Design & Explore

My group and I visited Rittenhouse Square on a Friday morning for a quaint breakfast experience. It was my first time using SEPTA to travel so it was cool to finally experience that. On our way to the cafe we agreed on, we saw some cool uses of iconography as logos. They are simple but eye catching. (As you can see I like bird motifs). We also saw interesting uses of color in some flags advertising some car event and murals. We ate at the Gold Standard Cafe. Food was good and came quick. Compliments to the good service we received! We ate and just talked about life and I think I needed that even if I wasn’t much of a speaker. Overall I was quite happy to do this.Â

Some of The Best Album Covers of 2019 in no particular order
So, 2019 was a year of highs and lows, both in my life and also the design world. I’m here to reflect upon some of the best of the best designed album covers of the year.Â

Anima by Thom Yorke
I love the simplicity of this album cover. The large bold text of the title and artist’s name in bright orange really contrasts the smudgy background art of an upside down mountain and what seems to be a man falling. The smudgy mountain somewhat creates leading lines leading the eye to the title. It’s eye catching.Â

When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? by Billie Eilish
This album cover really screams the edgy teen aesthetic that Eilish seems to go for in everything she does. It’s creepy and even now I can feel her soulless eyes watching me. I have literally bought this album cover on a t-shirt. The album cover is a photograph of Eilish sitting dead center on the bed. The dramatic vignetting on it draws your focus to her and that’s when you notice said soulless eyes. Love it.Â

New Hell by Greet Death
The chaos, the busyness, it really fits an album titled New Hell. The fact that it is so busy keeps your eyes moving around and around in literal visual hell, and I think that’s perfect. That’s on theme. It’s also in perfect contrast to the title and artist’s name, which seem to be in this simple Times New Roman-esque font.

House of Sugar by Alex G
House of Sugar’s album cover has such a cute illustration quality to it that I just adore. It’s sparkly. It’s colorful. It’s got this sickeningly sweet cursive font for the title that is presented by a figure skating woman. The way she is posed draws the eyes to the title. It’s cute.Â

Death Race For Love by Juice WRLD
As someone who grew up with a Playstation, this is a really well executed concept for an album cover. This looks exactly like PS1 era racing game covers a.l.a Gran Turismo and Need For Speed. It’s chaotic and action-packed in the way it literally uses the diagonal line of action for the composition of the cars and Juice WRLD’s hand. It’s really well done.

There Is No Other by Rhiannon Giddens
I like the composition of the text on the photo. The first thing that draws your eyes is the artist’s name. Then, the bridge acts as leading lines to lead you to the title of the album. After that, there’s that branch to lead you to the extra bit on the left. Overall a good use of composition. Not to mention the photo is just spooky and cool.Â

Orange by Caroline Shaw / Attaca Quartet
This right here is a perfect example of product photography. A simple white background, and absolutely nothing to distract from the product, the delicious-looking orange right in the middle. The font of the text is also kept simple, as to allow the viewer to focus on the single orange.

The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change by Nina Nesbitt
The way the photo is composed has Nesbitt’s face right on one of the rule of thirds lines. That causes her to be the focus. Then the way she’s posed draws the eyes to the flowers in the water surrounding her. It’s well done and well shot. Also the colors are soft and pretty.Â

Wooh Dang by Daniel Norgren
The background is a simple black with a white moon and white dots to represent stars. This heavily contrasts and allows the viewer to focus on the main event, the most colorful rooster I have ever seen. Honestly it’s quite ridiculous looking but extremely fun.Â

Sequestered Sympathy by Exulansis
The most of the cover is extremely simple but there is a cut out in the shape of a raven to a beautifully illustrated scene of a river in the valley of mountains at sunset. It’s so good to look at.

Redcap’s Corner
A love of mine over the past few years has been tabletop gaming. I love board games, card games, and other nerdy hobbies like that, but the one I love the most and haven’t really got to check out all too much is Dungeons and Dragons! Can’t find a DM to run a game for me even if it would save my life! In comes Redcap’s Corner! Every Wednesday they host a D&D game for free! Definitely (probably) will check it out!
