First of all, the network clarified that Cruel Summer was going to be an anthology right after they greenlit season 2.

Second, that whole "cliff hanger" for season 1 wasn't a cliffhanger at all. We know what happens next, Jennette lives her life and Kate kills her captor and escapes. It wasn't a cliffhanger it was a reveal. The truth is more or less the same just that Jeannette never got caught by Kate like Kate thought. The story was done. All that was left would be figuring out a new story about Jennette being a criminal sociopath which might be interesting but I don't think the pathology for Jennette's character includes being a criminal mastermind. She's an opportunist and narcissist. Not an instigator. They'd need another secondary villian to make it work again.

how are you gonna create a show and leave the first season off on such an intense cliffhanger, and then give us a s2 with a whole new cast and characters without resolving any of the millions of unanswered questions from s1????
