There was nothing that you didn’t absolutely love about him.

Everything he did; from the way he laughed to the way he cried–it was all more than beautiful to you. There seemed to be endless meaning behind everything he did, and you couldn’t help the curiosity that stemmed from it. You wanted to know more - you wanted to feel more.

Understandably, it was difficult to keep your infatuation a secret from him, especially when the two of you were constantly around each other. You got to see all of his little quirks and habits firsthand. Who wouldn’t have trouble with maintaining their calmness? It was nearly impossible for most, and you were definitely not an exception to that.

There was something about him that made you constantly want more. Even though you refused to admit it, you were drawn to him the way bears are to honey, and the way trees are to the sun. He was addictive, and it felt like he was a song that you just couldn’t get out of your head, no matter what you did. The little things he would do for the sake of seeing your precious smile; it made you swoon every single time.

But there was no way that he could know that.

Why should he? It’s none of his business, anyway. No matter how nurturing he is, how charming and charismatic; there was simply no way that he would feel the same way about you if he knew about how much you loved him. Confessing to him simply wasn’t worth the risk. You had to be content with how things were.

So, you had no choice but to adore him silently. From afar, or from up close; you would watch the way that his heart was broken by others, and you quietly hoped that one day he’d notice that you were always there to repair it. Wishing that he would finally realize that you were the right one for him, but alas, there seemed to be no progress from either side. He continued shining brightly as always, and you stood in his shadow, admiring him and building him back up each time someone attempted to bring him down.

As hard as it was, someday you would have to accept the fact that it isn’t ever going to happen. You didn’t like it, but you knew that you were destined and damned to an eternity of spectatorship. You would never be the one that he danced with, the one he woke up next to every morning, the one that he would kiss and kill for. There was no denying it; he would forever only see you as a friend, or worse; a therapist. You were the  first one he came to when someone hurt him, when someone did him wrong, or when the terrors of life were just too much for him. That natural light he’d always had; whenever it faded, he came to you and made you fix it.

It wasn’t entirely his fault, though.

His entire life he was ridiculed and made fun of. Told that he would amount to nothing but a lowlife or a villain, or that he wasn’t worthy of true love. This meant that when he saw that you cared for him like no one else did, he was intimidated. He didn’t know how to react. It was hard for him to understand that there was more to life than black and white. There’s more to life than good or bad. Even though he was always the one who was casting off the natural glow, he was one of the only people who couldn’t see it.

He wanted to be a hero. He wanted to be the one people looked up to and adored, but he had set his standards so low that he expected to be played with, and he couldn’t respond appropriately when you tried to bring him up from that dark place.

The only way he could accept your love was by taking advantage of it.
