Every time I get to create one of these textural landscape embroideries my heart sings. Here’s another piece inspired by the Burren that I poured my heart into. I was especially captivated by the wide blue cloudless skies in the reference pictures my client sent me, and wanted that to be the focal point.

Note
how do you get your letter stitching to look so neat and straight? I can never get it right and on dark fabric its so hard to see the pencil marks
oh hey thanks a bunch!! it’s honestly just a lot of practice (boring i know lmao) and I use a white or light blue embroidery transfer pencil for dark fabrics! It’s super visible and fades with water/heat so you don’t have to worry about it staying on your fabric!

My collection ‘behold / beheld’ from the exhibition 'Found Among the Branches’ at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland! behold / beheld is a close examination of the variety of colours and textures present in the natural formations found in the Burren. Working primarily from memory, perception, and impression, I aimed to capture the rich physical landscape as it was experienced through my eyes. Harnessing the inherently tactile nature of embroidery and fiber arts, I developed a loose, painterly style emphasizing a variety of textural elements rather than the tight, regimented forms traditionally associated with the medium. Additionally, the inclusion of found objects including sheep’s wool, shells, and bone, allowed the materials themselves to dictate their use and integrate into the ‘landscape’ of the work. Throughout the process, it became important to me that I held each object in my hands and thoroughly examined it before including it in the work. This act of active observation rather than passive ‘looking,’ forced me to challenge my role as an outsider in the Burren, and evaluate what the surrounding landscape meant to me

Here’s my most recent project from Children’s Book Illustration. It’s a pro-vaccine book all about vaccines and how they work. This book was created with the children of folks who are anti-vax in mind, in the hopes that they will make the informed decision to vaccinate themselves later in life. You can read each page below the cut!

Embroidery inspired by @queerappalachia !! This slogan has been something that's stuck with me ever since I saw it on their page. Learning to be comfortable with myself and my expressions as a rural queer in the last year of so has been incredibly therapeutic. I feel like expressing that process through a common folk art (that's also associated with femininity) is something that's allowed me to grow as an artist and a person. Also I love radishes.
