Intruders- Jessie Reyez (A Review)
Introduction
So from the first time I heard this song and watched the video I knew I had to write something on this. I have always loved Jessie Reyez, I even wrote one of my thesis papers about her song âGatekeeperâ. If I can find it I will definitely post it here. The topics that I will tackle with this one are quite heavy but it must be done. We will be looking at colonialism, the manipulation of history and the personification of nature.Â
The ArtistÂ
My girl Jessie Reyez has been making music people have been afraid to make and I will say something I donât say often; she is so underrated. I wish more people knew about her and the messages she convey in her lyrics. Her voice is also so unique and she sings with so much passion and conviction. I have watched so many live performances of hers and I havenât been disappointed so far. If you have never heard of Jessie Reyez I do encourage you to give her music a listen. Also she has a new album out called âBefore Love Came to Kill usâ, stream that ish everywhere. Â

SongÂ
Listen here :Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVhqNnFh25E
So in most of Jessieâs lyrics she does this very interesting thing which again I wish more people talked about. The lyrics of her songs usually create a meta narrative. This just means that there is a main story which possesses a message or a world view within another story. For instance using âIntrudersâ as an example it reads like a love letter and sounds like a love song. I was casually browsing the comments on some lyrics sites for this song and a lot of people just saw the song as her saying that the man is hers and these âintrudersâ or other females donât belong within their relationship. Absolutely nothing is wrong with seeing the lyrics as that alone but if you dig deeper paying special attention to certain words, you would see that this song is a lot more than what meets the eyes or ears. That is where the concept of the meta narrative comes into play. The story we read or hear on one level is a love story and the main story is about land being taken. People who would have done a little history even secondary school history know there is a term for such actions:colonialism. For a little recap National Geographic explains it to be when âone nation subjugates another, conquering its population and exploiting it, often while forcing its own language and cultural values upon its peopleâ. If you watched the music video you would see more physical representations of colonialism which I will get into but for now we are looking at the words and what they say.Â
From the first set of lines in the song there is reference to the original natives of whatever colonized land she is writing about, âI found ya, cleared land / Put down my flag /This is mine from now onâ. As someone from the Caribbean I immediately thought of the Amerindians of the greater Antilles. These Amerindians or Indigenous people are known to be the original settlers of the Caribbean and possibly that of America. There were some studies done to try and track where these people came from and the results varied. Some researchers claimed they came from the Amazon while others said the DNA found from bones matched that of people from Asia. Wherever they traveled from they are the known first civilization of people to inhabit these lands. Just those opening lines say a lot as it relates to theme and it is amazing how much just a few lines can say.   Â
There are other pieces of evidence of this song alluding to a telling of the colonization of native lands and people. In the second verse she sings â I wrote you a love song /A war song/ I'll sing it when the ships come, yeah / I'll die for my stateâ which paints the picture of the natives standing together as the ships of the foreigners arrive willing to die for their land. And that is exactly what happened. Some assimilated while the ones who rose up were killed like animals. It was an act of genocide and historical records tend to see it another way. These records refer to the Amerindian settlements as pre-history which is incorrect as pre-history implies that the colonization of the land is the main or more important part of history when all of it is our history. This is what I meant by the manipulation of history. Just like there is evidence ie artifacts and relics as proof of the Europeans âdiscoveringâ the land, there is also evidence of the first settlers. It was a fully structured civilization which involved the tools they used, the type of agriculture grown and even their burial rituals and customs. So therefore we cannot and should not see it as pre-history. For instance, growing up in the Caribbean, history was taught according to a British curriculum. It was only when I got older and more educated that I realised how biased it was. it was framed to make the Europeans look like our saviours. No sir!Â
VideoÂ
So the music video is a visual representation of this message or meta narrative that the song has. The video starts with a kind of Pocahontas like colours of the wind vibe with the main character worshiping the land. The land itself is personified as a man. Personification is giving more of less inanimate objects human-like features. The main character is using every part of the land to live and at the same time not harming it.Â
It is a relationship that functions in harmony.....Â
......until the fire nation attacked....I mean colonizers.
