"I lived as a woman online for over a year, as part of an experiment and research for a book.

You are treated very differently. No ideas I suggested were ever taken seriously and I got the impression they were ignored. I got called "emotional" and "hysterical" a few times which has never happened to me as a bloke.

I got banned from loads of groups even for trivial offences, even though I was trying very hard not to be contentious. The rules applied to women were a lot harsher.

The biggest problem I found in dealing with other women was that they assumed I could multi-task, so were often puzzled that it seemed to take an age for me to switch around the 20 or so screens they had opened.

I was surprised how little actual conversation differed, for example I didn't have to learn about shoes or make up, women actually talk very similarly to blokes, you just have to find your own circles.

I think women are much more supportive towards each other than blokes. If I said I wasn't feeling well I got loads of messages.

It is almost impossible to avoid sex. Even though I was a 40+ female, I had loads of offers, plus several internet boyfriends. (Not at the same time, what kind of girl do you think I am!?)

"A mix of annoying and relaxing. I only pretend to be male when I play video games. When I identify myself as female (either by saying I am or giving my name) or use a female character or use a microphone, people treat me differently. And by differently, I mean generally like I’m an idiot or a child that needs to have my hand held through a game. I’m a higher level and I’ve been playing longer than you Brad, you don’t have to tell me how to open my inventory.

And once when I started a new game, the first thing this guy did once he found out I was a girl (because he straight up asked) was LIE. I had gotten to level 10 without dying and had gotten the title for that. He said that we should practice dueling, because it didn’t actually hurt your character and was a good way to get experience. He was like 10 levels higher so I declined, but he said that it capped him out so we were the same level. It sounded weird, but I had no reason to assume that he would lie.

But it was all a lie. No, it didn’t cap him out. Yes, my character did get hurt. And I died and lost my streak because of it. And it wasn’t like either of us got experience or items. He just killed me…When I asked what that was about he told me to stop playing the game, because it wasn’t for girls and I was clearly too stupid/not good enough to play.

In MMOs, men invite female characters to basically do your quests for you, while you just tag along. Which is stupid, I want to play the game not just follow someone else as they play it.

None of this happens when I play as a guy. No one tries to offer help when I haven’t asked or haven’t demonstrated a need for it. No one has told me how to do things that were in the tutorial that even new players would know how to do even when I have leveled past them. No one has told me that I shouldn’t be playing or that I am not as good a player just because I’m a guy. No one has tried to flirt with me or ask for my private information (from my age, to relationship status, to phone number). No one has asked for pictures or offered to send pictures.

When I play as a guy, I can play in peace. Which is why it is relaxing. But it is also frustrating because I shouldn’t have to pretend to be a male player to be treated with respect when I am just as good a player when I play as a female character/with microphone."

I was a Wikipedia editor and administrator for quite a while and explicitly asked people to use gender-neutral pronouns for me, but most users assumed I was male. I felt like I was respected and listened to a lot more than I would have been had I presented as female, a lot more than I have been in other online interactions.

Here is a link to the study on the left that states that (roughly) almost 1 million adults nationally (I’m assuming as of 2016, when the latest data was retrieved). The right screenshot is the 2025 2.1 million adults today. So in 9 years, (granted the first study is an estimate, & likely an under estimate given how the data wasn’t well documented) that is an insane growth. Like at LEAST double.

& I assume we can all agree that in that time frame, there has been exponential damage done to not only women’s rights, but to the “aim” of the trans movement. It went from, “clothes have no gender” & “you need dysphoria to be transgender because it’s a medical condition” (for lack of a better word) all the way to now, where “you don’t need gender dysphoria to be transgender” & “you like stereotypically feminine or masculine presentation so you’re probably trans!! Speaking of the “need dysphoria to be trans” becoming “you don’t need dysphoria to be trans & if you say you do you’re a transmed/truescum”. This was one of the moments before I became disillusioned & uncomfortable with trans ideology, where I genuinely felt something was off. I wouldn’t properly become gender critical until years later, I mainly didn’t discuss the way I thought you needed dysphoria to be trans as it was met with similar dogma I get today abt being gender critical. Oh & a radfem. A “terf”.

It’s so funny because looking back, I was a member of the transmed subreddit & it seemed actually very familiar to how I feel today, all the discourse.
