Koshien sounds: Lupin III (ルパン三世)
Almost one month away from Spring Koshien lottery!
One of my favorites parts of kōkō yakyū (aside baseball, of course) is the atmosphere surrounding every field. Personally I call it “Yakyū music” and yes, there’s basically a repertoire canon of almost every high school band of Japan with a baseball team.
Repertoire canon?
When I speak of a “musical canon” I’m not referring to the compositional technique that employs a melody with imitations of the melody played after a given duration (yes, it is counterpoint), but the term as a body of recognized pieces of music, a standard.
Following this criteria, many songs qualify for the “Koshien canon”. The first song I list here is Lupin the III
youtube
Lupin III - Played by Chūō Gakuin (Chiba)
If you’re an avid fan of Daiya no A like me, you may recognize this tune (yes, it’s Tetsu’s walk-up song!). Lupin III is japanese manga series written by Katō Kazuhiko. This manga tell the adventures of a thief band led by Master Thief Arsene Lupin III, grandson of Aresene Lupin, a character from Maurice Leblanc novels (also a thief!). Lupin III travels the entire world with his band to steal treasures avoiding the police.
The manga has been adapted to many formats, including an animated series. This song is the main theme of the second Lupin III anime series, composed by jazz musician Ōno Yūji. Lupin III is one of the most played songs among kōkō yakyū cheering squads; It’s energetic and sounds perfect for chants!

Hi!
I’m Drew, fan of Daiya no A and huge lunatic for Japanese High School baseball. I’m an uniform nerd, and I wanted to make a database of uniforms from Koshien, both summer and spring. I also want to have a little database of each tournament til now. I hope I can provide you very useful info about koshien and the koshien experience, including uniforms, official game scores, some scores from cheering bands (I also transcript a lot of “koshien music”), and more!
