The experience of poetry is truly perfected in friendship.

Anthem
Oh, say can you see.
can you see her?
can you see that barefoot child
sitting on the curb
with a head of Shirley Temple curls
looking up at that flag unfurled?
through the twilight's last gleaming,
it waves from above;
just enough to feed her hope
but not enough to feed her
stomach
growls are starting to sound
like bombs bursting in air
and momma says to come on in
before those red rockets glare - at least
that’s what she called them
rockets
sounded nicer than
gunshots
in this neighborhood,
hope was all there was to
“proudly hail at”
so looking up was her way
of getting out
that flag, reminding her
the world she stood on
was not a speck of stardust
lost in eternity;
that “home of the brave,”
shouldn’t refer to her own
front porch;
child, you’re not supposed
to be a soldier
yet.
