Im at lunch but im thinking about Crocodile. Crocodile who’s father is so forgiving to the bastard that ripped his hand off, who stops hi from getting his own revenge and then turns him out. Crocodile stewed, he anguished in that rage and hurt. It was betrayal not just to his heart but to his ego - how devastating was that attack? Even as a teen he was proud of his strength but when in that moment he couldn’t do anything he turned from straight forward strength. If he couldn’t be strong enough for revenge he could he smart enough.
Crocodile spent years building his crew, building his strength. And near every night he slept and heard the rumbling of a storm and felt the hands of so many reaching to drag him under. When did he start to suspect he was cursed? And when did he push himself so deep into denial that he tried again?
Crocodile went to face the cause of all his problems. (Maybe if he stayed with Dragon and the tiny little form of their child then this would not have happened) cause Crocodile wanted revenge, even years later he wanted to soothe that burning ache. He did not succeed - Whitebeard pops saw him coming and acted before any one else. A shock of conquers’ - a warning that Crocodile ignored. So Whitebeard sunk his ship and if Crocodile survived then he would not step in again.
Crocodile should never have gone for Marco’s head. The tide’s ruler was already angry and haunting him for the blasphemy of taking what was not his. Now it was a specter of blood he would wake to - angry blue eyes framed in red, always ready to strike, to kill him and he can never move in the moment.
Crocodile is at the core of himself still an angry scorned child who keeps acting to soothe his ego, his need to win and by doing so he enrages those he shouldn’t.
And when he steps foot on Alabasta and begins to turn the kingdom against its king and steals the life from the people…well Genbu has lost its desert children once already. Poor Crocodile.
#one piece#Crocodile#UZUMAKI MARCO AU#also knowns as: crocodile pisses off two gods and multiple dead uzumaki and gets haunted for it#he really needs to accept defeat the poor stubborn bastard

The psychiatrist who wrote the criteria for narcissism just made an extremely important point about what’s wrong with diagnosing Trump with mental disorders
Dr. Allen Frances says in speculating about Trump’s mental health, we are doing a disservice to those who do suffer from mental illness. In a series of tweets, he explained why he doesn’t think Trump is a narcissist — and how harmful it can be for us to keep assuming that he is.

Naruto Thoughts
I.E: Naruto Headcanons
Iruka is not just a parent, he's the Ninja Mom™ of the village. Especially for Naruto
Let's be real, Naruto has always considered Iruka as both his mom & dad. Iruka was the one who actually cared about his grades and well being, but only knew Naruto for a year or two in the academy and wasn't able to correct all the harm caused by his neglect. Iruka is the one who taught Naruto how to care for and bandage his wounds properly, he is also the one who taught Naruto how to read. Iruka will praise him for a feat then turn around and scold him for being reckless.
Scars are good for high-rank shinobi but can be considered a shame for a low-rank
So scars are weird among all shinobi; if your young, of low rank, and have a lot of scars then your reckless and childish. If your older, of high or low rank, and have a lot of scars then your experienced and a survivor. If your younger, of high rank, with few scars then your talented and skilled but if your older, of high rank, and few scars then either your super talented or your a coward who shouldn’t have a rank that high.
Shinobi do not shake hands with just anyone.
This one is thanks to slyfoxcub's Naruto/HP fic. Because a shinobi will rely so heavily on their hands through their careers, wether it means wielding a knife or forming hand-signs, they have to be careful with not damaging their hands. And shinobi know how easy it is to damage a person's hand through even something as simple as a handshake. This means, however, that when they touch hands to someone say for a handshake it means not only do they respect that person but trust them. This also makes that scene between Naruto and Gaara after the rescue even more potent and powerful.
No shinobi represents their marriage through rings.
This goes back to hand thing. It can be easy for a ring, even a band, to get ripped off a person's hand or to slip off without someone noticing if they've been stressed and exhausted. Also most ninja find rings to be very garish and exposed even under gloves. Each village has its own particular way for a couple to 'lay claim' to each other.
Suna has tattoos that each couple creates together and placed on identical parts of each other's bodies; usually the heart, the ring finger, the back of the neck and upper back, and the upper arms. However a part of Suna's culture is about keeping a vow of love to oneself and their s/o. So the tattoos are placed in places not easily seen when fully clothed and they will rarely have reasons to let outsiders see them undressed. Their tradition holds cooperation and (hilariously enough with them not being Konoha) teamwork in high regard - after all as a desert people they know the value of being a unit over an individual better than most.