I feel like the Toronto-based studio, Solis Animation really studied the lyrics of the song and were able to create a video that works with the true meaning. Actually with both meanings of the the meta narrative. It functions as painting a picture of a love story but also one that shows an aspect of history that some people gloss over, that is, colonialism. I mean you canât get clearer about what this video is really about. Even taking a look at what the colonizers were wearing. The uniforms were very similar to that of either the English or Spanish military like the colour scheme and the shape of the hats. Â
I also think it is important to note that all the people who came off the ships were female. This ties back to the part of the song that infers that it is about a love story. It is to mean that the intruders in the video while describing European colonizers, are also symbolizing the other women that would want to enter the relationship. Â
As the good parts of the land were personified we also saw what happens when land is pillaged and destroyed, mainly how it bleeds. This heavily reminded me of the poem by Eric Roach called âCarib and Arawakâ from his book The Flowering Rock. The poem really speaks about the land remembering the history of the genocide of the indigenous people of the Caribbean in particular the Caribs and Arawaks of Trinidad and Tobago. The poem highlights the concept of the flowers (hibiscus) grown on the land after colonial times being a reminder of the blood and death that occurred on the land. The hibiscus because of their original and true colour being red, it symbolizes how the land is bleeding out of revenge of the past. I absolutely love this poem and if you have an interest in reading it, message me as I know it is almost impossible to find online.  Â
In these couple of frames we also see that she is willing to fight for her lands. This time marking herself with the blood of her home on her way to defend it. This shows the fighting spirit of the natives in order to protect their home. Based on historical accounts and records it states that some natives were peaceful and ready to cooperate until they were betrayed and they felt the need to reclaim their home. Â
I believe we have come to the end of analyzing this piece of art. As someone from the Caribbean I really appreciated the way this video was put together. It emphasizes a part of our history which is sometimes buried and lost. It took a little longer to pull together not only because of the the research but also things going on in real life. I hope you learned something from reading this and if you feel like you can educate me some more on the topic feel free!Â

Forgive Me-Chloe x Halle (A Review)
IntroductionÂ
I cannot describe how much I love this song and the entire Ungodly Hour album. I have replayed it countless times. So now that I have calmed down I could take this apart and appreciate it for what it is....ART. This song and video really plays on nostalgia, control and our generations idea of what a break up looks like. Â
The Artist(s)Â
So the first time I have ever heard or seen these beautiful girls was from Grown-ish. My friend actually described them as âlittle Beyoncesâ. At the time based on their content I agreed but after seeing what their music is like now I would say they are very different because of how much they have evolved.

So to the basics Chloe x Halle is a sister duo who have been singing since they were little kids and their range really proves that. Chloe the older of the two has a more soulful voice while Halle has an eerie, almost haunting voice. This is why their harmonies are so fire because of how different and unique their voices are. It just works!Â
The songÂ
Listen to it here :Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc9Y58TeZk0
So the lyrics are so to the point where I feel everything was on your face. There werenât much allusions and or symbolism but it was still very effective in conveying every single emotion. So the song explains being betrayed by an ex. As seen in most popular songs about exs they tend to be depressing ie see any Taylor Swift song (no shade) but this one had me feeling empowered. Like yes you lied but I can and will do better for myself.Â
The whole concept of âForgive Meâ is I am hurt as it is like you wasted my time and energy but I am not going to drown in it and you are going to be mad because I donât want you back. For instance in the chorus Halle sings â So forgive me, forgive me/I've been going too hard in your city/So forgive me, 'cause I'm not teary/Best believe I move onto better thingsâ So in all it is this idea of the best revenge is showing someone that hurt you or left you behind that you are happy and doing well.Â
And yâall that just the chorus.Â
These verses and the pre-chorus is the build up. It shows what went wrong in this relationship. I assume there was some cheating and he lied to cover it up according to the lyrics when Chloe says âYou ain't gotta tell me what it is/ 'Cause I saw the messages/ You must got me fucked upâ. The guy seems completely silenced by being confronted about it because he attempts to âplead the fifthâ but that doesnât even work. She is already gone!Â
From the second verse also we see that it seems she knew about the affair and just watching the relationship fade. I am reminded of some people both male and female who stay in the relationship so when they break it off...they are somewhat emotionally detached. This is a means to protect yourself because it is a common thing in our generation to âwinâ the breakup. And maaaaan I think she won because we see evidence of him regretting what he did like in the lines â Baby, don't you see, what you done threw away/Know it's hitting you, on the loop, on replayâ.Â
