About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.

“Which one of you holds the umbrella?”

Duo stopped short, clearly caught off guard by his walking companion.

Noin met his confusion with a smile. “You know,” she said casually, crossing her arms over her uniformed chest, “when you're walking together, which one of you holds the umbrella?

Duo had gone to Noin for relationship advice, but now that she was talking in riddles, he wasn't sure it had been a good idea.

“I dunno,” he replied, stuffing his hands into his jacket pockets with a frown, “it doesn't really rain a lot on the colonies…”

He considered the question for a moment then shrugged and replied, “and when it does we don't use an umbrella.”

Noin smirked and rolled her eyes. “Of course that would be the case for you two. Okay, fine, how about this instead. When you're taking cover from incoming enemy fire, who is the one to break cover and attack the enemy first?”

Duo scrunched his nose and scowled. “What kinda questions are these, huh?”

“Well, if Heero does love you, he'd protect you at all costs. From the rain… from enemy fire,” she replied casually. A buzzing from her pocket ended their conversation. She answered it, gave him a wink then began to walk away.

"Do you see him?" Heero's voice came as a murmur from above Duo's head. "Your two o'clock, standing in the doorway to that bar..."

Duo squinted harder through the scope of his sniper rifle, his finger lightly rested on the trigger.

"Yeah, I see him. He's got some goons with him," he muttered before taking a steadying breath, his chest expanding slowly against the itchy grass. He had been sprawled out prone on a hilltop for hours waiting for their target to show his face.

"Do ya think he's really got a bomb?" Duo asked without looking up.

"It's hard to tell," Heero replied from somewhere to his left.

Duo felt a faint tap on the top of his baseball cap and tried to ignore it. Another touched his shoulder, then the back of his boot. Through the scope he could see blurred streaks racing down his line of sight.

It was starting to rain.

A minute later a loud whoomp sounded over his head. Startled, he tore his gaze from the lens of his scope and looked up just in time to see Heero kneel beside him, an umbrella in hand.

Heero was holding it out at arm's length, using it to shield Duo's body instead of his own. In his other hand was his pistol, locked and loaded, gripped and ready.

Duo snorted and turned his attention back to his scope.

"Heh, so that's how it is, huh?" He murmured, amused.

"How what is?" Heero asked.

Duo grinned and tightened his grip on his rifle.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.

summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.

Examples:

summary: Bruce

summary: "Bruce Banner"

summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk

You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.

The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.

expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.

You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.

otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

If you go solely by kudos and hits, you miss some truly great pieces hiding in the wings. Kudos and hits are likely to go towards 1) super active fandoms, 2) well-known authors, and 3) favor works posted as part of fandom events because of the social media promo.

Nothing wrong with ANY of that, to be fair - all authors deserve love - but I personally use and encourage the use of AO3's inclusion/exclusion of tags feature. Not looking for a particular pairing? Exclude it. In the mood ONLY for smut? Exclude anything below 'explicit.' Want some hyper niche pairing dynamic? Tailor the search accordingly.

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?
