a snapshot of rio and y/n’s soft beginnings, awkward confession & the person rio made her muse one year ago.

warnings: all fluff (some crack), reader is called pretty once, marriage is joked about so i used mx.

rio had a problem. well, she had a few. she couldn't stop her growing obsession with animal edits on tiktok or buying vintage cameras. the most dire, scary, heart racing one? she loved someone.

y/n was a silly crush in class at first. they were a quiet one, eyes too focused on the work placed in front of them to notice the watching eyes of another.

it started with a history project. rio shifted over to y/n’s desk, didn't wait a beat before openly airing her annoyance over the course. y/n couldn't help the small laugh that left their lips. they agreed, but led the charge in completing the project.

rio couldn't let their interactions be a one-time thing. she was hooked. it was her mission to see more of the quiet reader outside of that boring ass history class. she invited them to lunch with her friends. her heart swelled when she saw y/n’s personality bloom from the tight kept shell it was always in.

as months went on, y/n’s eyes finally shifted away from their books. they took more of the brown curls, sweet dreamy eyes and laughter full of life that now surrounded them. it didn't take long for y/n to understand that they liked rio… a little bit, is what they told their best friend cleo every night.

“if i gotta hear one more time that you DO NOT like this girl. i will fly over and beat your ass,” cleo clapped as she spoke. it was their weekly facetime call session. y/n got a text from rio inviting them to the city fair, sparking another long winded rant about how much they clearly don't (totally do) like rio.

“but i don't! i mean not much. but cleo. what the fuck do i wear to the fair. i gotta look good!” y/n spoke with urgency. their bright smile defeated the argument they tried (clearly not hard enough) to convey.

it was the day y/n and rio had been marking down on their calendar. the city fair was in town and it was their 4 month friendiversay. y/n was set to meet rio and their mutual friends at the entrance. they fidgeted with the silver jewels that littered their fingers. they were in between pulling at their ear and biting their lip as they watched people line up at the entrance of the fair.

rio, ariana and claire finally made it after making y/n pace for 20 minutes. rio jumped out the car at the sight of y/n. pulling them into a hug, she spoke into their ear, “dude i'm so fucking happy you're here.”

y/n wrapped their arms around rio’s waist just as tight. it seemed like rio squeezed their body with the intention of melting the tension in their shoulders away. y/n felt like their face was capable of smiling again as the two hugged.

“i am too,” they muttered, glancing over at rio as they pulled away. y/n greeted their other friends before they all got into line to get their tickets.

about an hour had passed already. the group of 4 went on a few fast rides and did booths games. the friend group had adopted their new child, a brown bear almost 6 feet tall. it was a team effort. rio and claire played the rigged ring toss game while ariana and y/n were their cheerleaders. and after losing five rounds and most of their tickets, cheers and roaring laughter erupted as y/n picked the stuff animal they wanted.

“so what are we naming him?” y/n couldn't resist laughing at the shear size of the bear. ariana was quick to video them struggle to hold him, laughing along. rio found the sight endearing. she could feel the smile forcing itself on her lips as y/n kept attempting to figure out the best way to hold the bear. instead of helping them or thinking of a name, rio pulled out her favorite digital camera.

“smile for me,” rio teased as she got the shot ready.

the first picture on rio’s instagram post was of y/n holding the tall brown bear in front of the ring toss stand. the multicolored lights surrounding the stand illuminated the picture. rio’s digital camera caused the people walking behind y/n to blur; sole focus was on rio’s future lover. their arms wrapped around the stuff animal’s (now named albert) neck as it was pressed against their cheek. almost all of their thirty-two teeth were visible as they smiled, their eyes appeared to be glistening and you could almost hear the goofy laugh through the screen. though the picture was grainy and a little static, the sony camera highlighted the most important detail, y/n.

same could be said about the second picture on the post: a photobooth strip of rio and y/n that same night.

ariana and claire claimed to already be starving and separated from the other two to find some food. rio looked around at the rides to see that the lines were growing. most had signs propped up with a wait time of an hour or more.

“wanna just walk around then?” y/n’s voice cut through rio’s thoughts with ease. they had managed to get a better grip on the ginormous bear as they looked towards rio.

“yeah, if you want. maybe the lines will simmer down later,” rio offered a small smile at the h/c. her stomach was bubbling realizing that she was alone with her crush. rio could feel her tongue swelling up as her mind ran rampant with the desire to spill her heart out.

as the two walked around, y/n made comments about some of the rides they passed. they are an avid adventure junkie and was in the middle of telling a story about almost dying on a roller coaster.

“wait, fuck the worker for letting you go on the ride.” y/n laughed at rio’s reaction so hard that tears brimmed their eyes. the story was when they were a kid a worker let them go on a ride even though they were a few inches too short. the seatbelt on the ride wasn’t secure for their shorter body and they almost slipped out when the ride was upside down.