Konoha has elaborate (not the same as ornamental/useless) knives and daggers exchanged. These are specifically designed with one's partner in mind and exchanged upon their wedding night. The daggers are not taken on missions, but will be kept somewhere in the house (often the bedroom or communal area) and always kept sharp. It is a way of saying "I know you are strong but ever if I betray your trust and bring harm to you you shall have this blade I have given you to force me to stop". For all that Konoha is considered the "most peaceful" of the villages they take their vows seriously and it shows in how they are the ones with most hidden and bloody marking of marital status.
Kumo has matching ear cuffs made of their finest chakra metal to a particular design of each couple, there are rarely any extra metals used and never any gems too flashy for most shinobi. They pierce their ears in preparation for the vows and upon the promising of their vows they place them upon each other as both a symbol of trust and vulnerability to one's spouse. The earrings/earcuffs are also highly conductive and with most shinobi have lightning affinity they can become a last minute weapon of some sort - this is not ever to be treated like an insult. If your spouse had to use their cuff as a projectile and survived then you should hold that as pride for you chose an item that proved useful in the moment you could have lost them.
Kiri shinobi take the importance of their hands to an even higher stander. When a couple makes their vows they have gloves specially prepared for each other. These gloves are worn at all times when not in the comfort of one's home and even then are only removed when in the privacy of family/their spouse. This prevents to much skin contact from occurring with anyone who is not their spouse and also keeps their hands cleaner so symbolically they do not "taint" their spouse with the blood they themselves
Iwa holds tradition above all else when it comes to things like marriages for each marriage is to add to the overall strength of Iwa. They exchange robes upon the speaking of their vows; these robes are never worn outside the village and in-fact are often only worn in formal setting or in the privacy of one's home. Marriage is a personal and private affair even more so for them than other villages and they do not approve of allowing other to see so easily into your personal life if not needed. Its an idea of unity as a whole over the unity of a pair.
Divine Beasts/The Gods
The kami/gods are also referred to as Divine Beasts. Though they are not the shapers of the world itself they are the embodiments and rulers with domains and realms all their own. They almost never take humanoid forms, instead choosing to bear the forms of powerful creatures.
Each Divine Beast is worship by a single clan, some clans who came from the same initial lineage may both worship the same beast but it is rare for them not to have their own unique god; though sharing one and then having a unique one was also something that occurred. However, the civilians don't really worship the Divine Beasts - they either worship the Sun & Moon or simply kami who is considered to be an entity that was all divinity before it separated into the various beasts.
Unlike other villages Iwa did away with their clans instead having all the divine beasts as a collective pantheon of sorts. And with the founding of Suna many people began praying to Genbü along with their own clan deities if they had one (though not many did because Suna actually had/has the largest population of non-clan shinobi).
A Few Examples: The people of Uzu as a whole all worship the Azure Dragon-Seiryū but the Uzumaki branch-clan also worships the Nine-Tailed Fox-Inari. The Uchiha worship the Vermilion Phoenix-Suzāku. The Senju worship the White Tiger-Byakkö. The tribe of the Black Sand who become the main ancestors of the Subaku no lineage prayed to the Tungsten Tortoise-Genbü.
The Daiymo don't really have much power in the villages
The reason why these villages (city-states) with such a strong military power is because of that military power. You don't get shinobi except from a hidden-village and even the best trained civilan guards are barely able to stand against a well-trained genin.
So there is an understanding, the Daiyomo rule the cilvians outside the village and can even pop into the village and get 5-star treatment, but the village is the Kage's and the Kage are the one's who decide things. If the Daiyomo decides to start trying to interfer with the village's trade or decisions well the Kage will often remind the Daiyomo who has the real power in that relationship. The Daiyomo minds thier own business and the Kage doesn't take over the entire land. What about Rasa? What about Orochimaru? Well The Diayomo was giving missions to Konoha and in turn getting protection from Konoha. To remind the Daiyomo as he would have otherwise would mean an out and out war with Konoha (and there is a reason he chose to be part of a suprise invasion).

Correct me, is Marco's father Gaara? Or was it his brother?
How feared/respected was the Scarlet Spider by everyone? Does anyone else besides Whitebeard know about her connection to Marco?
Wouldn't that make him one of the few to fluently read the scriptures of the "lost century"?
