Annie: There are legends of people born with the gift of making music so true, it can pierce the veil between life and death; conjuring spirits from the past...and the future. In ancient Ireland, they were called Filí. In Choctaw land, they called them Fire Keepers. And in West Africa, they were called Griots. This gift can bring healing to their communities. But it also...attracts evil....

The Chronicle: weeks one - seven
Tumblr media
oh, girl...first, let me start by saying I am so sorry for having neglected this blog for seven weeks. i have been on go since the semester started -- which is not a bad thing for once, lol.
that said, lets talk about the first seven weeks of my second semester of grad school, shall we?
okay, so this semester has been so engaging and just overall stimulating that I don't have anything to really gripe about. this is a surprise to me, seeing as though i am fully online for the three classes i'm taking.
i'm in an energy humanities course that is putting me through an existential crisis about the world but is also forcing me to really try to understand and research what is going on around me, so i'll take my bi-weekly freakouts about the current state of the world if it means that i'm ultimately learning how to deal chile.
in a sociolinguistics class, i feel like i'm really shining because it's like my bread and butter! we have a final paper coming up, and i'm probably going to actually write the paper for a summer project i did for an internship presentation in summer '23, which is great because hopefully i can publish it or show it to the professors i want to be on my capstone which is also literally around the corner.
lastly, i'm taking a writing about place class that has been really intriguing in helping me to establish what community means to me. for the class this week we are reading mike davis's city of quartz and i don't even have the words to describe how fond i am of his writing style so far like...it's so descriptive and punching -- flowery without being annoying or fiction-like. he does not hold back in his history of la, and it's so refreshing. i hope to be just as good of a writer one day tbh.
anywho, as usual, thank you for reading this far! the album of the month for feb. was studio ghibli official b-sides and rarities album (2022)!
happy black history month, btw -- i love us!

The Chronicle - Spring '25
Tumblr media
hi everyone!
so, the semester started for me on 1/13, and as i may have mentioned, i was back home for the break for about a month and a half. i am all online this semester, which so far isn’t so bad. i am actually very engaged in my courses this semester; i’m taking sociolinguistics, energy humanities, and writing about place!
each course has proven to be wildly relevant to today (especially with recent political goings-on), and i find myself hyper-aware of the state of the world beyond my little community. i don’t say this to mean that i am never or wasn’t aware before now, but i am engaging at a level that i think truly means i am a graduate student.
that being said, i am excited about the rest of the term and hope to get more involved with a few communities on campus, like the black student union and graduate associations. i have yet to send a cold email to the professors i would like to supervise my capstone, but i plan on making that happen soon.
i have a few big decisions to make this spring; renewing my lease or moving back home, going back to tutoring or the grocery store for work, picking my capstone project, and getting together a list of universities for my next degree! it is slightly overwhelming for me right now, but i’m sure everything will work out one way or another. i would also like to get more involved here, so in addition to album of the month, i will also be sharing what books i am reading in a virtual book club with my friends from back home! i am gonna give them their own post, so be on the lookout for that for sure.
as i wrap this post up, i would like to encourage everyone to really lean into community--find something you can do to help and make an effort to share your services. the road ahead on a global scale is going to be…interesting, to say the least, and we all need to be looking out for each other. to my fellow black, queer, woman, and poc family, i love y’all deep.
i could go on, but, instead, i will just say thank you for taking the time to read this post, and know that this blog is open and a safe space to all of you who read. my inbox in always open <3

The Chronicle: Fall '24
the semester is finally over; everybody, take a shot!
Tumblr media
okay, so the semester was over for me on 12/9, but I literally worked and wrote non-stop until then...it was honestly ridiculous, and I will never do that kind of work (especially when I am not invested/interested ever again). like no joke, when the day I flew back home, I didn't make it to my parents until 7pm, and I worked well into the next morning (8am to be exact) on drafts that were due the same night/day.
I swear it felt like my life was falling apart from mid-October to the day after the semester ended. On the bright side, i did well on my essays in the end and passed the semester as a whole.
there is A LOT I could complain about concerning one specific class/professor, but i have decided to not give it any more of my energy than I already have--just know I worked my butt off just to get a B+, and I will probably hold on to that for a minute because I know I deserved better.
in other news, i have already picked out classes for the spring and I will be at 18 of the 30 credit hours required for my MA!!! i am excited and scared all at once but can't wait for what is in store either way.
in the new year, i am going to try harder to be more active here as I work through finding a school/life balance that was literally non-existent for this first semester.
to all of the readers I have gained since starting, thank you so much for going on this journey with me, and I wish you all a restful and fulfilling holiday. as we go into the spring semester, i wish you all the best! thank you again for rocking with me :p

The problem is that America has beaten down its people for decades and gotten them weak and desperate and now promises a way out, a way to transcend and rise above, through selling out their fellow man. They encourage contempt and hatred as one way ticket to not being included with the masses being death marched to poverty or imprisonment or whatever other bitter end surely awaits the people they’re told are beneath them. An embarrassingly large chunk of white men are just straight up nazis these days as a way to dissociate from the rest of the carnage around them, even if they’re broke and uneducated and from an impoverished background themselves. They’ll vote for and align themselves with anything for a taste of power and control that makes them feel a little less helpless. The same goes for minorities. They’ll punch down if they think it’ll get them somewhere, even if in reality they’re punching sideways. I don’t know what else to say, really. Everybody is so incredibly hateful. We are a loveless, disrespectful nation. We are so spread thin by our government that we would sell each other out in a heartbeat for an ounce of relief. This is what we’ve come to.
It’s not even about Trump at this point. He’s gonna get in office and do whatever he does and it’s gonna be a mess but whatever. This is indicative of deeper problem. This is just the ugly consequence of the already present reality in this country that we all just despise each other. There is no solidarity and there is no love. Trump being in office or not doesn’t change the fact that America is a breeding ground for violent hatred. Trump has given people a shining example of how to give in to the worst parts of your human nature and make it the problem of everyone around them. I don’t even know what we’re supposed to do about that. I don’t know if that’s something we can come back from. And if anything COULD be done about it, Trump certainly wouldn’t do it. Honestly, Kamala probably wouldn’t have either. We are so deeply fucked.
However, I must say, if you voted for Trump, I hope that peace never finds you. Instead, I hope clarity strikes you someday like a clap of lightning and you have to live the rest of your life with the knowledge and guilt of what you’ve done and who you are as a person.
Love yall. Shit is so bleak but the world keeps spinning until it doesn’t, I guess. We can’t count on the government for literally even a shred of progress or hope so just keep up the good fight in your own personal lives. That’s literally the only thing to be done at this point. Stay safe out there. Maybe buy a gun.

Having friends on tumblr is really great. I often refer to you guys in real life as “my friend from england/autralia/california/new york” and it makes people think I’m very well traveled when really I’ve just spent a lot of time on the Internet.
