The first edition of Corvus Rex: The Substance of Darkness has been unpublished on Amazon, but I'm pleased to announce that Second Edition will soon be available in Kindle, trade paperback, and hardback. The cover of the book will remain the same and in glossy (the original was a matte cover), but only the name J.H. Kimbrell will be attached to it from now on and this should clear up any prior confusion over the pseudonym being changed. The new edition has been re-edited and has a larger font that is easier to read. If I have time between now and publication (yet to be determined), I may also drop some ink illustrations into a few chapters. This is a new element I'm considering adding to all continuing Corvus Rex books. Any edition with J.K. Ishaya on it is first edition with a matte cover and will only be found through a third party or used. I still have some unused copies in my stock and am willing to sign and sell them at 5.00 each plus shipping and handling of $4.00 ($9.00 total). In a bit of honoring the end of Supernatural, I decided to share this. This alternative dream casting for Kvasir was actually the original, and this photo of Jensen Ackles is the one I worked from when I created this character study. You can see the resemblance, although in capturing the features of Kvasir’s race, I resized the eyes (they are larger as well as “cat eyes”), and of course the ears and per Kvasir, the facial scars. I did not totally change my mind from Jensen Ackles to Chris Hemsworth and back. Both are fantastic actors who convey huge ranges of emotion, and either would bring this character to life beautifully. Got off to a good start on NaNoWriMo and then choked a bit because of schedule conflicts. Oh well, they happen. Besides the second book in the Corvus Rex series, I have an interlude novella, too, and that seems to want some attention, especially since they will probably be released very close together and then there is work on Arcadia to be done. Dream casting #3 is for Kvasir, or Mr. Eric Freysson, his alias in the modern world of 1908. I flipped a bit on this character, and honestly Chris Hemsworth was not even on my radar, but then I considered Kvasir’s personality. He’s charismatic, chatty with a “sunny disposition” when he’s comfortable around people he knows and loved ones. While Hemsworth is a good actor, I have to admit, I saw the most range in the highs, lows, dips and evolution of his Thor character. I didn’t always like some of those twists and turns, but still enjoyed the overall performance. On top of it, in real time, the man has the friendliness of a giant golden retriever. That said, I began to consider him for Kvasir, who is generally jovial, but can flip into warrior mode in seconds as needed. On the other end of this, Kvasir’s elf-like species has to psychically camouflage themselves to look human when walking the streets of our world, an effort that is growing tougher as our populations grow, leaving them gradually more mentally taxed while still maintaining vigilance in their eternal war against Nyarlathotep. So I did it. I stayed up until midnight and kicked off this year's NaNoWriMo, reaching just over 2200 words, which at least got me past the 1600 goal for the first day. It felt slow, but I think that's because opening the sequel to any first book requires some careful rehashing as well as new set up for the story to come, introducing characters in a new situation. In Corvus Rex: The Raven King in Yellow, Yuri is ready to tell the next important stage of his history to young Howard Lovecraft. Once these early establishing scenes are out of the way, I feel like this is going to run pretty smoothly. Cover is a concept mock up only, not the final. A portrait of H.P. Lovecraft I did as I was developing the idea for Corvus Rex. It took me a while to decide at what age to place him as a fictionalized character in the book. After combing through several biographies, I chose the period of his life between seventeen and eighteen which dictated the year as being 1908. A friend encouraged this bit of fun. Who would be my ideal cast? Well, I have one of them anyway. This guy. John Wells not only fit so well to the visual of lead character Yuri that developed in my mind the deeper I got into my research, his talent brought the character to life in the book trailer, and I would be crazy pleased to have him cast, and work with him again, in a movie or TV series.
