I’m taking a stroll through a nature preserve in Rio de Janeiro, and I notice the mouth of a cave with stalactites and an encompassing flora. Two parts of my soul were at war; my curiosity to go in and explore vs. my overwhelming terror of dark, cold, enclosed spaces. Curiosity won. As I slowly creep into the cave, my imagination is conjuring images monstrous trolls, 20 foot bone crushing pythons and blood thirsty bats. A minute in my harrowing quest I begin to relax my shoulders, my eyes adjust to the darkness and I let my guard down. Huge mistake. Immediately I get spooked by a couple of screeching bats. I let out an unnerving scream as I frightfully run back outside to find I have a lovely audience who witnessed my embarrassing performance. I stand tall, flick the dirt off my shoulders, played it cool with a meager grin, “Yeah, ummm there’s bats in there.... I’m gonna go now”, walks away slowly.
