It’s wild because I love the side characters, but Feyre, Rhysand, and the Inner Circle (in many scenes) are honestly some of the most infuriating characters I’ve ever read about 😭

Im too exhausted to support this statement right now, but I’d love to hear your takes on it:

I think Feyre really embodied this sense of toxic masculinity from “traditionalist views”, that while everyone suffers at the hands of her doing so, people like her sisters, Lucien, Tamlin, the women in her court, etc, suffer the most.

We all know she’s not a girl’s girl until it comes to Mor. It even gave me the biggest ick the first time I read Feyre think “I’ve never had a female friend before”. Like what do you mean??? You were rich for eleven years, there were women in the village to talk to as well- you didn’t start hunting until you were fourteen- what were you doing for nineteen years? Are you that unlikeable that not a single woman will befriend you?

And I’m of the full belief that Feyre coming home after hunting, tracking her dirty ass clothing through the house with no care, belittling her sisters who do domestic labor because she doesn’t view it as valuable, demanding she gets a bath immediately and overall being a fucking verbally abusive menace is exactly the same vibe as a 1950’s husband coming back from work.

I apologize but I’ve literally never hated a character more in my entire LIFE than Feyre Archeron, and it baffles me that there are people who like her. HOW.

Fated mates is a trope. All Archeron sisters ending up with bat boys is not. It’s repetition. That is what makes it feel like a cliche. A trope carries emotional weight. A cliche just follows a pattern without depth.

SJM does follow patterns in how she writes the mating bond, but what sets them apart is not the bond itself. It is the journey toward accepting it. She has yet to write a bond where both characters are on equal footing, knowing about it before getting to know each other.

Right now, Elain and Lucien are resisting a bond that will follow them for the rest of their lives until death. They are not close. They are not comfortable. That tension creates space for real character growth. Two people who have every reason not to fall in love but still do, drawn together by a force they can’t ignore, is not a cliche. That is a story. That is what makes the trope land.

Putting Elain and Azriel together would make it the third Archeron and bat boy pairing. That is symmetry for its own sake. Even SJM seems aware of that when she had Rhys question Azriel: just because there are three brothers and three sisters, does that mean you deserve her?

Two people whose only obstacle is miscommunication fixable in one conversation make for a shit story.

Two people who are equals in every way and discover that for themselves while falling in love, especially after fighting it for so long, do not.

Those are Lucien’s first words to Feyre after she learns he was SA’d — and they’re absolutely heartbreaking.

Instead of focusing on his own pain or seeking comfort, his instinct is to protect someone else. It shows just how little he thinks his own hurt matters. There’s so much shame in that one sentence — misplaced, but deeply rooted — like he thinks his trauma somehow makes him unworthy in Elain’s eyes. He’s been carrying this alone for so long, and even when it finally comes out, his first reaction is fear, not relief. He doesn’t want Elain to see him as broken, or lose whatever fragile hope she might represent to him. She’s become this symbol of something good, something healing — and he’s terrified of ruining that.

This moment completely shifts how we see Lucien. It’s not just a quiet confession — it’s a moment of painful self-erasure.

Lucien breaking the wards constraining him to cover Elain with his jacket, snarling at the males gawking at her body in the wet nightgown. Lucien declaring himself a mated male and refusing any females, despite not even knowing his mate beyond the surface. Lucien maintaining that loyalty, even going so far as to feel guilt for his own assault at the hands of another female.

Lucien on the run, abandoning his home, and asking Feyre to tell him about Elain. Lucien willing to accept that Elain has a lover, despite the agony that it would bring him. Lucien finding Elain to be the most beautiful female he has ever seen in her current state, while others describe her to be sickly. Lucien gripping his teacup to keep from shuddering from Elain saying his name for the first time. Lucien being the one to tell everyone to take Elain outside, to take her to the sea.

Lucien traveling across the world on a whim from Elain’s visions, trusting her solely. Lucien fighting in a war and, upon completion, took off running across the shore to make certain that Elain was alright. Lucien being the only character to credit Elain personally for her assist with the King of Hybern. Lucien keeping his distance, despite how much it pains him to do so, in order to allow Elain that comfort. Lucien longing for Elain, for the bond to be accepted. Lucien offering Elain two perfect Solstice gifts, one that he learned of as a side thought and remembered months later.

Lucien Vanserra is at the mercy of Elain Archeron.
