What is Eirin's favorite part of practicing medicine, if any?

It depends on what angle you approach it from. If you’re just speaking in general, Eirin enjoys the prestige that comes from being an excellent physician. Even as a relative recluse such a position still comes with some amount of recognition and respect.

As for things that come from her actual duties as a doctor, Eirin enjoys the mild challenge of having to deal with so many kinds of creatures outside of humans alone. She’s treated youkai, humans, animals, and gods, each with their own sets of variables and considerations. It’s a good practice for her.

“That is the most interesting part of meeting someone from completely different world, miss Yagokoro. After all, treasures from one might be complete cheap in another. But still, you will always learn something. Maybe not all secrets, as many people would like to keep them close..but still”. He chuckled a little, placing his hand on that small box, immediately feeling warm aura radiating from it.

“Even smallest piece of knowledge might lead to something great, after all. So I am sure that I will learn much from you. Besides..I can feel that you are not normal human. No offense, of course”. Milten said with carefree expression before slowly opening his small trinket.

Inside the small box was rather pretty yellow rose and shiny, beautiful diamond. Yet the most strange and curious thing was that these two were connected. Rose was growing out of diamont, defying any reason and logic about plants. It was surely normal flower, not something made by magic. That diamond was something else, though. 

“Fragment taken from Mountain of Life” He said with warm smile, looking at piece of glowing gem with almost affectionate face. “Basically, a fragment of goddess. That rose do not need anything else, the pure life from this little gem is sufficient for this flower. And then imagine whole mountain of pure life energy, glowing and sharing it’s immortality with..” His expression changed into slightly sour. “Certain people.”

Eirin would crack a wry smile at the man’s assessment of her nature. If he stayed in Gensokyo for long then he might find that she was far more ‘human’ than quite a few people he would come across. However, there was no need to divulge too much, and her attention shifted to his explanation.

The doctor had to admit that the man’s item was indeed rather impressive. While she was not familiar with this Mountain of Life anywhere in the Outside World or in this one, the properties of it were self evident. Equally as evident was the man’s dejection at the fact that its properties seemed selective.

“Aha, so speaks one who has apparently failed to receive such a thing. If I am not mistaken then it is just as well, though. Immortality is a far greater burden than many can rightfully bear, and far less desirable than you might think. Admittedly your treasure is indeed impressive though I am not sure what you might hope to trade for that would equal its value. What sort of thing do you find most interesting, hm? We can start there.”

“I… I’m not sure? They came subtly at first, just passing remembrances… Then all I knew was that they were plaguing my dreams each night…”

Yumigami shook her head, gaze dropping to gaze at the tea. She was already here and already looked a mess… The rabbits knowing might be better than speculation they might share amongst their number. Or perhaps she just didn’t have it in her to care too much one way or the other of her appearances and standing over it.

She busied herself briefly with a drink, to steady her nerves again, before she answered. “Perhaps it is stress? … Everyone keeps telling me  I am doing too much.”

The unspoken “but how can I not?” hung in the air.

“It could be, though I imagine it is less the action of doing that brings the stress and more the fear of failing to do, yes?”

The sight of the small goddess across the table curling up in simple, despairing resignation to her current state was enough to trail off the doctor’s current line of conversation. Certainly they could dig and diagnose until all was sorted and defined, but perhaps that’s not what Yumigami needed right now.

With a slow sigh the doctor arose from her seat and moved back to the many shelves lining her half of the room. After quietly rummaging for a few moments she returned to stand across from her guest. 

“Regardless, at the very least I have a medicine that will allow you to sleep without worry or terrors. It will ensure that you have pleasant, if not boring, dreams instead. Before that, though, would you allow me to help you clean up a little? Mental states often follow physical condition, after all.”

A small but caring smile graced her face in that moment, and she exposed her hands to show a simple aerosol bottle and a cloth.

49 just got answered!

