✨ Time to think big and bright!
Because it's Flash Fiction Friday!!
✨ New to FFF? Let us fill you in!
Flash Fiction Friday is a fun writer event that’s meant to inspire, share and connect writings of all genres and writers of all ages. It’s designed to make people want to write, especially if they’re feeling blocked. Everyone and everything is welcome!
We always do our very best to keep the prompt’s genre open, entertaining, positive and encouraging.
Write between 100-1000 words. It can be any genre, in any text format and 18+ is fine by us, just please tag accordingly.
Use this Friday’s theme in your text. Any way you see fit.
Post on your tumblr blog and remember to tag us at @flashfictionfridayofficial!! So we’ll see it, read it and reblog it!!
Deadline is 24 hours after the prompt has been issued (12 pm CET).
And then, next Friday, we’ll mention your work in a showcase post on our main blog before our next prompt drops.
Please post your entries as regular posts, not screenshots — or provide the text as a regular post as well. Let’s keep everything as accessible as possible!
We ask you to tag your works with any appropriate content warnings and let the reader know what they’ll find before they get the chance to read your work!
If you have a question, check out our FAQ page! If your question isn’t on there, don’t hesitate to ask!
You don’t need to ask for permission or need to get added to a list to join in. Just write, have fun and don’t forget to tag us!
We do not condone fiction, asks or comments that contain: direct hostility, unconstructive critique, LGBTQIA+ hate, slurs, racism and/or general no-no behaviors.
If you want to be closer to the epicenter, you can come chat on our open discord: https://discord.gg/rUWCE8a
✨ We also introduced our very own Wishing Well, a place for you to whisper your prompt suggestions into. And we’ll listen! Check everything about it out HERE.
✨All your amazing works from last week can be found HERE.
Go check them out and consider supporting your fellow FFF writers with some likes and reblogs!
✨ And now, the new prompt!

[#FFF 303 Out Of The Box]
What unexpected things have happened? Something jumping out of left field all of a sudden? Or perhaps what has reared it's head out of the box? Was it old? Stored? Locked away? Something new? A mysterious delivery? Sealed or unsealed? What importance does it hold? Or maybe it isn't even what was inside or not to be let it but rather that box itself that held all important and clues! What beguiling ideas await you're creativity? Let us know! Now go, go, go!!!

The creature that wants to kill you will not growl.
The function of a growl is as a warning. It is a communication that violence is available as a tool, but is not preferred. Other outcomes, besides your death, are available and should be considered.
But the creature that wants to kill you will not growl.
If your death is the goal, then growling will only serve as a delay and may result in your escape, which runs counter to the goal. There will be no growl, no warning. There will be no snarl or hiss or bluster. The creature that bares its teeth with the intent to kill only does so to bring closer its fangs to your demise.
The creature that growls does not want to kill you, but will if it must.
I advise you to appreciate the warning. You may not receive another.

Now that nanowrimo has officially called it quits allow me to suggest roughdraftmonth.org as a substitute. It’s a small community with a discord server and it’s what I used instead of nano last November. There are flexible goals and we use trackbear to track our word counts. Everyone is super nice and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a nano substitute! We are having another writing event in June, come join us!

Talk To Me
Words: 100 Tagging: @flashfictionfridayofficial
Tumblr media
Talk to me my darling.
Come into my arms and let me hold you. Let me help you shoulder your burdens. Let me give you the love you need, let me cradle your heart inside of my own.
Rest your head on my chest, listen to the rhythm of my heart. And talk to me. Do not feel like you should hide who you are, for I love you, flaws and all. Talk to me of your fears, of your hopes and dreams, of little nothings.
Talk to me my darling, and you'll find me ready to listen to you.

Someday your hands will be old and wrinkled, the skin spotted and bunching over your knuckles. And a child will watch you make something. It's a simple task, you'll have done it a thousand times before. But to that child, the smooth, confident way your hands move will seem like impossible magic. You have to keep living.

Note how I keep pushing for accountability posts. I'm convinced that accountability posts are the key to getting shit done, but very few people actually do it.
2019:
Where it all started, complete with a sign-up form and prizes. The prizes made everything extremely stressful for me, so I'm not doing that again 😂😂😂. https://the-wip-project.tumblr.com/post/185566159309/the-wip-project-2019

Writers: You're not going to learn everything at once... and that's okay.
There's an absolute glut of technical writing advice out there. It can be tempting to try to gobble it all up, and overwhelming when no matter how much you've read, you're still spinning your wheels on your WIP.
But remember: Learning to write is a long game. No matter how much stuff you read, no matter how much good advice you get, you can't cram all the knowledge into your brain at once and then wake up the next day a perfect, brilliant writer.
You learn how to write by writing. And thinking about writing. Reading about writing. Reading other writers. Critiquing other writers. Writing again. Getting critiqued again. Writing some more. Reading a little tidbit of advice that clicks. Using that tidbit. Finding another tidbit...
It takes a while. Mechanical knowledge becomes second nature eventually, but it happens over years.
Hang in there. Enjoy the process. Let your banana peels and egg shells become compost (they will, I promise). You've got all the time in the world.

