Woman and puppy redux

Workflow is improving but I still haven’t mastered hair.

Continuing on my journey through this style is a girl with glasses. I find hair really difficult, so I guess that’s where I’m focussing now.

Boy with spiked hair

I’ve moved over to a more cartoonish style, which I honestly found much more enjoyable to do. I think I’ll stick with this style for a bit.

Woman & Puppy

The Covid19 pandemic has made everyone stay at home, so what better time to get a puppy! Here is a woman with a newly adopted puppy. Speed sketch in Procreate using mostly charcoal brushes.

Another sketch. I’m not really too happy with how this came out, I just couldn’t get the detail right. Overall I’m thinking of moving towards anime for a bit.

Covid19 is a milestone in our history. It has stretched our resources, caused pain and suffering and completely altered every aspect of our lives around the globe. It has shown humanity at its best and at its worse. This is a quick homage to the healthcare workers that are trying to hold back the tide.

I decided to take a break from realism to try a different style. Here is a painting of a woman in a scrub cap (won at a hospital Christmas party). I was trying for a more cartoony GTA type thing.

As I work in healthcare my family and I have gone into voluntary isolation. We only go out for essentials and to work, which means that workouts now occur at home. Home isolation does mean we can all work on our skills and hobbies, so I’m obviously working on my painting. I am getting more familiar now with procreate and think it’s time to start thinking about freehand sketching.

Man and Woman in Pool

I was feeling quite down so decided to do a quick painting of happier times. Done in kind of a GTA style.

Daddy’s Lil Monster

Next up to draw is Harley Quinn as played by Margot Robbie. I love this character and found this a lot of fun. My first time drawing abs and skin, which wasn’t too bad, but that pink hair was a challenge!

Overall i’m happy with how this came out.

Woman in Nightclub

This is where I am currently. I found a tutorial on Procreate Portrait drawing that included using the colour picker and the blending options. This is where I discovered that I need to go back to basics, follow tutorials, learn about shape and tone and anatomy. It’s going to be a fun ride. This image is a little surreal to me, so I’ll go over it in time to try and adjust some things and fix others.

Sunset

I found a YouTube tutorial that demonstrated how to paint this scene. It was refreshing to get an idea how to use the program properly as well as how to mix colours. This was where I saw someone use blending properly, a concept I had never ever understood. To date I had done absolutely none, but this tutorial was where I started taking things seriously.

Overall pretty happy with how it looks. I’ve used it as my desktop wallpaper.

The Witcher

I chose Geralt of Rivia as the subject for my first Procreate “painting” because he’s cool. No other reason really. Learned a lot from this, mostly that it was time to start looking at tutorials to learn how to actually draw and paint. To date I had been drawing over images (or tracing as my wife calls it), and I really wanted to learn how to do this properly.

Boy with Cat

The next subject was a boy with his cat. I thought after the last sketch it was time to push myself a bit. This was Procreate on the iPad Pro, and I found it difficult to get all the tonal variation right. I was meandering through this process of learning to draw without any real instruction, so after this I decided to try using colour as a way to be able to draw out the details.

Woman and Baby

My next subject was this woman holding a baby. After the last drawing I went back to familiar territory in Adobe Sketchbook (that’s what I’d used all along on the note 10). I was much happier with how this turned out. The shading was significantly more straightforward and I was satisfied with how the piece progressed. This was again done on the iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. It was also the last time I used Sketchbook.
