Today I learned that Stiefvater is German for stepfather, I thought fans of the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stepfather would appreciate this information

So many men had tried to make her a queen. Now she understood that she was meant for something more. The Darkling had told her he was destined to rule. He had claimed his throne, and a part of her too. He was welcome to it. For the living and the dead, she would make herself a reckoning. She would rise.

talking about stanning or being a fan of "problematic" characters has long been a never ending fountain of discourse for shit tons of fandoms. their actions are analysed and they are put under a microscope. for many of these "problematic" characters their backstories may contain tragedy, trauma, and abuse. many fans and stans use this as ammunition to continue stanning the character and use their pasts to excuse their actions. there's a post on here somewhere that i cannot find that includes the statement "trauma and abuse can explain your actions, but it does not excuse them" and i think its pretty relevant to these discussions. it's good to understand why characters do the things they do and yes characters who have been traumatised and abused do appear more sympathetic in their actions than characters who commit atrocities for the sake of being atrocious. but being traumatised/abused does not give anyone a free pass to traumatise and abuse others. for characters who act immorally and hurt others for no justifiable reason, their trauma can explain their actions but cannot excuse them (like i said before) however said character can reform and redeem themselves, and can grow to be an enjoyable character. this redemption arc HAS to include them acknowledging the damage they've done and making reparations. not to stan atla on main but one of the best examples of this is prince zuko from avatar: the last airbender. (of course these discussions become more complex when the aforementioned characters mistreat equally problematic characters with tragic backstories, especially because the playing field is levelled a bit more and the latter usually equally mistreats the former, but for simplicity's sake we'll only briefly acknowledge that specific dynamic and maybe dissect it a little more later in another post, because not everything is so black and white and complex relationship dynamics do in fact exist, and discussing them requires more in depth analysis than i feel like putting in here). some things, however, are irreparable and cannot be redeemed, tragic past or not. being a sexual abuser or a fascist cannot be outweighed by a sympathetic backstory. furthermore some traumatised/abused characters commit atrocities for the sake of being atrocious and their previous trauma doesn't factor into it at all. by saying that traumatised and abused characters that commit irredeemable atrocities can be excused because of their backstory, you are demonising and stigmatising other traumatised and abused characers (and real people) because the implication is that victims of abuse are inevitably going to become abusers themselves, which is a fear that many vuctims have. Not to mention that it is basically saying their actions and impacts on others are justifiable and they are worth more than their victims. anyway this has been a psa please no one attack me this isn't worded very well but you get my point.

If you like reading someone's fanfic and writings the best thing you can do is
Comment / Kudos (esp comments are super exciting)
Reblog their links / writings if you see it
Make posts telling ppl about them or compiling your fave fics
Esp if it's a pairing that's not popular! And I'm not just saying this for myself, although it would be nice to have more interaction, but also because it's the number one way to help writers stay motivated and pump out that fan content!

They didn't know Alina was a grisha because she pushed down her powers, but I think Mal is actually just an amplifier, yes we haven't seen anyone be an amplifier and not a grisha besides him but he hasn't shown any powers throughout the whole series and it's just a genetic thing so...
So... Mal is Grisha, right? That's what I understood because he is/was a living amplifier, how come the people who went to the orphanage to test if the children were grisha didn't notice he was one?
Hmm.... interesting. Is Mal Grisha? I know he’s an amplifier, but does he qualify as Grisha? It’s been a bit since I’ve read s&b so I’m not really sure if they called him Grisha or not. I feel like amplifiers aren’t actually Grisha? Though again, I’m not quite sure.
