13 things i learned in 2020

nothing stays the same. without a moment's notice, everything can change and leave you wondering what the hell happened. living in the present and appreciating the small things is important because nothing else is guaranteed or permanent.

we humans are not as important as we believe ourselves to be. when the bee dies so do the flowers. when we die the flowers grow back. if we are to build a better future, we must give back to the planet by changing the ways we live on it.

time is not real. there is nothing in the laws of physics that can prove it is anything other than a human construct.

power of the people will always outweigh the people in power. the 1% are scared of us realising this and acting upon it.

home is more of a person than a place. the way i see my family has changed. all that other stuff i thought i wanted when the true treasure was here all along.

distance does not lessen the value or strength of true friendship.

self-care is by far the most important skill to learn in life. being aware of my needs, how things effect me, and eliminating harmful inputs has gone a long way in improving my physical and mental health.

social media does not offer an honest or healthy way in which to view the world. like a toxic friend, it uses our desires and insecurities in all sorts of manipulative ways. being able to take a step back and reconnect with the real physical world can be both invigorating and revelatory.

simple acts of kindness cost nothing but are as precious as gold dust.

eye contact has become a new form of communication. with masks hiding half of our faces we have no choice but to look at each other's souls. we see each other more now and we offer strangers in the street smiles from our eyes rather than our mouths.

being lonely doesn't mean we're alone. everyone is going through something. even if they don't show it.

laughter is the closest thing there is to magic. watery eyes, burning chests and aching ribs from laughing too much are the most wonderful feelings in the world.

i am much more resilient and capable than i thought i was.

Alex is kind of happy to not be the only not straight one in the band.

A scene where Julie comes home absolutely fuming and says “Guys, I need you to haunt someone.” A wide eyed Alex, slightly terrified of an angry Julie, says “Ok.” and Luke instantly, fists clenched, jaw clenched, eyes squinting, like he is pissed just because his Julie is pissed, is like “Who made my girl angry?” and Reggie is like “I will steal all of their left socks!“ Absolute chaos ensues. Alex is awkwardly knocking stuff over while Reggie steals left socks and a shoe lace. Luke is just going full Paranormal Activity in this house, messing with the curtains and blinds, knocking more stuff around, turning the TV on and off, just bonkers over whatever this person did to Julie or Flynn that Julie said she needed them to haunt this house. Post haunting Juke hugs ensue.

Strictly speaking of characters here. I don’t get why people get angry about the fact that Luke is from my 1995 and is interested in Julie. After their deaths, the boys were only in that little room for an hour. Then they popped back into the studio. So they’re still 17. Age is mental. They didn’t live through 25 years, therefore their minds didn’t age.

Just an opinion.

I just HAVE to put this out. I started watching Julie and the Phantoms because my friend said it was a series I would like.

Now 2 weeks later I'm rewatching it for the 5 time. Have fallen in love with the cast. Downloaded Tumblr again to ingest even more creativity with the story.

But most important! I got back into music thanks to this talented cast! The past week I've played almost every song on my uke and today I even picked up my guitar again!

I am so happy this happened, a little bit of light at the end of a crappy year. I hope for everybody reading this that this or this show inspires you to be creative again.

Small things that will change your life:

Each morning: Write down three things you are excited for in the day (it can be little things like drinking a tea, cleaning, putting on your favourite shirt etc.).

Each night: List three things you are grateful for (again, it can be little things that made you smile briefly, the weather, an act of kindness etc.)

Smile at people you pass on the street. It will give them a reason to smile too and you will feel good.

Do a few minutes of stretching every day. Mental health is closely related to physical health, just a few minutes of exercise every day can improve your well being.

Set a time during the day where you put your phone and everything else that has a screen away. You might not know it but staring at a screen for too long can leave you feeling frustrated and unfulfilled, which is why it is extremely important to get away from those devices for at least a few minutes a day. Instead, go for a walk, play a card or board game, meet up with friends, cook, bake, do sports, etc.

Declutter. Whether it be your clothes, books, emails, phone, social media accounts or even people in your life, take a few minutes each week to think about the question ‘What is still serving me?’  and then act accordingly to your answer. Getting rid of old things that might weigh you down and making space for new things is very freeing and definitely good for your mental health.

Accept compliments, give compliments and stop negative self talk. I have said it before and I will repeat it over and over again: Your thoughts will reflect in your life, so make sure you actively go against hurtful thoughts about yourself and others. It requires discipline and effort, but it is so worth it. You are so worth it, my love.