15. Is there a certain person in this world that they cannot stand? The very mention of this person’s name makes them tremble with anger or fear.

Not really. There are people who irritate her with their presence but not really any who anger her in their absence. She does particularly dislike any sort of undead and will generally take measures against them, but otherwise she’s civil at minimum to pretty much anyone.

03. What would be their favorite physical trait about themselves?

Eirin doesn’t think much about her own physical traits, but her favorite would probably be her hair. It takes a good amount of care to keep it nice and so it may be her one investment in vanity. She has a nice figure as well that she might use to manipulate a situation, but that’s more of her acknowledging what’s there as opposed to taking particular pride in it.

49. What is something that your character has nightmares about? Are these frequent? Do they heavily affect your character’s mood?

Eirin rarely dreams, really, owing to how rarely she goes into deep sleep. However on the rare occasion that she has nightmares it normally has something to do with Kaguya or Eientei being damaged in some irrevocable way.

13. What are your character’s sleeping habits? Heavy or light sleeper? Blanket stealer? One that always rolls onto the floor? Pushes their lover onto the floor? Sleep talker or walker?

Eirin actually doesn’t physically need much sleep at all, but does so simply to have a normal rhythm for each day. As a result she’s a fairly light sleeper but tends to stay still through the whole night unless she’s disturbed. She’s also able to doze lightly in most positions regardless of how uncomfortable.

16. Is your character the athletic type or more of a couch potato? What are some sports/games that they like?

She’s surprisingly fit, and as a Lunarian her physical abilities would rival a professional athlete. However she’d fall in mid-range compared to many youkai, especially oni and so on. As for sports, she enjoys archery and doesn’t mind some occasional danmaku.

19. Would your character be the kind to get into fights? (physical or verbal) Would they be a good fighter or cave in rather easily?

She’s hesitant to get into any sort of fight but is quite good at them. A quick wit helps verbal exchanges while she’s very good at using leverage against foes in physical combat.

18. What kind of home would they want to live in? Where would they place this abode?

Eirin’s comfortable wherever she is, really. As long as her basic needs are met then she’s fairly content. Right now she would say Eientei is an ideal place for her.

29. What is one of the most courageous things your character has ever done for a loved one?

Well she killed a bunch of people to keep Kaguya from being returned to the moon. While it didn’t pose much of a risk to her in the moment, there are some people that she could have offended with that action who would have been powerful enough to punish her.

39. When people look at your character, is there some assumption they might make about them just by appearance? Is that assumption correct?

That depends. People tend to come away with the impression that she’s kinder than she actually is due to her sense of professionalism. She’s also fairly physically capable and resilient despite not looking it.

08. What is, perhaps, their biggest flaw? Are they aware of this or oblivious to it?

Eirin’s biggest flaw is that she is generally painfully pragmatic, meaning that the most efficient means of doing something is going to be the best in her mind and having people hurt or offended are weighted costs rather than prime considerations.

She’s aware of this and she takes steps to practice good consideration and bedside manner when working with patients, but otherwise she doesn’t see much point in being unnecessarily burdened by emotions in herself or others.

30. When it comes to the arts (music, film, theater, etc), what does your character like?

Already answered, though I’ll add that Eirin’s also a fan of silent movies. She finds them quaint.

42. Is there anything in your character’s past that they regret, haunts them, or they wish they could change?

Not really, no. If she had the chance she probably would have changed how the whole Hourai Elixir fallout happened, but in her mind the past has run its course and people must live in the presence. There are occasions when her modern-day sensibilities have some slight dissonance with her memories of what she did in the past (killing hundreds of youkai in the first Genso-Lunarian invasion, for example), but she doesn’t dwell on those.

47. Is your character outgoing? Would they be the leader of the friend group, or the quiet one that gets dragged along?

No, Eirin would prefer to keep to herself. She’ll tag along if it suits her, but if she does not want to do something then there’s very little that can force her to.