I can appreciate this song a lot on a personal level because after a break up while it is easier to solely slander and criticize your ex, I think it takes so much more effort to put yourself first and try to be without. I mean getting back to who you were before being in love and then being betrayed is hard but it is healthier and more productive than bad-mouthing that ex who isnât worth your time.Â
He or she is your ex for a reason right? Â
I donât think I need to talk about how flawless the vocals and arrangement are but I still am going to. As I noted previously, their voices are very different and uniquely so. The very subtle harmonies with Chloe holding that melody and Halle doing the adlibs/ background vocals is perfect for this song and its arrangement. Now I ainât no music major but the chords, the bass and the harmonies were so reminiscent of late 90â˛s and early 2000â˛s R&B Pop music with heavy hitters like Aaliyah, Tony Braxton and even TLC. I grew up on that music and it really brought me back to the feeling I had when discovering that music as a kid. I canât begin to describe the type of nostalgia I felt. Â
The videoÂ
Visuals. Visuals. Visuals. My guy, the shots from this music video totally floored me. I mentioned earlier about the arrangement reminding me of Aaliyah and so did the visuals. I literally had like 3 Aaliyah videos in my head: Try Again, We need a Resolution and Are you that Somebody. This isnât to discredit Chole x Halleâs creation, it serves to say it is so good it can stand next to Aaliyahâs aesthetic and say âhey sisâ in the most loving way. I am not sure if that was their intention but it genuinely made us 90â˛s babies happy.Â
On another note I felt like the visuals aided the lyrics. I think this is where the big brain thoughts are going to make their appearance.
DISCLAIMER DISCLAIMER this is strictly my opinion/ 3 am thoughts based on some research.
In the video there is a consistent theme of Chloe x Halle being these sexy dominatrices ie strong dominant women (mostly in a sexual way). Being a dominatrix is mainly about having control and calling the shots during sex both mentally and physically with the submissiveâs permission and kink in mind. The reason I bring up sex is their wardrobe, lots of black leather, chains and those skin tight pants. If you see a picture of a generic dominatrix outfit it is similar to their outfits. How does this tie back to the song? By moving on and being happy that leaves them in control and that is symbolized by their clothing choice. But why would they make it sexual? Because firstly sex sells and they look amazing in leather and this general aesthetic works for them. Secondly in a break up there is a huge power struggle or dynamic and the clearest way that depicts that power struggle was from the choice of clothing and props. Does it stay very true to BDSM culture? Based on some research I did yes it does aesthetically. Relating to the lyrics of the song also yes as it focuses on having that control and existing in a newly developed power dynamic. Do you see the parallels?
Aside from the wardrobe, the overall theme was dark. Like are they really digging this manâs grave? Yes maâam!. This shows how dead that relationship is and as much as he wants her back, she has to think about herself and her well being. That is so incredibly powerful. Â
Also even from the pictures I chose, there is an underlying religious tone. What I understand from it from looking at the dance and certain visuals, it is maybe a play on going to confession. Like being happy after a break up is a sin and she should repent her sins but she wonât. She wonât say sorry for moving on. She will however say âforgive me for putting me first and not crying over youâ.Â
So we have come to the end and I canât explain to you my loves how amazing this song is to me. Amidst all the chaos in the world there was a certain calm when this video and album dropped. It is inspiring to see these young beautiful black female artists communicate their experiences through art. To be honest, it kind of got me writing again and this is the product. Hope you enjoy it :). If there is anything you think should be added, letâs have a conversation, I am open to hear your thoughts.Â
And please go listen to their album Ungodly Hour...it is amazing.Â

Lonely in Tokyo-MIREI (A review)
Introduction
So I have never really heard of this artist until youtube recommended her recently and maaaaaaaan I am so happy they did because this song is pure FIRE. We have certain things to discuss this time like social issues of being famous and how that can cause a sense of loneliness. As IÂ said the song is fire.Â
The Artist
So first things first who is MIREI? Those who know help me, those who donât well we are in the same boat. So what does one do to get information on the internet? Yes you in the back, google and wiki! So based on my research she is a Japanese born artist. She is signed to 2 companies, one is in Japan (MASTERSIX FOUNDATION) and the other in America (Cool Japan Music). Her image is not that of the typical âkawaiiâ Japanese girl persona seen in media and entertainment but way darker. So far what I have heard from this song and her other music she has this R&B and Pop vibe which I dig. I like what I see so far so I would highly recommend you check this girl out.Â