“i almost threw up when we got off. legs wobbling and everything.” y/n wiped their eyes, being mindful not to drop albert. rio smiled at them as the duo continued on to explore.

their conversation shifted as their steps progressed through the grassy area. maybe it was the lights or the contagious laughter that refused to die down as they spoke. more accurately, maybe, it was the small fire-like spark that came from their intertwined hands that convinced rio to let her thoughts go. she took deep breaths as y/n spoke about whatever came to their mind. part of rio was listening but the other, more weighted part, was preparing the anxiety that flooded her body.

y/n let the crowd noise take over after they finished their story. with a firm hand on albert, they lightly swung the jointed hands they had with rio.

“you make me feel okay to be myself.” rio suddenly whispered, standing closer to y/n as they passed people. her voice was slow and calm. though the message was hushed with nervousness,

“like… i can be silly with you and not feel stupid or judged,” she continued. rio’s eyes refused to look at the h/c but y/n’s were stuck on her’s. rio used their connected fingers to guide them to a more quiet spot. she closed her eyes and let out a deep sigh, letting go of y/n’s hands to play with the ends of her curls.

y/n had the brown bear wrapped in their arms as they waited patiently for rio. their heart was pounding just as loud as the screaming kids on the rides. it seemed like the muscle wanted to escape from their ribcage as the silence swallowed them both. they stayed still for rio, hoping the quietness would help her finish the thoughts y/n had been dreaming of hearing.

after a moment of breathing, rio opened her eyes to see y/n’s soft smile and curious look. rio dropped her shoulders from their high horse at the sight, “see, you're doing it now.” she pointed at the other. y/n smiled just widened in return.

“i just- i feel good in your hands. i feel safe to be quiet or loud, to share my feelings or just be in your comfort. it's like what people would describe home to feel like.” her voice wavered with slight uncertainty but glancing into y/n’s accepting e/c eyes, she was able to grasp her anxiety.

y/n stepped closer to rio. their hands slowly slip into the curly-headed girl’s, holding it tightly. they saw the shiftiness in rio’s gaze and uneven breathing.

“you know. you have the strangest habit of, i guess you can say, making me come alive.” y/n whispered. their eyes full of something unspoken, “i really like you rio.”

rio’s face was flushed. her skin was warm like she’d been standing too close to the sun. the duo didn't say anything at first, just let the words hang between them. eventually, a chucke broke between them, resting any reminisce of anxiety or fear. y/n looked around as the people passed by, unable to contain the smile adorning their lips. rio’s eyes didn't leave their face.

“yeah?” rio brought her hand up to gently hold y/n’s face.

“yeah…”

the giddy pair continued to walk until they found a photo booth nearby and rio was dying to capture this moment. y/n got into the small box first, figuring out a way to maneuver albert to fit inside. rio paid the $5 required and sat next to them.

“albert might just have to be in the pictures. he’s clearly dying to be in them,” y/n snorted and nodded to the top of the bear's head peeking in the monitor.

rio shook her head, “he’s taking to his a child role well i guess.”

they got comfortable on the bench before rio pressed the start button. a voice spoke through the machine as the couple got ready, “now for the fun part. you will have four chances to pose. so have fun! and make sure you look at the camera. get ready!”

the two nervously grinned as the instructions were given. near the end of the monologue, they start talking about what pose to do, “okay what do we do first?” y/n looked over at rio.

“uhh i dont know.” rio snickered in response, causing y/n to roll their eyes.

“think if something!”

“just look in the camera!” rio pointed to the small black box below the monitor.

they both had cute little smiles at the camera. once the click indicating the photo was taken, the couple giggled.

“i wanna kiss your cheek,” y/n shyly suggested. their eyes glanced over at rio’s for approval.

with an equally timid grin, rio replied, “okay.”

y/n scooted closer to rio’s figure. they raised their hand up to brush a curl laying on her cheek.

y/n placed a soft kiss on the girls cheek. easily, rio looked into the camera with a smile. already her cheeks were slightly red.

the machine clicked again. y/n moved their head on rio’s shoulder. “your signature?” they glanced up at the girl.

rio looked down at y/n. she tucked away a piece of hair that was blocking the h/c eyesight.

“hell yeah.” rio and y/n looked towards the camera. both of their hands coming up with their middle fingers in the air. rio smirked softly, y/n stuck their tongue out.

the 3rd click went off and it was now the final photo. rio knew when they walked into the photo booth what one of her poses was gonna be.

y/n was a giggly mess this entire day and being this close to rio didn't help. they lifted her head off the rio’s shoulder. rio’s hand came to rest on y/n’s cheek, subconsciously rubbing at the skin.

“can i kiss you?” rio asked, her voice soft. Her gaze flicked between y/n’s eyes and her lips.

y/n bit their lip, nodding slowly. they’d been thinking about that all day, and now words were hard to find.

rio leaned in, lips barely grazing y/n.

“you're so pretty…”

rio connect their lips together. y/n nervously smiled into the kiss as their eyes closed.
