Helluva Boss' Racism is Hollow & Nonsensical - Helluva Boss Critique
Tumblr media
Racism is a sensitive and mature topic, to talk about not only in the media we consume but in general real life, with many news outlets covering it, the effects it has on everyone, and the many reporting of racism in the world.
Now those of you are wondering, 'why am I talking about this?' Well this relates to today's topic in which I'll be discussing Helluva Boss' portrayal of racism, and my problems with it. 'Why am I talking about this?' some of you are thinking. Well due to the recent episode of 'Full Moon' on Season 2 Ep 8, specifically these lines said by Blitz to Stolas, towards the end of the episode: "Treat me like one of your butler Imps. You can just dismiss me like that! I mean you royal fucks think you can do this every time! Like you can just play with our feelings because we're smaller and not as important!"
While this line is incredibly well delivered by the voice acting, it falls flat on it's face through the writing from the previous episodes and the world building as well, it doesn't hit as hard as intended from the writers.
It Started Off so Good (Season 1):
Surprisingly, the world building wasn't all that bad, it was pretty decent (but not perfect, as I'll explain later) at the start of the series, with Imps and Hellhound racism.
This is shown with how Stolas treats Imps, by him looking down on them through his demeaning comments to Blitz calling him; little bitty imp, my impish little plaything; and even calling other imps racist comments, 'littler ones' referring to Moxxie and Millie, 'tiny wrath ring imps' to the Imps in the Harvest Moon Festival.
Aside from making racist comments, Stolas does other things, such as pinching Blitz' cheek, using his horn as an ashtray, ignoring Blitz comments on how he says his name and finally but most importantly of all, coercing Blitz into having sex with him in exchange for having the book, to keep his job.
They even show that Hellhounds are considered bottom of the barrel, with Millie's rude comments towards Luna, referring to her as a 'Hellhound' rather than saying her name, or referring to her as Blitz daughter to her parents.
However, as the series goes on there are examples of the racism in Helluva Boss being incredibly inconsistent throughout the show.
It Slowly goes Downhill:
Surprisingly, the problems start off in Season 1, where many of the Sinners that hire IMP, aren't even racist towards them, while hiring them. They just talk to them as a customer instead of the Sinners looking down at them condescendingly, making racist remarks about them, being shocked that imps are starting a business, or even opposing to the idea of imps starting a business; whether they hate the idea of imps rising up to power by starting a business since it goes against the societal norms of Hell or they feel like the business of IMP is flawed. The idea of sinners being stuck with the same person that got them killed is something that should be called out in universe, but it isn't. Another good point I forgot to mention, is that no one is even put off by Blitz, hiring and adopting Loona. A Hellhound as his daughter, giving her a job and Blitz treating him incredibly well. None of the sinners/clients, none of the Goetias (Octavia & Stolas), and not even Moxxie, Millie (who was quite racist to Loona) and the other Imps in Hell find that weird and unusual. This would establish to the audience that Imps and Hellhounds are the lowest class of hell, by how they're treated by much higher classes in Hell. The problem is that the writers use sinners who have died moments ago that ended up in Hell, such as Mrs Mayberry, Loopty Doopty & the Camp Counsellor. Instead of using Sinners who have been in Hell for years, and have been exposed to how Hell works, being racist towards IMP, Loona as a entitled customer, Blitz has to bear being mistreated and get used to it for the sake of his company and those around him.
A Snowball of Problems starts:
Before we go onto Season 2, there are massive problems. We need to address the elephant in the room in Season 1, more specifically in Episode 8 of Queen Bee, where Beelzebub the embodiment of Greed is dating, Tex, a Hellhound. Now the reason as to why this is bad, is because that no one in the show even bats an eye to it, Loona doesn't, the other Party goers don't, this doesn't have consequences of Tex talking about his relationship to Bee, such as rumours spreading from those outside the party within Hell and effecting the lives of Tex & Bee. But some of the defences may say, "Beelzebub is the sin of Greed and she's overindulging in her sin, by dating a Hellhound." If she was to overindulge in her sin, she would be eating copious amounts of food and drink, not dating Tex, someone who is a part of the lowest class of Society. She would represent her sin Greed, instead of being stupid and breaking class rules, that would possibly get her into some really serious trouble.
The weirdest part is that in the previous episode 7 called 'The Finale', where Fizz & Ozzie call out Stolas for dating a lower class Imp. Ozzie telling him, "he sold his life for a thrust" as well as Stolas worryingly glancing around at the guests in Ozzie's, worrying what will happen now that people know that he's been sleeping with an Imp.
(Side tangent: But how does Ozzie & Fizz know that Stolas has been sleeping with Blitz, just because they were seen at a club, that doesn't mean they were sleeping with each other, yeah they were at a club for lust, but .)
This problem spirals out of control, in Season 2 Episode 3, where Moxxie's Dad, Crimson, is introduced as a Mafia Boss in the Greed Ring, working with Loan Sharks.
Many people have pointed out their grievances with this idea, the reason is because that it's been established by Striker back in Season 1 in the Harvest Moon Festival, where Striker learns that Blitz, an imp, is leading his own business:
Striker: "Boss huh? *Meets Blitzo for the first time* Oh! So you're the bold imp that started his own killing bizz!" Blitz: "Yeah well when you're good at something, you should capitalise!" Striker: "Not many imps start their businesses on their own, that's impressive sir! *winks at Blitz*" Blitz: "Oh? Yeah, it is, I guess, I guess it is, isn't it!"
This scene gives exposition to the audience that imps running their own business is rare and uncommon in the realms of this Hell, to the point where it's considered 'impressive' by another imp, for his own species to lead his own business.
So Crimson, an imp, is able to run a mafia with ease, undermines the idea of imps and hellhounds being the lowest class in Hell, as he is a Mafia Boss and being able to lead a gang of sharks with ease without any problems. Since none of the Sharks goons express any racism towards Crimson, cause he is their boss or other imps, like Blitz, Millie & Moxxie.
The fact that Millie and Blitz are not shocked about Crimson, an imp, leading a Mafia or even mentioning it once during 'Exes and Oohs' is really weird, they don't talk about how he came into power or wonder how an imp was able to lead on a gang of Sharks into obeying him without any troubles. Even more unusual, is that Moxxie doesn't even talk to them on how Crimson became a Mafia Boss. Honestly, I'm surprised that Striker, didn't make a comment on Crimson being a Mafia Boss when he and Crimson met for the first time.
Speaking of Striker, let's go onto Season 2 Episode 4, 'Western Energy.'
The Snowball of Problems Gets Bigger:
This problem grows bigger in this episode, where Stella, a Goetia, who is supposed to be racist towards imps, right next to other royalties and blue bloods, is willing to pay a imp to have her husband be assassinated. It gets even worse that she's willing to pay him extra just to have him tortured. It's even worse when you take Blitzo's line from Full Moon: "I mean you royal fucks think you can do this every time! Like you can just play with our feelings because we're smaller and not as important!"
This line doesn't hit as hard as it should due to imp racism not being showcased throughout the show, the most we get it from was Stolas talking down against Blitzo. Cause the imps get treated well throughout the show, they can have jobs, they can get their own homes and are even IMP are paid by Sinners. They're even allowed to build their own families, if an imp couple would like to do so, as shown with Millie's parents. It's even worse with Hellhounds, when you consider that Vortex is allowed to date Bee, the Sin of Gluttony, or without any kind repercussions from Satan nor Asmodeus dating Fizz (since that information is now public, from FIZZ & MAMMON episode).
In Conclusion:
The racism in Helluva Boss, is hollow, due to the discrimination towards imps, not being shown in the show at all, from the Ars Goetia, to the Seven Deadly Sins, to even the Sinners who have lived longer within Hell.

