the carnival. “You okay?” When he saw you sitting over here, he had quickly jogged over and took her in as he did so: sitting with her face pressed into her knees and arms wrapped tightly around her legs as she kept herself in as tight of a ball as possible.
You didn’t respond at first, only moving your head to look up at your boyfriend, the person you have embarrassed tonight and most definitely pissed off with your childish antics tonight. “I’m sorry.”
“Whoa what do you have to apologize for? I’ve been worried about you and wanted to make sure that you are okay.” His hand found its way to your back and began rubbing circles into your shoulder blade.
“I was really childish today and you didn’t deserve it, all because I was scared of the stupid rides.” Your words may have been mumbles, but he heard every word clearly.
“Hold on. Babe, did you say you were scared of the rides?” Your small and timid nod was enough for him to understand. “Why didn’t you tell me? I never would have brought you here if I knew that!”
Swallowing the thick feeling in your throat, you looked up at him and saw the disappointment and hurt in his face and that hurt. “Because you were so excited about it, I thought I could get through it and do at least one or two with you. But as we got closer, I guess my nerves got the best of me and I just...ran. Like a stupid child.”
“Hey, hey, hey, no.” Steve quickly shuffled to kneel in front of you and grabbed your hands, holding them in his own and your legs fell down to where you were now criss cross apple sauce. “I’m not gonna force you to do any of these rides if you don’t wanna. If you want to just go home, we can make this a movie night if that works better for you.”
“No, Stevie,” His mouth quirked up at this name. “You already bought the tickets; I don’t want you to waste the money you earned because I’m a scaredy cat.”
Steve took a second to think, racking his brain on how to salvage what has been an eventful evening. “How about…” He paused again and just stared at you with you staring back at him, waiting to hear what he wanted to say. “You can say no, how about we try a few rides, to try and get you on some. If you don’t like riding after one, we can go home, and you can at least say you did it.”
Mulling this idea over in your head, your eyes shifted from where your boyfriend sat in front of you to the bright and joyous scream filled rides were. “I suppose they don’t all look so bad.” You murmured to him, staring particularly at the giant Ferris Wheel that turned, a small memory from early on in your relationship popping into your head. Steve had mentioned a few times that his dream date would be to take a girl up on a Ferris Wheel and cuddle her and kiss her when they got to the top.
“Okay, we can try a few.” Though shaky, your voice was a little stronger this time and you gave Steve a small smile.
“You sure?” A nod. “Okay, I’ll let you choose which one we go on, okay?” Another nod.
Together, the two of you stood to your feet and approached the hustle and bustle of the carnival grounds again. “What did that Frankenstein do to you? I hope he didn’t get you in trouble or anything.” You asked as you laced your hand with Steve while the other went to hold onto his arm, squeezing it slightly as you got closer to the machines and your stomach growing heavy again.
“Oh him, he didn’t do much, just tried scaring me when he though I was some creep chasing you.” He chuckled at the short story, glancing over to you as you took in the carnival for really the first time, looking for something that didn’t freak you out. “How about we start with those spinning pods over there? All they do is spin around and if you want it to, we can make it spin on the inside too.”
Following his finger, you saw what he was referring to as it did spin around, the four small egg things with windows in them were spinning on the main machinery but also appeared to be spinning on their own. As you got closer and apparently joined the line, you could see inside one of them a group of middle school boys cackling as they pulled on the weird center disk that kinda looked like a pizza pan. “Yeah, we can give it a try.” The shakiness in your voice had come back and your grip on Steve tightened.
“Hey, you got this I’ll be right here with ya.” He returned the squeeze to your hand and fishes through his pocket for two tickets to hand over at the entrance. “Up ya go.” He mutters as he helps you up the three stairs leading into the egg ride thing you were entering before he stepped in behind you and took his place next to you. You were already holding a death grip on the center console when the door was shut, and Steve sat next to you. “You know what this is?” He asked gesturing to the disk you were holding onto with the vice grip.
“Something for me to hold onto?” You shocked yourself with how violently your voice was shaking as you heard something start to rumble around you. “Oh, shit its moving.” Steve let a quick chuckle out before he stopped himself and tried explaining the center console would cause the pod thing to spin. “Fuck no! Don’t you dare make this thing spin.” Bloody murder was not even near definitive enough of how much you were screaming.
“Babe, babe calm down, it’s fine! I promise, ha!” In comparison to your screaming, Steve seemed to be having the time of his life as he laughed; at least he wasn’t making the ride spin. “Babe, babe, babe, I’m so sorry I’m laughing, I promise I didn’t mean to, but you were screaming so much! And it was hilarious!” Steve held onto his sides as he nearly fell out of the pod and waited for you to follow his laughing self. When you didn’t step out, he turned back around and saw you still had your hands clenched very tightly to the metal plate, your eyes wide and your lips pursed together. “Sweetheart, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad about the rides, do you wanna go home?”
