Here's a quote from someone in the comments section who works as an IT guy for Ferrari and Maserati Austria:

I am the IT-Guy,Sysadmin,Programmer all in one kinda deal for Ferrari and Maserati Austria. This is a pic of the "Internet Terminal" we got from Italy for the lounge area of our showroom. At the first bootup i heard a familiar sound ... it was the jungle dance startup sound from ubuntu, then a fullscreen browser window appears loading ferrari.com. I pressed ctrl+alt+T on the sketchy keyboard you see in the picture and BOOM .. Terminal. This thing runs Ubuntu 10.04 and autostarts Firefox in fullscreen mode. The Monitor did flicker and the fans fell out of the case because this thing is very "italian" so i had to glue it back together and it works like a charm now and runs ubuntu like a boss. If you want to know any details just ask.

Ruben Vermeersch posted a photo on his blog of Linux running on a cigarette machine in Amsterdam. Not the greatest thing to be seen running on (Smoking's bad, kids), but it's better than nothing!

Ubuntu (Presumably 8.10 due to the UI) has been spotted in a McDonalds restaurant, displaying the menus on the LCD screens above the counter. Not sure where it is, but hey, pretty cool!

Found in his local arcade, Reddit user 'otakuman' found a cabinet arcade game for 'Tux Racer', a fun free open-source game. Apparently there's also one in DisneyLand Paris.

According to Reddit user 'GameTechGuy' in the comments,

There are 2 Tux arcade games. This is the first one, and there were 2 versions: One with the "flipper" button controls and another with steering controls (like a driving game). There are many other arcade games that run Linux nowadays, primarily to avoid paying per unit OS licensing costs.

Reddit user, i_have_reddit recently submitted some images of the high street retailer, Argos, using Linux for their digital catalogues. For non-brits, Argos is a store where you can search through a massive catalogue, find the product you want which is referenced by a number, order it at the cashier and get given a number, sit down and wait for your number to be chosen by the automated computer system and collect your gifts. They also have an online store. These kiosks are touch-screen and used to search through the catalogue, saving paper (and time)!

Tipped off by darkpegasus333 on Reddit, I have recently discovered that the home improvement/DIY store, Howes, uses Linux for their POS (Point-Of-Sale) system. As you can see, it seems to run in a terminal window on KDE. Image taken by 'Ericsbinaryworld' on Flickr.

A submission to the /r/linux Subreddit 8 months ago by an Anonymous user (They have deleted their account since) shows the Debian Linux operating system being used for the Toronto Subway System in Canada. It looks to be the KDE version of Debian.

The other image is a submission by the Reddit user, 'aagavin', probably originating from Twitter due to the use of TwitPic. The image shows the X-Server failing, obviously a problem caused by the admins and not the OS! It seems GNU/Linux is used a lot for digital signage, and why shouldn't it be?

Another Linux Gaming Occurance: The Megatouch

Reddit user, mstrmanager, recently posted a comment on a submission of this blog on the /r/linux Subreddit showing a Megatouch machine running CentOS 5.2. These machines are often found in bars and are used for various fun games of all different genres, including Puzzles, Strategy, Action, Cards and Quiz and words. The games normally cost 25-50 cents per play and last generally about 3 minutes. Some of the newer machines use Microsoft Windows® Embedded Standard 7 unfortunately, but still cool to see the older machines using Linux!

Who says Linux isn't used for gaming? - Arcade Machines

Source: No Direct Source on this one sorry (Found it on Ubuntu Forums), but judging by the watermarks it was originally on the Failblog.

A group of arcade machines for 'Dead Heat', a racing game by NAMCO, stuck on an installer for something. Very interesting to see it on an arcade machine though. Who says Linux isn't used for gaming?

Linux also used for In-Flight entertainment for Continental Flights

Flickr user, Toypaj, posted an image on his photostream showing Linux being used for in-flight entertainment on a continental flight. As you can see, one of the displays is still booting. It seems to be an interactive touch-screen interface for viewing different movies stored on the plane's server hard drives. Very cool.

Fly Linux - Linux used for Aeroplane In-Plane Entertainment

Flickr user AlanSky posted an image on his Flickr photostream showing Linux being used on a plane for in-plane entertainment. He comments that the video screens weren't working, but the crew rebooted the video server a few times and they began to work. He also commented that each seat contained a PC with Linux. Awesome!

Another Wii Advert Screen Spotted in HMV.

Apparently the UK entertainment retailer, HMV, who sell music, films, games and music-tech have been using Wii on their advert screens for the Nintendo Wii. If you look back a few posts that we've made, you'll have noticed that Best Buy were using it too. Nintendo sure love Ubuntu! These screens are used to display video commercials for the Wii and Wii games.