Fucking what!? How the hell is Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4 childish? Is it because they introduced Doey, well, he's a really tragic character that's made up of three children.
I would call Chapter 4, one of the darkest and depressing Chapters of the whole game.
The fact that there are so many people dismissing it so easily, even though it's really good makes me extremely upset.
The fact that some people call it a downgrade, mid, meh or anything negative, makes me genuinely angry. Because I LOOOVE this Chapter, I love how dark and depressing it is.
I love the fact that the Player has to kill Doey out of self defense due to both the Prototype & Harley Sawyer's actions, I love how the Chapter ends on a downer note, I love Doey's unstable personality, I love how grimy and disgusting the bowels of Playtime CO factory are.
I love the fact that we get actual on screen corpses of Playtime CO employees. Doey's death made me almost cry, as we the Player are the only ones who can grieve and take in his death, I love Doey's Reminder Tape about him choosing to stay to help the Safe Haven toys rather than leave.
I love this Chapter so much, and no one else can convince me otherwise. Not a Youtuber, like CheeseYeen, moonyowl, or any other YouTubers out there.

Just a random question but what might happen if Doey wasn’t careful and grab the human being with his hands?
Tumblr media
Doey's learned how to control his strength, since he escaped the Prison, during the Hour of Joy. He's had his fair share of having to fight humans off to escape, after all, which he somewhat regrets. Nowadays, it'd take a lot or something super serious to push him to do harm, intentional or not. When he fails to register how much force to apply on someone, there is the off chance that it'll leave more than just a bit of bruising.
So, in summary, humans and toys are fragile beings to him. If he ever did harm to those he cares for, such as Safe Haven and the Player, he'd carry that guilt like a heavy burden forever.

