it’s so fitting. when i ask people who grew up with the show how they remember the last agni kai duel, i’m frequently met with answers such as it being epic and exciting. but really, it’s just sad. zuko and azula’s entire relationship has been dictated and controlled by ozai. their hostile relationship is a product of ozai’s abuse and his attempts to keep them separate from each other and only loyal to him. because if they were to unite, they would most likely beat his ass. so by keeping them in this constant competition for his love, he elimates the risk of them acting out and going against his wishes. this scene is not a happy, satisfying end to azula and zuko’s arc. siblings aren’t supposed to wanna kill each other. it’s tragic. and what’s even more tragic is they don’t even realise how fucked up it is. and the music captures this devastating tragedy they’re so unaware of so well.

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

in the pilot jackie teases shauna abt her catholic phase and to that shauna responds that she liked the saints bc she thought they were so tragic. in the last ep of s1 during their fight the first insult shauna calls jackie is tragic. she calls her other things too but its so intresting that the first thing she thinks of is tragic. to me thats like a freudian slip. jackie was shaunas saint.
