something about rin being betrayed by everyone in her life and in her final moments turning against the only person who would never betray her because that’s all she’s ever known (they make me go insane)

rin and chaghan were so funny as a dynamic when altan was alive and even sometimes after because on one side rin was deeply struggling with experiencing familial love and her new powers/identity as a speerly/nikara girl and seeking validation from people she looked up to after being treated like dirt her entire life with altan who also didn’t know how to deal with family relationships because they were both war orphans and on the other side chaghan just rly wanted to fuck rin’s cousin

finally finished reading the poppy war trilogy and i have WAY too many things to say about it, but first let me shed light on one of the mysteries regarding altan's death (because as the last speerly, a legend itself, he remained a mystery to everyone even in death) and why chaghan couldn't find any trace of his soul after passing: it can clearly be linked to how his soul was connected to rin's, as the last two speerlies even their wills became alike (or at least altan made sure to mold rin's will like his), altan's soul was coexisting in rin's body, in rin's mind; chaghan couldn't find any trace of his soul because only after rin's death he would finally be free from any "speerly rage", because there would be no speerly left to pass on what the genocide of their nation truly meant to them.
but, while reaching this conclusion, i also had the realization that altan's soul was actually scattered among everyone. everyone had a little bit of altan in the end, right? rin gained his rage, suni gained his empathy, chaghan gained what we could call somewhat love.
altan's soul became part of rin's, yes, but it was also shared among everyone. therefore, in the end, he did not have anything to himself just like what he had learnt during all his life.

Just reread TPW and blown away by how much the themes of choice and vengeance were present from the beginning. How Rin was warned at every turn. How young the characters are, too, how if they had just been guided a little better, been allowed by circumstances to understand that this is not the way— maybe they would have chosen different.
IDK I was just struck by how many times Rin acted or seemed to think she had no choice, because of the war, and how often she was acting out of emotion. If she hadn’t gone to Speer right after Altan died she probably wouldn’t have erupted Mugen. Really I’m saying that they all really, really, needed therapy.

Haunting the Narrative Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haunting the narrative means that the character’s absence heavily impacts the plot. They’re not present when their influence is most strongly felt, whether they’re alive or dead!

Rin, having just blown up Mugen: Okay. I get it. You've had a really hard time lately, you're stressed out, a thousand people died-
Kitay: Over ten million, actually.
Rin: Not the point. Look, they're dead now and really whose fault is that?
Kitay: Yours!
Rin: That's right: no one's.

forever thinking about that one scene in the dragon republic when rin tries out the wings kitay made for her and they’re just so happy and when she comes down she shouts move! but he just grabs her wrist and swings them around until they collapse in a tangled laughing heap of leather and silk and limbs and she says “i love you” and kitay gives her a tired smile “i know”

there was no world in which rin died and kitay survived. is this mic on. THERE WAS NO WORLD IN WHICH SHE DIED AND HE LIVED HELLO IS ANYONE LISTENING. he says “you’re hurting me” and she stops her destruction in its tracks. he dies a bloodless death as hers is vengeful. nezha could never understand their bond. augh.

I know the Poppy War fandom is basically dead, but for those who are still around, i just want you to know that this apparently exists:
Tumblr media
It's basically a collection of scenes from Nezha's POV from books 1 and 2. According to the summary, anyway. I haven't read it yet.

short analysis of the tragedy of fang runin because she’s scratching at the walls of my brain like usual.
fang runin is probably the most tragic character i’ve ever read about. she left tikany to escape drugs, poverty and abuse, and then had to suffer tremendously by those factors again and again. she fought whole-heartedly to build a world free from corruption and oppression, even if her methods were… less than ethical on some occasions. hell, she refused to even sit on the throne because she deemed that there’s where her corrupt predecessors sat. that’s how badly she wanted to separate herself from the evil of nikara.
rin so desperately wanted to give her people the childhood and life she and the people she loved never got. and then only for her at the very end to realise that war and oppression won’t end and that her country could never be free. her country is broken beyond repair, and the only way for nikara to survive is for colonialism to put it the broken scraps together, the one thing rin fought all her life to defeat.