I saw the animation, really good and horrifying, sent chills down my spine. And it almost made me feel bad about Stolas, and then I remember how he's written in the show, and I wish I could've the same feelings of sympathy I have to this Stolas, as I could've have in the actual show. Also have you seen some Instagram Reel, comments, people sense of humour there are really fucked up. I would not recommend going there.
I get disliking Stolas but being happy watching anyone commit suicide whether you like them or not is kind of fucked up. So like.. I guess you can dislike him but maybe take a step back and consider your investment and mental state if you’re happy watching anything kill themself.

Instead of carrying out Poppy's plans, if Reader stood up to the prototype alone and died with the prototype to save Doey and the other dolls of safe haven, what would be Doey, Poppy, and Kissy's reaction?
Reader firmly promised to leave the factory with the prototype before stepping forward, but the promise was ultimately broken.
If you feel bad about this, you can ignore it completely.
I would never ignore a chance to write something angsty!
If you like my work, please consider commissioning me or leaving a tip on Ko-fi (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
Player who died with the prototype
Tumblr media
Doey
★You lied to him. He trusted you, trusted that you could save them all from the Prototype. That you and all his friends could be free. But after everything you've been through, you finally ran out of luck. The player left and didn't come back.
★ Holding one of the Player’s belongings they left behind. A scarf, glove or earring. Something insignificant then but precious now. He has an internal argument about what happened to you. "Why did they lie? Why did they leave? I could’ve stopped them. We should’ve stopped them."
★ He remembers their smile, their determination to help, the way they trusted him to keep everyone safe. And how, in the end, he couldn’t save them. They promised. They promised they’d come back. But they didn’t.
★ Doey clings to your promise, even though he knows it is broken. They will all leave the factory someday, but you won't be there to see it. Now that the Prototype is gone, they're free. He just wishes you could've been free with him.
Poppy
★ Poppys first reaction is anger. She’s furious that the Player didn’t listen to her, that they chose to go alone despite her having a plan. "You should have followed my plan. Why didn’t you listen?!" She mutters to herself as she paces around the Safe Haven.
★ Even though she is angry at you, she can't deny the sense of relief that floods her porcelain body. The Prototype, her biggest threat, is gone. Though that relief quickly feels like a knife twisting in her chest. Because it came at the cost of your life.
★ As time moves on, she tries to rationalize what happened. “They knew what they were doing.” Poppy thinks. “The Prototype was too dangerous to let live, it had to end like this.” But even then, a small voice in the back of her head tells her otherwise.
Kissy
★ At first, she's numb. Standing still and not knowing how to feel. The reality of it doesn’t sink in until much later, when she’s back in Safe Haven with the others. Surrounded by toys alive because of the Player’s decision. It hits her all at once.
★ She breaks down away from the others, in a quiet corner of the Safe Haven. Back against a wall as she covers her eyes with a hand and begins to cry. Sobs barely audible but still loud enough to gain the attention of poppy. Who comforts kissy to the best of her ability.
★ Though she knows it was the Player’s choice, she can't help but feel responsible. Replaying the moments leading up to the players decision in her head. Wondering if she could have done anything to stop you. Every time, she reaches the same conclusion, she couldn't.

What if the player had a mental breakdown in front of doey kissing dogday (maybe) and poppy? About the explosives maybe and they refused to do it?
I have very complicated feelings about Poppy, I think this reflects that.
If you like my work, please consider commissioning me or leaving a tip on Ko-fi (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
Poppy, Dogday and Doey when the Player has a breakdown over the explosives
Tumblr media
Poppy
★ It’s a heavy moral dilemma. Is it kinder to let them all rest, or to fight for a chance at survival, despite the potential suffering? The pressure of deciding such a thing is too much, hands trembling as you hold the explosive.
★ You like the toys in Safe Haven. Despite everything they've been subjected to, they are all still children. Tortured souls who deserve better than this. Observing you closely, Poppy notices the hesitation in your eyes.
★ "It'll be quick" she explains. Her voice is without emotion. You feel your heartbeat quicken, everything about this seems so wrong. Before she can say anything else the Player puts down the explosive. Stepping away to take a breath as the room begins to close in on you.
Dogday
★ He handles the situation surprisingly well. Approaching you slowly to try and avoid scaring you and sitting a safe distance away. Talking softly to calm the Player down and figure out what happened. “Hey,” he says softly, his voice steady but gentle.
★ As you start to cry, a sense of dread fills you. He lowers himself to the Players eye level, careful to avoid overwhelming them further. His protective nature taking over. Dogday doesn’t push the Player to stop crying or pretend everything is fine.
★ His eyes scan the area, searching for any potential threats. Some unwanted attention could be bad. As you pull yourself together, he keeps watch for you. Ready to act if anyone, or anything, tries to take advantage of the state you're in.
★ After making sure the Player is stable, Dogday approaches Poppy. His gaze locking onto her. “What were you thinking?” He asks, voice low but seething with restrained anger. She didn't respond. After this, he keeps a closer eye on her.
Doey
★ He found you while roaming the halls. Not revealing himself just yet in an attempt to figure out what's happening. Doey watches as your breathing quickens. Short, shallow breaths fill your lungs. Leaving you just as quickly.
★ When he comes out of wherever he was hiding, the expression on his face is that of concern. "Hey, what happened buddy?" He asks. Looking you over for any new injuries. Seeing none, Doey puts his hand on your shoulder. But quickly removes it when you flinch.
★ When you finally regain enough composer to tell him what triggered you, he's pissed. Walking towards Poppy while trying in vain to keep his cool. Her plan didn't sit well with him before, but now he has no doubt it's a bad idea. And he's going to tell her that.

