(sorry for all of my tags op. I am very passionate about this topic specifically.)
I love the Hunger Games and I have shit to say!
So, Madge gives Katniss the mockingjay pin to remind her of her district which is very cool in the grand scheme of things for a few reasons.
One, upon introducing Madge as a character, Katniss says she doesn't think Madge considers her a friend, but then basically describes what a friend is. This tells me that Katniss doesn't really see herself as likeable and she's OK with that. Like, 'yeah this girl who sits with me at school everyday and talks to me when I sell her dad strawberries isn't my friend, I don't have friends'. I don't think Katniss is particularly upset about not having friends, but it makes it all the more impactful when Madge gives her the pin because it would have been a surprise to Katniss that Madge valued her so highly. Though she probably just saw it as pity since at that point Katniss was fully convinced she wouldn't survive and also thought everyone else was betting on her death as well.
The second reason being that I believe the pin originally belonged to Haymitch's district partner (though, he would have had three since obviously he partook in the Quarter Quell that required four tributes from each district). Maysilee Donner was an ally of Haymitch, and he ended up having to watch her die having arrived just too late to save her. The ties the symbol has to Haymitch is really symbolic to me because of all the parallels between him and Katniss, and I think part of the reason why Haymitch grew so fond of Katniss in the end was because she reminded him of Maysilee, so he wished to save Katniss in return for being unable to save Maysilee. For that reason, I think it's sweet that Katniss bears a symbol that ties her back to Maysilee.
Finally, the fact that it became the symbol of the revolution. Its cool because the mockingjays are named in such a way because they basically make a mockery of the Capitol's failed attempt at spying on the districts, and ended up being more useful to the districts in the end, shown by how Rue uses them to communicate in District 11 and in the arena. Using a mockingjay as an anti-Capitol symbol just rubs it in their faces more that they failed to control the districts. Additionally, the fact that the pin didn't even originally belong to Katniss also represents how Katniss is an unwilling leader. The revolution she heads is representative of the people, of her people. It isn't, and never was, individual to her. The historical significance of the badge as well as the fact that it was a gift makes it all the more significant and special as a revolutionary symbol, because I think it properly distinguishes what Katniss represents and who she's fighting for.

“Haymitch Abernathy and Vera Everdeen were, at their cores, lonely people. Lonely people who now had a lot of new responsibilities and excess steam they needed to blow off. They agreed from the very start that this whole arrangement was purely physical.
And up until the week before the third Quell announcement, that’s indeed all it was."
My very first E-rated/NSFW fic. Let me know what y’all think. I have a hayzelle one in the works with a neat little twist that I hope y’all will enjoy. Stay tuned!

okay but hear me out— Gale Hawthorne also needed a dandelion in a field type of love that would have killed the raging fire of unreleased anger that he carried. do I blame him for Prim’s death?
No, I don’t actually. Why?
Well, Coin was a manipulative individual and she was aiming for personal gain when it came to the revolution and what easier way to get there than with angry souls like Gale, to be used as pawns to get her checkmate.
Sure the bombs were Gale’s idea, but Coin was the one to execute the idea and Prim, unfortunately was collateral damage.
So, yes, I am going to be a Gale apologist.

let’s also not forget that Mrs. Everdeen has a long and troubled history with death. she lost her best friend in matters out of her control. her family—presumably—abandoned her when she chose to marry her husband. speaking of them, where the fuck where they when their son-in-law died, huh? when their daughter was a widow with two young children? they didn’t try to reach out?
not only that, but without her husband, Mrs. Everdeen is completely out of her element in the Seam. no matter how much people respect her for her medical skills, she literally sticks out like a sore thumb and may not feel it’s her place to ask for help/doubt people will help her if she asked. this may or may not be true, of course, but depression is a bitch!
i'm gonna start being mean. if you have enough understanding for katniss's depression then how are you calling katniss's mom selfish for her response to her husband's death. you do understand what catatonic depression is right? you understand that she didn't purposely abandon her children?

Here she is! My most favorite girl in the entire Hunger Games franchise. Maysilee will always be famous to me. I'll probably post Miriam (Mrs. Undersee) next. Everyday outfit + arena outfit.