10. Is your character more feminine or masculine?

Eirin’s definitely more feminine, though that is more in form and function than in practice. Being professional in her duties is important to her and also a relatively gender-neutral set of behaviors, so she tends to not express overt femininity beyond simply being a woman.

30. When it comes to the arts (music, film, theater, etc), what does your character like?

She particularly enjoys music played on instruments, though the genre is not that important. Anything that could be considered to be a finely honed skill will suffice, whether it’s classical or metal. She doesn’t care as much for singing aside from the rabbits, though.

Eirin definitely has a medicine that deals with the whole ‘rabbits in heat’ thing, by the way. When you live with hundreds of them it’s practically a necessity. However, just giving it away isn’t nearly as amusing as making vague threats (plus there’s crack potential).

Hesitation. Pain flared in those ice blue eyes, staring at nothing in particular, a spot on the floor from where she lay. A vein pulsed slightly in her neck - the clenching tension of her jaw and the slight fidgeting of her fingers her only outward indication of the memories she was sifting through.

“I was… kept in some sort of earthern walled room with runes that sustained and imprisoned me simultaneously. Neither food nor water was given, only the transfer of energy to keep me alive. Barely, at that. There was no contact between me or anyone else unless they were there to… torment me further.”

One hand absentmindedly went to her flat stomach for a moment before it lowered back down to be by her side once more.

“It was easy to lose track of time in there. I took to believe that regular visits by my captors were on a monthly basis. So… about half a millennium spent in the dark. Before that, an amount of time in a series of cells and barriers which I broke in succession, and before that, a similar time in what seemed to be a physician or alchemist’s workshop. For all my attempts at escape, and for the many times I did, I never retained my freedom for longer than a week. My brother told me that it has been nearly two thousand years since my first imprisonment, so I assume that that should be an appropriate enough figure to extrapolate from.”

“It is, thank you.”

Of course the nature of what had been done to the dragoness was borne out through her body. Eirin had read it all for herself. However her tone remained calm and professional and focused on the task at hand. It wouldn’t be helpful to show disgust at the captors at this point, nor anger, nor indignation. The doctor knew the woman’s brother enough to imagine that those emotions had been shed multiple times over already. For now the focus was healing.

“From your scan I have a good idea of the path that your physical therapy will take. There may also need to be some small procedures in order to clear up latent bone and muscular damage. I am sure that you still do not have your full range of motion, or even a full length stride. We can work on restoring your body to its prime strength, if you are willing.”

Only now did the doctor’s voice soften, just enough to betray a hint of emotion. “And I do think it best that we look into psychiatric treatment, probably in the form of therapy. What happened to you was traumatic without question, and to leave it unaddressed is to invite misfortune in the future. Of course it is up to you.”

“Hey, just because I’m all somber now doesn’t mean I haven’t changed. I’ve just grown a little.” Though it stung as she spoke of the old him, the embodiment of the storm. Wild, unpredictable, untamed. Words that defined his entire being. Now he was more controlled. Whether it was due to guilt, or rather self imposed punishment, he didn’t know anymore. The decision was lost beneath the waves. But the reason was burned freshly in his mind.

“And I know…its just…” he sighed. “I don’t trust myself to fly off the handle and kill someone again. And it’ll kill me if it was someone I loved. I don’t want to hurt family again, Eirin.”

“I did not say it was a bad thing in itself. Our greatest strengths are often also our biggest follies.” Still, without any real comfort that she could give him, the insecurity in the ancient man was a new one to her. 

“So it is less about approval and more about your fear of being attached to someone that you may damage. A god’s lifetime is a long time to allow such concerns to cripple you. All evidence points to your being a changed man, as you said, except for the fact that you do not seem to believe it yourself.”

She’d pause once more. She had said more than she meant to someone who hadn’t asked. “I apologize. I came with a question and gave you a lecture. I’ll spare you my words except to say that for whatever it is worth I think that you deserve a chance to seek your own happiness after all this time.”