Hearing him soften up got you to finally look at him and slowly let go of the wheel. “N-n-no. I’m…” You paused to catch your breath and steady your voice. “I’m good, I just don’t know if I can do any more of these kinds of things.” Taking his hand, you pulled yourself up and stepped out from the ride and have yourself a few seconds to remember how to use your legs.
“You okay?” You nodded at him and gave a shaky, but okay smile. “You sure you wanna do another one? Cause we can go-”
“No, no, I can do…” The carnival really did have more rides than just ones that wanted to make you die, but none that really made you want to jump on them. “Can we do the carousel? I know I can do that one at least, my mom took me on them enough as a kid to be desensitized to those ones.” Steve looked over and saw the carousel that was filled predominately by smaller children, but if you wanted to do this and it was because he bought the tickets, he couldn’t make her do something else.
“If that’s what you wanna do, then we can do the carousel all night long, babe.” You nodded at him and followed him as he took your hand and the two began the walk to the carousel.
The carousel ride was much less curse filled, thankfully. You and Steve had found a pair of horses sitting side by side and the two of you quickly claimed them. Like you had said, you did get to enjoy this ride due to having done it before and you were able to just chat between the two of you, talking about how the kids were cute, how excited you were to take the kids to the park and not have to rides. It was a fine ride, definitely better than the last one.
“You ready to go home, babe?” Steve turned to you with a smile on his face. Getting you to ride two of the rides was honestly enough for him, plus, he knew Dustin would ride all of them with him later, with you waiting at the end for him.
You were about to agree and leave this eventful evening behind you, but you saw what Steve was standing near and bit your lip. Should you do it? Could you do it? “Actually, I wanna do one more.” He gave a quick quirk of his head before he followed your eyeline and turned around.
“What? Babe, we don’t have to do that, you have been through enough today and you were great, you don’t have to prove anything.”
“But...you have been wanting to do it, you told me about it one time.” You responded a little shyly as you confessed that you were doing it back of what he told you that one time. “I just...I really want you to be able to do it.”
“You...you remembered?” Steve was kind of shocked that you remembered him mentioning it, he had told that to girls in the past, but none of them really went out of their way to think about it, hell, even to remember it. “Are you su-”
“Steve, yes, I wanna do it with you.” The grin on his face was immaculate and contagious as one grew on your face as he quickly took this well and pulled you towards the line to the Ferris Wheel and dug around in his pockets for another round of tickets.
As it went around, you felt your stomach grow heavy again when you finally saw how high it got and had to calm yourself down without causing another scene. “Come on, babe, looks like ours is up.” He gently tugged on your hand and pulled you into the seat next to him before the handlebar was lowered and locked in front of you. “And here we go!”
The squeak that left your mouth was nothing but surprise and terror as you clung onto the bar for your life, your knuckles turning white with the sheer force you were holding on. “It’s really stupid you know that the only thing holding us back from falling to our death is this small bar and it’s really stupid because was if I was reall-holy shit this is really tall!” You finally removed your hands from the bar and moved to press yourself in Steve.
You could feel him trying to stop himself from giggling as he moved his arm to wrap it around you. “You can laugh you know; I really don’t care. I’m the coward of an almost twenty-year-old who’s scared of a carnival.” A chuckle did come through as the ride kept rotating and you slowly moved closer to the bottom.
“I’m not laughing at you, babe, but the noises you are making are fricking hilarious.” His voice still held the chuckle as he pressed a kiss to the side of your head, and you responded with another squeak of shock as you started rising again.
Making it to the top again, you were waiting for it to hit its peak and for the relief of lowering the cart to begin, but instead there was a shudder before the ride stopped. “What’s going on, what’s going on, why are we stopped? Oh god we are about to die, fuck, shit, I don’t wanna die.”
“Babe, calm down, someone below us is getting off so they had to stop the ride for a bit. Remember when we had to get on? Same thing probably happened to someone else.” You nodded your head and just stared ahead to the tops of the trees you never thought you would have seen.
“It’s...it’s not too bad up here.” You finally mutter after a few beats of silence and getting your bearings. “I wouldn’t want to stay up here, but it does look nice.” Steve hummed in agreement and pulled you a little closer. “Hey Stevie?”
“Hmm?” He responded looking down at you.
“Thanks, tonight was fun.”
His face broke out into a grin again at your thanks. “Of course, thanks for giving a few of these rides a chance.” Smiling up at him, you sat a little straighter and caught his lips with your own, the two of you humming to the other that you were happy with your evening.
Though it was not as long as Steve would have wanted to stay in that moment with you (the ride started again and you broke away with another shriek), but he wouldn’t have traded that moment for anything else in his life.