Hello again Nonny! Sorry I didn't get the notification of your message till today! But the pure jump of energy and delight I got when i saw it was the best!! Brace Yourself because I have stuff to say:
You are correct! Gaara is Marco's father; in almost every single universe I have Kaida existing in she and Gaara are a couple at some point. Their one of the first real couples i ever wrote anything for and really have a special place in my heart for adoring and dedicated they are to each other when they are in a universe were they actually get to grow together into a life-long partnership. Marco has some...thoughts about Gaara and while most of them are positive its a very difficult thing for him to put to words since everything he knows about Gaara comes from Kaida and knowing someone from stories and knowing them yourself.
Kaida in turn is a completely different dynamic; Marco spent a good of his childhood idolizing his mother and even into current-cannon he is extremely proud of and her impact on the world as a whole. Because Kaida as the Scarlet Specter was fucking terrifying to the world government and the people. The Scarlet Specter gained her name for vibrant red hair and sword soaked in blood; if you saw her all you would see is a person in a porcelain mask and black&white armored bodysuit with only their hair as the color and if you were the victim you may not even see her. Kaida killed a lot of high ranking and notable people and as an assassin she rarely did it in flashy ways, cause of this most of her kills are rumors set by those who took out the jobs in the first place (and some people don't gossip about taking out assassination jobs on others). Her most famous kills though are three kills all taken out separately and are the most visible kills she is known for. Really if not for the fact she was more rumor than fact to a lot of civilians and that near the end of everything the Government finally caught a clue about her being a true shinobi and so they buried what they could then she would have been as infamous and feared as Rocks D. Xebec and the up-and-coming Gol D. Roger.
Whitebeard is actually the only person who knows who Marco's mother is, and as mentioned in Edward 'Whitebeard' Newgate's Sin Marco doesn't tell him until after he almost kills Crocodile and gets the Ryu-Ketsu back. When Marco eventually gets into a relationship (a serious one) he does share stories of his mom while omitting the fact she was the Scarlet Specter and from 800years in the past and even vaguer stories that she shared with him (nothing detailed basically). At least not until Marinford occurs.
As for the Poneglyphs, I actually have a whole post in my drafts about that. I will post it and link it in the master log when its finished. :) but just know that Marco does know how to read them to an extent.

i really adore just how loved marco is in the one piece universe, and what that means for his character.
marco is so beloved. as the first division commander of the whitebeard pirates, a veteran of over thirty years and three wars, he has unparalleled connections. marco knows many of the most famous, renown men in one piece, and they equally know of him.
figures like whitebeard, oden, shanks, ace, luffy, etc; everyone who has ever meant anything in the larger scope of the one piece world. every man who has left an unimaginable mark on history, for lack of better words, really likes marco. every icon of piracy that the plot frames in a positive light loves him, all by varying degree of knowing him but nonetheless. and i really think it speaks hugely of his integrity when you have that many figures loving you dearly. if their opinion of him is positive, then who's opinion can be trusted more?
(near) every enemy he's faced: admirals, big mom, king, queen, etc, many of whom you would doubt have the capacity for civil respect do just that. even marco's enemies seem to have a baseline respect as they face him, and just that level of universal likability, or at the very least admissibility, is something that i don't know if we see in any other character to that extent. everyone hates someone and everyone is hated by someone, but oddly, everyone really seems to have the time of day for marco.
maybe it's his supportive role; he's as pacifistic and gentle as an infamous pirate gets. his flames cannot burn, and while he is incredibly competent on a battlefield, that's not where his name is usually found; he's a doctor. the whitebeard's reach as a crew of thousands is far and wide as well- tales of his kindness must have been carried across every ocean, but that's all assumptions and educated guesses. regardless, everyone’s opinion of marco is lacking malice, even when they’re on opposite sides.
everyone likes him, and it's just a detail that i find really sweet. it says so much about his character; there’s a level of trust that can be placed in the opinions of these great man, and it's an opinion they all collectively share. marco is lovely, with everyone's agreement

Oh character analysis my beloved.
But in all seriousness Garp is not a bad character/person in a lot of phrases of the term.
Is what he does child endangerment and neglect? By our real world standards yes. By the standards of the world of one piece? Not really any worse than a great number of parental figures.
The real reason, in my opinion, that people hate Garp to such an extreme? It has nothing to do with him being a bit too realistic in our standards.
Its because Garp is Luffy. Garp and Luffy are parallels to a high extreme. They are mirrors of each other and we know this from the moment we meat him Water 7. ((And the garp hate didnt start with the reveal of his “training”))
No people hate Garp because he is as much a mirror to Luffy’s character as Teach is a foil. And people feel betrayed that he didnt jump in to save Ace (regardless that ace didnt want him to) like Luffy did.
