32。11th Nov 1918 - World War I
Notre-Dame de Paris. There was celebrating the end of the World War I in Nov 1918.
A hundred year ago.
I have read a lot related to this age in the textbook before. The history always sounds so far away from us when it is written in the textbook. However, a hundred year, it did not sound too far for me when I thought about it.
The first thing came to my mind was the fact that there was not my country's flag -- Taiwan, hung up there, even though the government who was truly a part of victors to end the war (Republic of China, ROC) not current China (People's Republic of China, PRC).
It is confused I know, but if you can distinguish South Korea (Republic of Korea, ROK) from North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, PRK), then you should be able to distinguish the difference between Taiwan and China.
Before our current government, we belonged to Japan during the World War II. Then Japan wrote down the "Japanese Instrument of Surrender" and "Treaty of Taipei" to claim that "Japan renounced all right, title, and claim concerning the island of Taiwan, the Pescadores, the Spratly Islands, and the Paracel Islands."
RENOUNCE.
They never claim that Taiwan belong to China from now on. Then our current government (ROC) came and we have had our democracy and election for more than half of hundred year. WE NEVER BELONG TO people's republic of China (POC, current China). After you understand all the history, how can China ever claim we belong to them? We have very different government.
The most difference is that as a Taiwanese I have freedom and human right.
We have our own government. We have our own president and our own election. We don't pay China' government tax, not at all. We need to pay tariff when we export goods to China. We need visa to go to China. We are indeed a foreigner when we are travelling in China.
And every other countries' government in the world know that, but most of them decided to deny us because of the economical influence of China. They decided to approve China's lie to the world, to their people and make Taiwanese continue suffering.
Not like U.S., not like India, etc, we are not fighting our independence because we ARE already an independent country and we NEVER belong to China.

31。Musicians don't retire; they stop when there's no more music in them.
I really like the movie - The Intern. The movie told me that I will retire from my job one day but my life. To be fair, as a scientist, I can continue doing my research and asking questions till the last day in my life, however, the phrase touches me.
I am in a foreign country to study my PhD. I don't quite remember how much time I feel confused and don't know what to do although it seems everything working well.
I wasn't like this before, I was...so sure, so ambitious, and so excited to my path. However, it is just suddenly gone somehow.
Musicians don't retire; they stop when there's no more music in them.
I know there is still a music in me, but I wonder what it is?

30。On the path to the future
This is the photo of my main campus - University of Nottingham.
I took this when I just arrived UK about a week last year. I have been wanting to study abroad since I was a kid. However, when I am finally here as a PhD student, sometimes I still ask myself that where is the future?
Future is always unknown no matter who you are, where are you from.
There was an article said "What do you practice in your life?" How much effort we put it in decide who we will become. But the most difficult question is that who and what you want to become?

30。The marvellous beauty
This is my first Cathedral in my life.
Lincoln Cathedral. It took more than a hundred year to build (1185-1311). I don't belong to this religion, however, I am always amazed by this art made by people who believe in this. The purity of them when they truly believe in something are the most beautiful thing in the world.

29。Natural land and resident.
Orchid island is one of the isolated island of Taiwan. Because of the isolation, the aboriginal tribe in this island have preserved their own traditional culture.
Here is the utterly different place with differently peaceful atmosphere. In Chinese mythology, we call a place where is isolated, likes Utopia, and resident here has been remaining living with traditional culture as “蓬萊仙島(Mount Penglai)”.
The first time I stepped on the island, I completely believed, here, Orchid island, was the place which our mythology had mentioned.

28。If you see someone without a smile, give them one.
So the bus gave me and the people on the bus a lot of smile.
There is a saying that “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” Even though we have nothing to do for others’ battle, at least we can share a smile to someone who has no smile.
Have a good day! : )

27。What’s snow for?
The day after the snow which was the heaviest one in two decades in Victoria.
Last time was in 1996, everyone told me that. Although this time was better than the one in 1996; however, buses stuck on the street, and no one could distinguish the roads and sidewalks.
Nevertheless, it was so nice, peace and quiet; sunny and bright; amazing and fantastic on the next day. It seemed nothing have ever happened the day before.
While I was taking some pictures and wandering, I wanted to ask these snows around me that “Hey! What’s you purpose to come here?”
She didn’t reply me.
Snow is a silent and mysterious woman, she showed up and disappeared without any concern. She knows what she want but we would never know it.

26。City is a galaxy.
Here can see the whole night view of Victoria.
Sometimes I think the place who we live is indeed a galaxy. The downtown where is the most crowded is the centre of the galaxy. Maybe there is a supermassive black hole so that people usually go there. And lights decrease as going outside region that is also corresponding with the description of a galaxy’s pattern.
These small spots of light are shining in countless warm families. Each of them has their own stories just like each fascinating star exists in the universe.

25。What were you built for?
A lot of boats were floating here. I kept watching them while I had been sitting here for a while. I was wondering that why they were here. For what or for not?
They stood closely and tightly with each other and with loneliness.

23。Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken
Feeling homesick. The chef in my working restaurant made the flavour of Taiwan for all colleagues. It’s so tasty, wonderful, and authentic, is the flavour of my hometown.
Thank for the people I meet in Victoria. Everything is so grateful because of the existence of you guys.

22。Munro’s Books
I am trying reading some novels of Canadian writers recently. Because I am in Canada, I really want to know anything about here. One of them in my list is the novel of Alice Munro - Dear Life. Her husband, yes, he is that Munro of this bookstore.
This warm and elegant bookstore has been being here for over 50 years since 1963. “Words are life.” said by Max Vandenburg in The Book Thief is the best description of a bookstore, I think. Especially for the bookstore which is opened by writers. Everyday we put millions of words on the shelves and the works, renew them, clean them, and talk to them. And trying to find the meaning of the words, just like we intend to find the meaning of the life.

17。You are a novel.
Today I met a grandpa on the bus. He comes from Hunan (湖南) in China and is already 88 years old. Slow but merciful.
He can not speak and listen clearly, that is the imprints leaved by time. In addition, he lacks in one finger of his right hand. According to his age and hometown, I can’t help to imagine the story behind this grandpa and the history hiding behind the generation.
However, I didn’t ask anything. Just leaving a kind of novel for this stranger, for a stranger.