LHS Haymitch Rarepair Ramble #1: Haymitch/Mrs. Everdeen
I always meant to make a post explaining the dynamics of my many Haymitch rarepairs, but I never quite got around to it. I guess now’s a good a time as any to start.
A lot of people make comparisons between Katniss and her mother and Katniss and Haymitch, but let’s cut the middle woman out for a second.
I think Haymitch and Mrs. Everdeen have a lot more in common than one would initially think. The best example of this—besides both caring about Katniss—is their relationship with death.
Both of them have lost numerous people in matters out of their control. For Haymitch, it was his mother, brother, and adolescent sweetheart. For Mrs. Everdeen, it was her husband, her daughter, and (presumably) her parents. The most obvious common thread they share in that regard is, of course, Maysilee.
Their similarities continue with how they process grief. After losing their loved ones, they both shut themselves out from the world, unable to access any sort of professional help and having to trudge though it manually.
I think these two having this relationship to death and grief and having Maysilee in common is a good starting point. I think what they both need is the knowledge that someone else feels what they feel and I can see them helping each other work through that grief in a healthy manner.
Additionally, Haymitch one of is Katniss’ primary paternal figures in the story. Him and her mother coupling up feels natural to me, especially considering what they have in common (and that they’d be a seam/merchant pair). I think he (in addition to therapists) could help mother and daughter pick up their broken pieces and put them back together—or at least as best they can considering everything that’s happened between them.
Haymitch knows what it’s like to be hurt and lonely and he knows Katniss and her mother are both hurt and lonely, too. None of them deserve to wallow alone in misery anymore. They all deserve support. They all deserve to have family again. It’ll never be the same as before, but it’ll be something.
Phew! That was longer than I expected it to be. I’ll be making similar analytical posts about my other Haymitch rarepairs eventually, I just had these two on the mind today. See y’all soon!
(Also, just as a silly fun fact, I call Mrs. Everdeen Vera, like aloe vera. I love me a good punny name.)

I imagine that SO MANY people know that katniss is aromantic before she knows herself and that is so real like:
madge knows because she herself is aroace and also she asked katniss how she felt abt gale once and was like: ahhh
mrs everdeen knows because well she knows katniss enough (we are looking at her finding ways to help katniss not have to act like she's peeta's girlfriend when they come back from the games in catching fire)
prim knows because she knows katniss better than enyone
haymitch and johanna know because they themselves are aromantic (I hc johanna as an aromantic demisexual lesbian and haymitch as aromantic ace-spec)
finnick knows because he's friends with johanna and he observed the peeniss dynamic in cf (and we can't forget the “you love him, maybe not like that, but you do” moment in mj)
can't decide if peeta figures it out like near the end of cf or a like a year down the line of the two of them “growing back together”, but he DOES figure it out. And he is the one who, when katniss tells him in some way that she's aromantic but it doesn't take away from that she loves him, peeta just replies: I know??? why are you telling me this?? katniss: you KNEW?!?? peeta: yeah, didn't you???
gale does NOT know until katniss comes out to him like YEARS after the end of the rebellion. he doesn't 100% get it, but is supportive and is very happy that she decided to come out to him.

back on my maysilee and mockingjay pin bullshit
the fact that maysilee is more important to the mockingjay pin’s story than madge and yet madge gets more of the attention that she does.
let me be clear, madge has barely broken containment, if at all. sometimes I’ll talk about her and a lot of people still won’t know who she is. but I’ve seen a lot more people know who she is than I have seen people who know maysilee.
don’t misunderstand me, I love madge. adore her. you go you funky little lesbian. and she undoubtedly plays an important part in the mockingjay pin’s story, but… the pin being maysilee’s is more important to the story over all.
let me explain. the reason I say this is because the emotional weight the mockingjay pin carries could still be maintained without madge being present, so long as someone the person who gave katniss the pin was someone who knew maysilee (or is otherwise connected to her like madge).
I’ve considered different ways of incorporating more of the mockingjay pin’s symbolism into the movies without changing too much. ideally, of course, it would happen just as it does in the books. if it didn’t however, I think katniss’ mother could’ve given her the pin and the emotional weight would’ve been maintained. she knew maysilee, and the connection between katniss and haymitch to maysilee, through the pin, would be maintained.
on one hand I don’t want people ruining her, but on the other DAMNIT I WANT MORE PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT MAYSILEE WITH. I DON’T CARE HOW BRIEFLY SHE APPEARS. THE SYMBOL OF THE ENTIRE SERIES BELONGED TO HER. SHE’S AN IMPORTANT CHARACTER DAMNIT. IT ISN’T JUST MY AUTISM.
sorry got a bit intense there for a moment. maysilee enjoyers I hope you have a good day everyday. please post your thoughts about her. I would love to hear them.
