Final Advising Meeting
In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
Because ArtsFest is over and my project is completed, most of what Bimbola and I discussed was about reflecting on my project. I decided that the only regret I had was not planning out my color scheme, because one side of the piece has more contrast than I’d like it to. Overall, we both agreed that my final product was very successful and that I learned a lot about visual art through the process.
We also talked about how we tend to plan visual art without thinking that the project is going to change, and discussed how having class time and feedback from peers helped get rid of this mentality. I thought the feedback from my peers was incredibly helpful, and actually completely changed the way I completed my piece.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
The only event left is academic showcase, and my project is finished, so I don’t actually have any more work to complete/steps to take with my project.
Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.
I have no more questions!

Today (April 29th), I attended the 46th annual Spring Koto Recital at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. The performance consisted of kotos, a vocalist, flutes, and shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instruments). I’ve never attended a performance using traditional Japanese instruments, and it was wonderful to experience that side of Japanese culture. They knelt on the ground and read their music in traditional Japanese koto notation, not western style sheet music. I found this to be quite impressive, because the ensemble had such diversity when it came to the ages, races, and experiences levels of everyone onstage.

On April 13th, I participated in and watched the Winter Guard International World Class Independent Finals. Fifteen color guards made it to the third and final performance, held at the UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. The participating color guards came from all over the country, and this competition was the final culmination of what everyone worked towards over the course of the season. As much as I enjoyed performing in front of thousands of people, my favorite part of this event was finally having the opportunity to watch other color guards that performed at such a high level. It’s always an incredible experience to be able to watch performers more advanced than myself and to learn from them.

Today (March 28th), I attended the Concert in Close Quarters with René Marie. I’ve got to start with that she is for sure my favorite artist that the arts program has brought in so far (while I’ve been here, of course). While she is for sure incredibly talented in her vocal abilities, René spent most of the event telling us her story, and she is also an incredibly talented storyteller. She used her music, interspersed within the story, to help reiterate her passion for singing, but focused mostly on her personal journey, her morals, and what she had discovered about herself throughout her life. Overall, I found it to be a very personal and inspirational event. She was talented, engaging, personable, and so many other great things. Her story made me want to dedicate more time to the arts, and to finding my own passion and my own way to express it. Please bring her back!

In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
Bimbola and I talked about how I plan to present my project and what kinds of flowers I could potentially have on the side. We also discussed details about the university-printed posters and how to make it (photoshop recommended, but since I have no experience with photoshop, I will probably use publisher or power point). Lastly, she gave me very helpful feedback about using the watercolor pencils, including adding more shadows, avoiding black, and purchasing thicker paper to avoid wrinkling while the watercolor dries.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
I am ready to start on my final piece, but I first need to purchase the paper. In the meantime, I also plan on (and have started) practicing every plant with water color before I do it on my final piece. My last step will be to put the poster together for presenting my project at ArtsFest and the academic showcase.
Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.
No questions as of right now! If I come up with any, I’ll email Bimbola but I feel pretty set.

In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
Bimbola and I discussed the background of my project and my creative process so far. She also helped me realize some limitations I had set for myself, like trying to only choose from poems to base my project on. While describing a story that I found a poem in, Bimbola suggested that I use the whole story instead of just the poem, and I think this really helped in that it made me realize it’s my project and I don’t have to stick to my original plan if I find a better idea. She also suggested I use color in the final project, and because I am not a very skilled visual artist, we discussed some mediums that would be good for me as a beginner (we settled on trying Prisma colored pencils).
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
I plan to change my timeline slightly. Originally, I planned to sketch and practice drawing different plants and flowers that I might want in my final, but I think it makes more sense to switch those steps. It would be good to plan out exactly what I want in my picture, and then to practice drawing those specific elements. My next step will be to research flowers, plants, and any other elements I want in my garden, and then draw my “architectural sketch” so I have a layout of exactly what I want. After that, I need to practice each element separately before putting them in a final project.
Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.
I have no questions right now, the meeting was very helpful!