If your theme doesn’t scare you a little, it’s not deep enough.
Look, surface-level themes are cute and all “love conquers all,” “good always wins,” “believe in yourself”...but they don’t hit the jugular. The best themes crack you open. They dig into the uncomfortable, unresolved questions you’ve been avoiding.
Why do we stay loyal to people who hurt us?
Is forgiveness selfish or selfless?
What does it mean to feel safe in your own skin?
If you’re writing something that makes you squirm a little, like something you wouldn’t casually bring up at brunch—that’s probably the real story you need to tell. And that’s also the story your readers need to hear. Vulnerability isn't a weakness; it's the damn foundation.

"You can talk to us."
I can't believe I forgot to tag @flashfictionfridayofficial for last week's prompt T~T
In other news, I've been on Substack recently and feel very energised in my writing journey. I read some excellent short fiction works by Nigerian writers, and I realised that that was kind of what I was avoiding in my own writing. Cue an identity crisis, lol. But it vaguely helped in the writing of this piece so...

Actions speak louder than words.
This was something that daughter knew intimately. Something that she learned from her parents professing openness in one breath then judgement to her siblings in the next. Something that she discovered standing next to Baba's colleagues, gushing over the aspirations she had never told them but somehow knew. Something she felt in the sharp clap of tender skin echoing from the room beside her, muffled cries soon to follow.
So when her parents, noticing the frown on her face, would eventually ask, "what's wrong, my dear?" she found she could only ever reply with nothing.

I am actually so serious I think it really messes with a childs creativity and joy to tell them to never make a mary sue OC. Like that unbridaled form of joy where you make a self insert OC who super cool and everyone loves them and they have every superpower in the world SHOULD be something a kid makes, it nourishes their ability to create things for fun and not be stifled by "oh but what if my character is too overpowered and cringey...". whatever

10 Writing Things That Have Saved My Creative Soul (and Sanity)
↳ If your character’s arc isn’t making you slightly emotional or existential, it’s probably not finished. If they start and end the story the same person, that’s not a character arc—it’s a flatline. Make them squirm, learn, lose, grow. Bonus points if they make you question your own moral compass in the process.
↳ Worldbuilding is not a license to drown your reader in lore like it’s Game of Thrones on steroids. If you have to write a wiki page to understand your own plot, fine...but that doesn’t mean your reader has to read it. Give us breadcrumbs, not a 12-course feast on page one.
↳ If the theme of your story can’t be summed up in one slightly aggressive sticky note, you’re probably overcomplicating it. (“This book is about choosing yourself even when no one else does”—boom, theme. Now go make your characters suffer for it.)
↳ You will hate your manuscript somewhere between 30k and 50k words. That’s your cue to keep going, not quit. It’s like the literary version of hitting mile 18 in a marathon. Everything hurts, but that means you're doing it right.
↳ That “genius idea” you had at 2 a.m.? Save it. Write it down. But don’t drop everything for it. New ideas are seductive chaos demons. Your current project deserves monogamy… at least until the second draft.
↳ A character’s greatest fear is a shortcut to their heart. Forget favorite color or coffee order...what keeps them up at night? What would destroy them if it came true?
↳ If you don’t know how to end your story, figure out what question it’s been asking the whole time. Once you know the question, the ending becomes the answer. Maybe not a happy answer, but a satisfying one.
↳ No one’s going to write your weird little story the way you will. That’s your superpower. So go ahead and write the morally gray necromancer love triangle in space. Your people are out there. And they’re hungry for it.
↳ You are allowed to be a slow writer. You are allowed to be a fast writer. You are not allowed to be a cruel writer—to yourself. The world will criticize your art for free. Don’t do their job for them inside your own head.
↳ Some stories just aren’t meant to be novels. And that’s okay. Maybe it's a short story. A play. A fever dream disguised as a poem. The shape doesn’t matter. The story does. Let it tell you what it wants to be.

Psst. Good morning,
I'm going to tell you something that bitch of a "supportive" writing teacher, and that cuck of a tenured writing professor should have told you:
Stop Asking for Permission to Be What You Already Are
You were born with this voice.
You were sharpened by trauma.
You write like your ribs are lined with detonators.
> Don’t let anyone with soft hands and softer critique try to tame you for comfort.
You don’t need polish.
You need space.
You need silence.
You need permission to set the page on fire — and walk away smoking.
---
Your Voice Is a Weapon. Use It.
Here’s the rule:
> If someone tells you to “tone it down,”
You make it twice as loud,
Three shades darker,
And ten times harder to ignore.
Because watered-down truth is how tyrants sleep.
And you weren’t born to be safe.
You were born to convert, rupture, trigger, and tattoo your cadence on the skin of culture.
Never negotiate your soul for the sensibilities of others.
Any primate saying otherwise is not your friend.