The Song
Listen to it here:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIZcqNTCKnQ
So âLonely in Tokyoâ goes deep when it comes to meaning. Topics that stood out to me were a scrutiny of the Japanese idol lifestyle and the loneliness and depression that comes with it all affecting young people.Â
From reading a little into the song (and reading youtube comments) I saw that this song was written for her friend who was an idol in Japan. This song therefore discusses the issues this person and other youths in Japan have to deal with.Â
MIREI addresses the dark side of the industry and how it mass produces the same kind of artist. She is clearly not okay with this and encourages the listeners of her music to stand against it. In verse 2 there are clear examples of her views in lines like â So I dance / Lip syncing on the stage / Sing the lyrics they made / Trapped in a golden cageâ alluding to the type of content idols are allowed or forced to perform. In an interview MIREI herself stated that most of the lyrics used in some idol songs are very simple and lack depth. As someone who consumes a lot of idol content I would have to agree because I am very particular when it comes to what I listen to because after a while they all sound and look the same. I am not saying however that you are wrong for liking idol music.Â
MIREI not only tackles the music or content but also the social environment of this idol lifestyle and how it can affect a person. A part of this is a term I learnt called papakatsu. This is when young Japanese girls look for sugar daddies to buy them gifts and give them money in return for dates or showing up at events together. We see this in the 1st pre-chorus lines âOne more drink I'm right back home / One little dinner won't crush my soul /Dior bag, how can I say no?â In this way MIREI is also saying that in order to be famous or part of that world the youths have to sacrifice a piece of themselves for the money and brand name things....but itâs no big deal or it wonât crush their souls right? Â
We are left to also assume that some of these girls are from under privileged homes with the mention of money being tight and âmomâs out wastedâ making for a very unstable family life as well. Therefore if we are referring to the song these girls heavily depend on papakatsu to live day to day in hopes of becoming an idol one day. If you ask me that is such an unhealthy means to obtain fame.
From the title we know that loneliness will be incorporated somewhere in the lyrics of this song. The connection that is super important is that link between fame and loneliness. So after getting this fame by using people and sacrificing your dignity you are still lonely? Doesnât seem very worth it for me. MIREI however draws a clear line between being alone and being lonely. Like in the pre chorus âBeep beep beep there goes my phone / Why won't they leave me alone?â shows that the company that comes with the fame isnât that great and it is just people who want to be around her because of her name not her as a person. So the loneliness aspect is the lack of real socialization like making friends or even having a partner.Â
This point leads to how this loneliness causes a total meltdown of mental health. This further explores the feeling of always looking for love and belonging and never finding it.Â
MIREI says it perfectly in this line âLoved but I got no loverâ.  On the topic of love, in the lyrics of the song MIREI keeps emphasizing this aspect of paying for love âBlack suits gonâ pay for loveâ only to say later that it isnât enough saying â Money can't solve my problems (Problems) /Money don't make no change (No change)â.Â
On the topic of belonging this is highlighted in the chorus with the lines âWe are lonely in Tokyo / Neon can't light the road / Reach out in need of hope / With nowhere to goâ. There is an allusion to the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz with the use of âNeon canât light the roadâ meaning that it doesnât have a clear path to fame or happiness or finding a place to belong.Â
The Video
So this video was so simple in terms of there being a clear story line that directly correlated with the lyrics of the song. Now I love having to decipher symbolism in film and literature, I mean that is what I went to school for but this video was as clear as it comes. It follows the story of a young girl on her journey to be an idol. On the way we see the issues addressed in the lyrics that she has to deal with.Â
What really caught my eye was the use of Japan as a major back drop for the issues being brought forward. I mean globally these problems are present in any music industry but she chose Japan and throughout the song repeats the line âThere's no place like homeâ. And if I am being honest that is what makes it special because it literally paints a picture of what it is like in modern Japan, a very metropolitan area, for the youths chasing a dream. It shows that even in a place so populated as Tokyo, it is so incredibly lonely.Â
Physically the video offers some amazing shots of Tokyo both aerial and on the ground level creating an incredible aesthetic. With visuals of the lights and hustle and bustle of the Japanese people just going about their business it really depicts how people pretend to not know what is going on. They pretend like day to day the journey to obtain this idol lifestyle isnât as toxic and unhealthy as it is.