omg i came across your post about writing ideas in my feed and got so excited to see both steve harrington and young justice in the tags lmao. but i think a steve harrington x reader where reader and him go to an amusement park and reader is terrified of the rides so he’s like comforting her throughout them and encouraging her but also laughing (in a good natured way obvi) about how scared she is and stuff? i think that would be so cute!!
Heck yeah I can do that for you! I just posted it publically so feel free to read happily my dears!

Hello! Just wondering what your rules are and what characters you’ll write for Young Justice, please
I have written for pretty much the majority of the young justice male super heroes, nothing against the females I just find it easier to write for the male based ones. And rules wise, honestly all I ask is nothing sexual based (smut, lemons, limes etc.) and this is a personal preference, but I really only do male character x female reader. It’s what I am comfy with and know what to write!!

It’s been a while
Hi guys, I don’t do these types of things cause it’s just not my thing, but since this is my secret and happy little side of the world that no one I know knows about, I wanted to share this with people and y’all are my best idea and option. I’m going home for Thanksgiving and I get to surprise my boyfriend at home, and I am so excited, but I am nervous just cause I haven’t seen him since July and am so excited to see him that I’m running myself nervous. On top of that, his phone is glitching out on him so I don’t know when I will be able to talk to him in the upcoming weeks and I just...I am pretty independent without him, I don’t need constant attention from him, but the possibility of not being able to talk to him for up to two weeks just makes me anxious and nervous. It just messes up the routine we have set up of when to text and call and all of this makes me a little upset to think about not being able to talk to him until I get home later this month.
I’m just writing this to get this out of my head, but also to say it to someone rather than say it to myself and let it stew within myself. I will try to get something up soon, but if anyone has any requests for me to write, I will gladly take them!

I think part of what makes the McElroys so lovable for millennials and gen z is that they’re a REAL underdog success story. All the ones about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs starting Apple and Microsoft from sheds and Jeff Bezos starting Amazon from a shed are wrong. They all came from well-off backgrounds with upper-class privilege coming out their goddamn ears, but the brothers didn’t.
They really were just three ordinary boys from West Virginia, and if you listen to Griffin’s Florida State lecture (the whole thing’s on youtube) he talks about how rough things were for them when they started their podcast. He mentions how they were in mourning over their mother, fighting all the time, and ready to separate forever, but held on and decided not to abandon each other in the thick of it. And things were still rough, because their father had to work stupid hours at the radio station to support himself, and the brothers were trying to make it in game journalism.
And then they started MBMBaM, a goofy bad advice podcast full of improvised bits and comedy segments, and it blew up. They started TAZ, a fun D&D podcast where they played with their dad, and were able to bond together and let him retire comfortably on the revenue it generated, and now Clint oversees the TAZ graphic novel series that’s still releasing issues and spends boatloads of quality time with his three sons. Monster Factory is just a funny game stream where Justin and Griffin try to destroy character creators as much as possible, but it’s one of their biggest IPs. Their TV show was short-lived but explosively popular among their fanbase.
They sell out entire stadiums and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays them We Didn’t Start the Fire parodies as they walk on and people lose their collective minds. Tom Holland fanboys over them at SDCC. People come from all over the place to hear them perform, and that performance never got less authentic. It’s just three brothers and their dad being goofy together and trying to make each other laugh. And the laughter and love they carried for each other was so contagious that it made an entire world of people love them, too.
Maybe they’re a bit weird, and their jokes don’t always land, but they’re not always supposed to, because it really is just a tight-knit family living in the moment. And in this world where our two generations may be close to each other but horribly disadvantaged socio-economically, the idea that these three boys carved out a way for themselves through the sheer force of their own happiness out of such a dark place is more hopeful than any “millennials are killing the mayo industry” article ever written.

Listen
There is such a thing as being afraid of being heard, but have you ever thought about the fear of never being heard?
I am afraid to talk not because I have a stutter, but because I think that no one wants to listen to me talk.
I’m afraid that when I start a story that they are annoyed at my talking, so I speed up and trail off.
I’m afraid to say anything because I don’t know if anyone will pay attention when I speak.
So I just don’t.
It doesn’t feel like people talking over me all the time.
No.
It’s my mom not looking at my fun little drawing I spent hours on and just wanted to hear her tell me that I did such a good job.
It’s starting a story someone asked to hear and then watching their eyes turn dull at hearing me actually start telling the story
It’s wanting really badly to say something and there is an opening and I start talking, but someone else starts talking and deems their point more valid by talking louder and my words get lost and no one noticed that I was talking
It’s knowing that my friends love me and want me around, but there’s still those days where I question whether my input is needed, whether they would be different people without me
It’s hating to text people because I feel like they don’t want to talk to me. Everyone is busy, but that only goes so far.
Because of this fear of not being heard, when I am, I don’t know what to say, so I shut up and make an excuse.
It’s crying alone in my room because I don’t know how to explain why I feel the way I do.
It’s being completely silent on days that are the worst because what else would I do but be quiet? No one notices anyway.
It’s feeling betrayed when people share a secret you trust them with when you feel heard and not knowing how to look at them ever again.
It’s overthinking everything you say because you want to say the truth but are afraid of people hearing the truth you have to share.
Being afraid of not being heard is not me being shy and an introvert.
It’s me being trained over the last twenty one years of my life that my words are not worth being heard.
It’s being trained in knowing my place is listening, but never being listened to.
And how do I train my voice in knowing that it is worth speaking?
How do I train myself to speak a little louder when I know what it is like being spoken over.
I am afraid of not being heard and I finally said something.

Hi I just wanted to say I absolutely loved Tears of the heart, it was brilliant!! Are you thinking of doing a part 2? 💕💕
Ummm, I honestly have not. If I did it would be shorter I think than the first part 😂 but I’m glad you liked it so much!!!! If you got a good starter idea for a second part I can take a swing at it!
