Every single year, without fail, we deal with the fact that the internet is obsessed with promoting the misinformation that Ostara must have been stolen from Easter.
People will argue until they’re blue in the face…But they won’t provide citations or evidence to the contrary and the reason why is simple: there isn’t any.
If you find that celebrating Ostara brings you joy: we aren’t here to rain on your parade or stop you in the slightest.
But misinformation, even misinformation that sounds cool and serves to further rhetorical goals, is still wrong and harmful.
So, after years of promising it, we’ve finally delivered: Easter isn’t stolen from Ostara.
Have questions? We’re happy to answer!
Make sure to follow our Instagram @jewitches for the ongoing discussion!

"I'm starting witchcraft, what do I need-"
I'm going to stop you right there, homie. You don't need anything. In fact, you'll probably regret getting everything now. You'll end up with so much you don't want.
Don't even get me started on those witchcraft "starter packs"
I began my practice with a single candle—just one. A white, three-wick Bath & Body Works candle I already owned. I learned the phases of the moon, traced sigils with quiet devotion, and stirred intention into my morning coffee. I printed my first tarot deck on plain paper.
Even now, I don’t have much. Another tarot deck, a handful of colored candles, but my magic still lives in my spice rack. I steep my water in the light of the moon and sun, letting nature do the work.
A cauldron is wonderful, but so is a simple pot. A tiny, ornate bottle of sage is lovely, but so is the sage tucked in your kitchen cabinet.
You already have everything you need for the craft. Even if all you have is yourself.

Y'all know it's okay to just try stuff in witchcraft, right?
Across the internet, I see a lot of people who seem to be asking for permission to do what they want. While I see some validity in getting wisdom from others, I worry that the people asking these questions might miss out on the experience they could get from going ahead and making a good faith attempt.
"Can I do this spell even if I don't have rosemary?" I don't know. Try it!
"Can I use fruit juice as an offering to my goddess?" I don't know. Ask her!
"Can I include a pocket watch in my magic?" I don't know. See if it works!
Of course, it's not a good idea to jump in and try something that could be harmful, but if you're not hurting yourself or others and you're not appropriating from a closed practice, just give it a go! You're allowed. You're a witch with magic and power and discernment of your own. You don't have to get permission from a bunch of internet strangers. Have fun trying new things!

Signal boost time:

Sunday December 8, 2024, beginning 9:45am EST
"Fundraiser Tickets go on sale Nov 1st!
A full day of Online Workshops and more.
Proceeds go to 'BeLoved Asheville' for Hurricane Helene Relief of Western NC"
https://facebook.com/events/s/fulacht-na-mor-rioghna-cooking/1479556669421347/
________
As we all know, Hurricane Helene caused an extreme amount of damage to Asheville, NC and the surrounding area, damage that the residents weren't expecting or prepared for.
The Fulacht Na Mór Ríoghna fundraiser event is being held on Sunday Dec 8 to help raise funds for this community, with a whole slew of notable speakers throughout the day, including both Live and Pre-recorded sessions.
If you are interested and able to donate, I highly encourage it! We are all one witch/pagan community here, no matter where we live. Support Asheville and help them get back on their feet.

Fundraiser Hosts:
NC local, Sam "Bo" Thompson, magical blacksmith at Ravens Keep Forge, and author of "Metal Never Lies: An Introduction to Metal Magic", is a priest of the Morrígan and puts a great deal of energy into both his magical and smith craft while also teaching in his community. The magical items he forges for use in people's spiritual paths are beautiful, and he's an all around great guy. (His wife's tea shop, The Grove Teas and Botanical Gifts is one of my favorites as well!) You can follow Sam on Instagram @ravenskeepforge.
The Tuatha Dé Morrigan is a group that honors the Morrigan, the Irish goddess of battle and sovereignty. They host a yearly retreat for witches, pagans and anyone who is interested in learning more about this Goddess regardless of background or path, known as the Morrigan's Call Retreat.

I like tarot spreads but I often just end up not using them because the tarot ends up unfolding it's own little narrative outside the spread. The cards and their symbols talk in their own way and it can sometimes be the case that I pull out one card and it decides to play with another card (falling over it, leaning towards it or covering it).
Weirdly enough, tarot cards seem to be like the children's drawings of whatever divine force or spiritual teacher is present. What can't be described in actual language is described through pictures, connections, and relationships. A child might not be able to fully define the concept of a family with several nuances but they can draw a picture of who they consider family and that reveals a bit more.

witchcraft is not all "love and light."
it can be angry. sad. vengeful and grieving. it can be offensive and protective. it can be everything and nothing.
but it isn't always pretty.

Méiche's Hearts
Many will know of the Morrígan, but few would know Méiche, her ill-fated son.
Méiche was born with three hearts that each housed a snake. It was foretold that should these snakes be allowed to live, they would ultimately devour the world. Dían Cécht, the god of healing, took it upon himself to slay poor Méiche, burn his hearts and scatter the ashes in the River Barrow.

The Morrigan makes it rain fire and blood...
"It was then that Badb and Macha and Morrigan went to the Knoll of the Taking of the Hostages, and to the Hill of Summoning of Hosts at Tara, and sent forth magic showers of sorcery and compact clouds of mist and a furious rain of fire, with a downpour of red blood from the air on the warriors’ heads; and they allowed the Fir Bolg neither rest nor stay for three days and nights." -1st Battle of Moytura
