“The Tree of Life” as it has come to be known, is a Sitka Spruce. With a large portion of its roots completely exposed this is a testament to the species ability to grow fast in poor soil climates. A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.

It was a hard winter for me. I got into a place of comfort without growth and found myself slipping from my practices and telling myself “I’ll do x when y happens.” But ‘Y’ never came along, and it’s time to do ‘X’ now.

Even after a few months of little photography practice, these photos show my tremendous growth since last spring.

These photos were taken in an elk reservation outside of Yakima, Washington called Oak Creek. There were a few hundred elk there that day, and we watched them make their way down the mountain side into the valley were there was fresh hay waiting for them to munch on. Despite this being a reserve, these are all wild elk who have the accessibility to come and go from the reserve, which means apex predators such as coyotes, wolves, and cougars can still make their way in as well.

These were all taken at 75-300 mm, the closest elk was about 8-10 yards away.
