Sometimes I get really angry at my CPTSD brain stuff for shit like seeing a pork loin and getting triggered. The event it reminds me of, on paper, wasn’t even that big of a deal. But it was an accumulation of things and the pork loin now represents it like a meaty icon for a really bad period of my life. It’s annoying. It feels silly. I feel like I can’t talk about it. I swallow it down and demand that my brain act normally when I see one in the grocery store. I do my best to ignore the images it brings up, and the panic attack, and the grief, and the rage. It’s so stupid. I’m so stupid.

But that’s not how any of this works. I don’t control it or fix it with my anger. I have to look at the fucking pork loin, let my brain freak out, and then do the work to not let it ruin my day. Because CPTSD and PTSD are complicated, often annoying, maybe not completely fixable in some cases, and usually requires more effort than it should. But like… Being mean to your brain about it doesn’t actually help, and can make the reaction that much worse. The work can be costly on your energy levels, but the grounding techniques coupled with just not being an asshole to yourself do help.

Be the kind person that you needed then, because it can help you now more than ever.

The funniest "fellas is it gay" moment I ever got hit with was my girlfriend's extended family suspecting that I was gay because I was too affectionate towards her. We're all the way down to "fellas is it gay to love a woman". We've gotta stop man it's getting ridiculous.