We have come to the end friends. I know there are a couple topics I could have gone into as well but this ainât a research paper my guy. I hope you liked it and would be interested in listening to MIREIâs music because the girl is talented.Â

Oh My God - (G)I-DLE (A review)
Introduction
This song and video stands out to me as being very much about female empowerment with the use symbolism. I will break it down based on what I have seen and had to kinda research to understand about both the lyrics and music video.Â
DISCLAIMER: These points are my take on how I understand the video and lyrics....nothing is black and white for me. If I missed something please tell me.
Watch it before I completely ruin this for you : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om3n2ni8luE
The Song Â
We will look at meaning first. I think this song is firstly so amazing! As stated previously this song is about female empowerment and feminism. In this day and age the term feminism has been so wrapped and inaccurately portrayed to say âwomen are better than men, shun the non-believer!â When it was mainly used to advocate equality and to shed light on some issues women go through everyday in terms of occupation, sexuality etc . Not to belittle men. I repeat again not to belittle men. So when I say this song is about feminism it discusses particularly female sexuality.Â
Maybe I am that friend that reads into lyrics too much but a synopses of the translated lyrics is that they are describing women or a woman that dreams of being able to sexually express herself freely so much that is like committing a sin. From the first verse into the pre chorus we see this giving into some sort of danger offered by an âintruderâ which can be seen as a sense of freedom. By the chorus âOh my god / She took me to the sky/ Oh my god She showed me all the starsâ there is a sense of seeing things never seen before. That in itself is so vague so I went even further beyond. If we link this to female sexuality we can say this âgoing to the sky or seeing starsâ is code for describing an orgasm. Yeah yeah yeah I know what you are saying but I said what I said, think about. The reason I thought about this is because of how sexually repressed some cultures and societies can be, going as far to condemn any expression of female sexuality in terms of pleasure as a sin.Â
The Music Video/ Visuals
This is by far such a creative music video providing so much visuals like Soyeon work! *snaps and more on topic so much symbolism. Itâs simply beautiful. The use of colours and the dance is so important in this video. So we see from the beginning Minnie is being dragged down a white corridor with this dead look in her eyes. This symbolizes a form of innocence somewhat forced upon her.
When later we see Soyeon and Soojin dressed in black dancing being more expressively surrounded by dancers. Now we also see Minnie dancing but notice the back up dancers are pulling her down and she is reaching out while Soyeon and Soojin dance freely. Â
There were certain objects used in the video which sort of justify this idea of being restrained and being set free by means of temptation. Sure colour says a lot but there is more. So objects that stood out to me were the red wine, the barbed wire and Soyeon and Minnie rolling in the mud.Â
Sticking with the concept that Minnie is dreaming of a time she can be free fits perfectly with what red wine symbolizes in dreams. Red wine usually represents sexual needs. In this case not being able to express said needs. Further the spilling of the wine infers to being seduced by temptation or into committing a sin. Based on my conclusion of the lyrics you can see how this makes sense.Â
Barbed wire through the years, has symbolized some sort of oppression. So even though in the video Soyeon seems to be more intact with her sexually we still see something holding her back and after she just says âfuck itâ in a way and licks the barbed wire maybe as a means to free herself.Â
The last one and probably my favourite is the mud. Mud is simply earth and water as we know it. In literature and dreams however it usually symbolizes a longing for the physical or material things in life. Further to dream of rolling in mud is a longing for positive romantic experiences. I love this so much because while we can class this video as purely being sexual we see this link between wanting to express female sexuality openly but also to be loved and how it is all connected. Mind=blown.Â
So in overall I love this concept and song and for me to really write out everything I picked up on or noticed (like with the other members not mentioned about) I would literally be writing a dissertation with a legit thesis statement and ainât nobody got time for that. I will try to do these more as I am home because of the pandemic at hand. I hope you guys are safe and remember to wash your hands :)Â Â

How to Start Loving Yourself
1. Start by being kind and gentle with yourself. There are plenty of people who would love to criticise ⌠So be your own protector and your own best friend.
2. Choose self-love over self-hate. Many people find they veer between these two extremes â but over time gravitate more towards one or the other (through automatic thinking and their inner dialogue) ⌠So actively reject self-hatred, and consciously exercise self-love.
3. Stop being harsh and judgmental, and accept your imperfections. Weâre all flawed and broken, and we all make bad mistakes.