Your Garp post is really good. I cannot bring myself to like him for many reasons. I dunno how to articulate it I just. Aaaggghhhh. For all his bluster and supposed belief in justice I think he’s a stubborn coward. Physical strength doesn’t make him brave or right. No matter what rules he bends when it suits him, he’s a boot licking attack dog in the end.
As a character I like him and I dislike him, which is why I love how he’s written.
But I do disagree with the take of him being a coward or an attack dog. He is absolutely stubborn, though.
It’s hard to explain why, but I’ll give it a try.
And this isn’t to shit on your or anyone else’s opinion about him, let me be clear. I may disagree with it, but I don’t hate it. He is a very complicated character, and it deserves more discussion than it gets.
The first thing we have to understand about Garp is, at his core, he is loyal to the marines before anything or anyone else. Why? God Valley and everything that came after.
God Valley is what made Garp the Hero of the Marines, and I think that was the catalyst. Garp is, as we all know, a loose cannon, and as the Hero of the Marines, Garp becomes the paragon. The ideal. And if that paragon and ideal bucks under your command because he’s a loose cannon, that inspires everyone to do the same, which is a problem.
And the direct tactics like threat and bribery won’t work on Garp because that would only make him turn on them, because as dense as he is, he knows when someone’s bullshitting him, and when he was younger, he wasn’t as entrenched in this idea of the Marines being more important than everything else.
Garp is loyal. He has always been loyal. Luffy is just like him in that regard. Probably Dragon, too.
So the World Government would take that loyalty and use it to propagandize.
Garp is not loyal to the Celestial Dragons. The Celestial Dragons are not the Marines. It’s the whole reason why he never took the admiralty in the first place. The World Government knows this, and so they don’t even try to sway him to the side of the Celestial Dragons. Again, Garp would smell that bullshit a mile away.
So instead, they supercharge his loyalty to the Marines. Work it in, little by little, over the course of years. Put the strings on his wrists and his ankles and call them medals and honors. Make him their little puppet. Watch him dance to their tune. Watch him choose the Navy over himself. Watch him choose the navy over his own family.
You’re the Hero of the Marines, Vice Admiral. You love the Marines. You stand with the Marines. You want the Marines to do good. You want the youngsters who look up to you to know the Marines are good. If you don’t keep up the good fight, they might lose faith in you the Marines. You don’t want that to happen, do you? Be a good Marine for them, then. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted. It’s all you’ll ever need. Oh, your son deserted? He’s always hated you the Marines. He’s the one who’s changed, not you. He isn’t your son anymore. He’s just a traitor. Steady on, Vice Admiral. Don’t lose another one.
Garp could cut the strings at any moment, but when he’s been convinced that he worked hard to earn those strings, and that there’s nothing left for him without them? Well, he’s not likely to cut them.
Not even when both his grandsons are on the executioner’s platform.
But…
Now hear me out here…
Marineford is the beginning of the end for all of that shit. Why? The real attack dog.
Sakazuki.
Sakazuki, who taunted Ace- who was free and alive- into a lose-lose scenario that cost him his life.
Sakazuki, who is now Fleet Admiral, and steering the Marines towards blatant authoritarianism.
Again, Garp is loyal to the Marines, but going against Sengoku’s intent to pass the torch to Kuzan was a break of tradition that put Sakazuki directly on his shit list. It was, fair and square victory over Kuzan or no, a hostile takeover.
Which is the exact thing that lead Garp to forming SWORD on the down low.
Except, with Sakazuki at the helm, and the fact that Garp went for him at Marineford, the World Government understands that it’s time for the Hero of the Marines to go bye-bye. His star student, too, if they can help it.
which leads us to the aftermath of Hachinosu.
Koby is free, and the torch of SWORD’s leadership has been passed to him.
Garp is not dead, and I don’t think he’s going to stay chained up indefinitely. Whoever Blackbeard is going to pass him off to, I doubt they’ll be able to contain him. That is if Kuzan doesn’t spring him before then.
I don’t know what he’ll do when he’s free.
What I do know is that he’s not going to be a marine anymore, but whether that’s too little too late for him is between Oda and the creative process.
All in all, very complex character. Deceptively complex character.
Is he a good person? Not really, no. But he’s not a good person in an uncomfortably realistic way. He’s like grandpa after a few too many times tuned into Fox News.
But is he irredeemable? Hell no. He’s already starting down the path towards a redemption arc, I think.
