so i was Thinking and like while starfires innocence and naiveness can fit her alien origins in a diegetic sense, the idea of her childlike curiosity can also play into a fetishized version of innocent femininity and Pure Girl archetypes esp with her broken english which while watsonianlly can be taken as her still learning english, it can doylistically be taken as a furtherance into her innocence and give way into a cultural parallel of exotic accents/mistakes being perceived as Charming or Sexually-intriguing which in turn reinforces the idea of Desirable Otherness

and what about the episode “stand and deliver,” specifically where the librarian, or the Dandy Highway man states and i quote, “it wasn’t until i started to moderate the book club that i learned how to listen. from there, i actually became interested in what women had to say” and when the sheriff doesn’t believe that listening to what women had to say actually did it, the dandy highway man pulls out earplugs, and he (the sheriff) says “i knew it! i knew there was some kind of trick involved. listening to women? whoever heard of such a thing” and how he immediately dismisses the actual idea of listening and paying attention to women, and how this idea is furthered during the last few minutes of the episode in which daphne asks freddy if he’s actually listening to her, and he pulls out earplugs and says, “listening like a man.”
this again, not only perpetuates the idea that women are not worth listening to or even worth acknowledgment, but teaching these “serious themes” (e.g. misogyny, which the show does not take seriously at all) to children, especially in the way it is contextualized doylistically, does not improve upon anything or teach them valuable Moral Teachings. instead it sets us back a few years by going against everything feminism strives to do (e.g. women being Listened to, Acknowledged, and take Seriously, all of which is run down by every man in this episode)
moreover, velma being obsessed over shaggy too much throughout season one did not “come off” as sexist because it Was Sexist. the idea that her character revolves entirely around a man is sexist in of itself, especially because liking someone does not equate to your entire life and thoughts evolving around Them!
so, in conclusion: you not only fail to recognize the misogynistic themes in this show, which are doylistically portrayed as Normal and Good, but you also fail to acknowledge how harmful this can be, especially to a younger generation. so no, this is not the “quality entertainment” you speak of!

To the people who think Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated is utter trash due to a few sexist/unfortunate moments that angered their feminist sensibilities: The show gave us fantastic female characters, such as Marcie Fleach, Angel Dynamite, Mayor Nettles, Angie Dinkley, Alice May, the Hex Girls, and many of the female perps our heroes faced whilst solving Crystal Cove’s mysteries.
They contributed to the plot, as well as individual mysteries. Angel Dynamite helped the kids countless times; even sacrificed her life to ensure their survival. Marcie became an invaluable ally to them and played a key role in Fred’s master plan. Mayor Nettles put the welfare of her citizens over profit, making her a better mayor than Fred Jones Sr.
I admit it, the love triangle between Velma, Shaggy and Scooby was handled… poorly. The writers wasted their time on a Romantic Plot Tumor, when they could have fleshed-out Scooby and Velma’s friendship some more instead. Worse still, Velma obsessed over Shaggy too much throughout a good chunk of S1, which came off as sexist to some fans. Also, something about the Bechdel Test (admittedly, they could have done a tad better in this category).
All that said, Velma improved as a character after she broke up with Shaggy. Then Marcie came into the picture and everyone rejoiced when those two got together. Honestly, despite Velma’s flaws, MI relied on the brunette because of her intellect. Velma’s pattern recognition in “The Man in the Mirror” comes to mind for me. c:
In conclusion, SD:MI has excellent female characters, an engaging overarching-plot, fun minor-characters that also got character development (e.g. Sheriff Stone), fantastic villains, an interesting Fred, and it appeals to many people!
Kids and grown-ups alike enjoyed this cartoon. Why, you may ask? The writers didn’t shy away from exploring serious themes! Unlike Teen Titans Go!’s creators, they don’t think kids are brain-dead morons. No, the people who brought us SD:MI believe kids deserve quality entertainment, too!

Where is the panel from on your post about Batman being best friends with a twelve year old boy? I’ve been into comics for a long time now and have never seen this so now I’m curious.
Hi! To be completely honest, I'm not exactly sure where the comic panel comes from as I found it on twitter and thought it was worth sharing, however, I did do some research and believe it was from Mazzucchelli’s short strip at the back of new copies of Batman: Year One.

Narrator: It makes perfect sense that his best friend would be twelve years old, because batman is still a little boy stuck in a man's body