Imagine yet another scenario with the Player being a parental figure to Doey or specifically, the three kids that make up Doey ( Matthew, Kevin and Jack ). The Player just being an absolutely doting parent with as much affection and attention the kids want 🥹🫂
This ask reminds me of these drawings by leydraw. If you have the time, maybe check it out! Also, this takes place while the Player is still in the factory.
If you like my work, please consider commissioning me or leaving a tip on Ko-fi (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
Mathew, Kevin and Jack & parental Player
Tumblr media
★ You want to give them all the hugs, so you do. Matthew might act like he’s too "grown-up" for being babied, but don't be fooled. He adores every moment of it. Kevis is shyer and still unsure of you, if you try to touch him, he might get upset. So good luck there. But Jack? He soaks up every bit of love the Player has.
★ He finds some scraps of food? "Oh, good job! It's very kind of you to think about others." You say. Patting Doey on the back for his efforts. Every little accomplishment is met with praise. Because sometimes It's the little things that matter.
★ The Player’s soft spot for Doey quickly grows into a bond. Over time, Doey’s guard lowers. Though he’s naturally self-reliant, he starts to see the Player as someone who he can ask for help. Each time you tell him you're there for him, he believes you a little more.
★ After seeing everything he does for the Safe Haven, you make the decision to step up and help. He shouldn't need to take care of everyone by himself. Not anymore. So, you start to clean up the rooms whenever Doey isn't looking.
★ He sees cleaning the Safe Haven as "his job" and feels guilty if you do it for him. If he catches the Player tidying up without him, he’s immediately defensive. “Hey, that’s my job! You don’t have to do that!” Panicking ever so slightly.
★ Jack loved you from the beginning. From the first time the Player showed him kindness, he was attached. And he’s not afraid to show his need for attention, saying things like, “Can I sit with you?” or “Look what I found! Isn’t it cool?” Whenever Jack feels scared, he holds your hand.
★ Whenever the player tells Jack about the world outside the factory, his imagination runs wild. Thinking about all the animals, food and places he has vague memories of. “I think... I remember the smell of pancakes, what real?” he asks softly. Unsure what memories are his.
★ Mathew warmed up to you after Jack. Even as Jack ran up to the Player with open arms, Matthew hangs back, watching from a distance. Still wondering if the Player’s kindness is genuine or just an act. Over time he begins to realize that you genuinely care. If you hadn't, why would you have stayed?
★ Despite acting older than he really is, Mathew still wants the Players attention. He tries very hard to present himself as the mature one. But you know better. A simple “Good job, Matthew!” can make his day, even if he just responds with “Oh! Um, thanks.”
★ Kevin is the last to accept you. He didn't like you at all, because you were an employee. But the more the care you show, the more Kevin lets down his guard. He doesn't even realize how much he likes you until he finds himself feeling jealous over Jack and Mathew.
★ “Maybe they’re not all bad,” he begrudgingly admits to himself. Kevin might not openly seek the Player’s attention, but his actions speak louder than words. He starts lingering nearby, pretending to focus on something else but clearly hoping they’ll include him.
★The first time Kevin lets the Player hug him, it's after a particularly rough day. He approached you looking for support. Grabbing onto your shirt and refusing to look in your eyes. Though he’s initially stiff, he slowly relaxes into the embrace. Finally, allowing himself to trust you.

Yarnaby and doey deserved better guys!
Yarnaby was abused and isolated by the doctor who took pleasure in his pain and torture just because he was loyal and followed orders like a dog.
Doey was a mix of 3 confused conflicted children whose personalities clashed horribly.
A distressed (possibly past abused) problem child with a few friends, taken in his sleep.
A friendly slightly older child who is caring and protective of other children.
And a confused and emotional child who just wants his parents that doey as a collective killed in a fit of distress.