Today (Tuesday, February 27th), I attended the showing of Step: Lethal Ladies of Baltimore at the Hoff Theater in Stamp. The film showcased and followed the lives of a step team from an all girls private high school in Baltimore. The arts component of the film involved the practice and rhythmic skill involved in stepping, as well as the intensity involved in the actual dance steps that the girls performed. The interesting part about this documentary was that it didn’t just include their practices and performances. It also followed them in their everyday lives and struggles, which gave more insight into the inspirations, meanings, and movements behind their step pieces.

On Saturday, January 27th, I attended and competed in an indoor color guard competition in Springford, New Jersey. The competition consisted of both scholastic and independent groups, meaning some groups were affiliated with a school and some were independent of a school. It was an incredible display because of the range of talent and design complexity. The lowest classes had middle schoolers, while I watched and competed with performers in their late twenties. Color guard shows are always a great display of dedication to a performance activity, and because of my involvement in the show, I appreciated my fellow performers.

Today, I️ attended the annual Fall Choral Collage at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. It featured the UMD Men’s Choir, Treble Choir, and University Chorale. It showcased each group and their respective guest conductors. I️ enjoyed this performance because not only did it contain lots of talent, but it was also free and completely open to the public. I️ do not usually find such events at the Clarice that are so easily available to me, and this one stood out because of how accessible it is.

Today’s Coffee and Crafts event involved taking a printed picture, taping over it, and soaking the picture in water. After a few minutes, we scraped the paper off and the ink had transferred to the tape, which we then stuck on glass jars. This event was a good way to involve visual art in people’s every day lives. The method is very simple and involves household objects, making it a useful art medium for everyone.

On October 12th, I attended the “Good Trouble” lecture held in the south chapel, by Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin. They discussed their co-authored book, March Book Three, which followed John Lewis in his journey as a chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s. It is the first comic book to ever win the National Book Award. The lecture was split between the two authors, and John Lewis’s descriptions of the events were powerful and moving. He didn’t just talk about his book, he had a talent for emphasizing the importance of what happened and what we should still be doing about it today. Andrew Aydin’s portion was also inspirational because he talked about his comic book vision, and that his idea was rejected by many people before they could find someone to publish the book.

Today (October 3rd, 2017), I attended the art gallery in the Stamp Student Union here on campus. The gallery is run by the Contemporary Art Purchasing Program, and are right now displaying new arrivals from six undergraduate students here. The goal of these displayed works of art is to collectively create a relevant and significant display for the campus community. There’s a wide variety of techniques and mediums used, ranging from printed words to projected images to photographs.

On February 22nd, I attended an event in the Art and Sociology's Laboratory Research Gallery called Swift Fantasies. The event was meant to facilitate a fantasy (in this case, one involving Taylor Swift) that encouraged the viewers to participate with different elements of pop culture. For example, there were Luis Royo and Rowena Morrill trading cards provided, along with brushed and Stuart Semple's "pinkest pink" paint. Participants were encouraged to change the reality of the trading card with the paint (above are two examples that I made).

On February 16th, I attended the Concert in Close Quarters with Ahamefule Oluo and Soulchilde in the CCC. It was a very casual and laid back performance. The interactive component was enjoyable, and the artists were very flexible in their "set" (I don't think they had a list of songs to play ahead of time). The event was a sort of preview for the concert at the Clarice today, February 17th.

Today (February 4th), I attended the Choreographer's Showcase in the Dance Theatre of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. The showcase consisted of six different pieces, written by six different choreographers. Collectively, the performance could be considered mostly contemporary. Personally, my favorite piece had a more hip-hop dubstep feel, and used low and colorful lighting to create a "techno vibe."

On Sunday, January 29th, I attended Opera Terps’ “Stage of Conflict” performance. The show consisted of three opera scenes from different American operas. All were very humorous and focused on making the audience smile. Having never been to an opera before, I did not realize how over-the-top and dramatic it can be. It was quite entertaining.
