I was working with an item today that just utterly flabbergasted a part of me (the other was deeply frustrated with the catalogue record AS SOMEONE APPARENTLY THOUGHT IT WAS PRINTED ON SILK, coming back to that in a minute) … but ANYWAYS … said item is a replica of a medieval manuscript prayer book THAT IS ENTIRELY WOVEN out of grey and black silk … WOVEN … text, images, intricate grey scale, WOVEN … NOT PRINTED …

And it’s flabbergasting because it’s from 1888, Jacquard machine, IT USED PUNCH CARDS to weave these intricate pages … something like 400 weft per near square inch … IT looks like a page of textured paper, but it’s not, it’s entirely SILK … F*CK …

This is the Epitaph of Seikilos. It is the earliest complete music composition with notation ever discovered. It dates from somewhere between 100 BC and 100 AD. There are earlier examples of music to be sure - the Delphic Hymns, of course, as well as some early Japenese and Chinese ceremonial music, but it’s all either fragmented or unable to be dated due to oral tradition.

The original ‘score’, such as it is, doesn’t look like much to our modern eyes:

If you translate that into Western notation, however:

This is music that is two thousand years old. It could have been played when Christ walked the earth. And thanks to music being a universal language, we can hear those exact same notes, like a piece of history coming to life in front of us. Isn’t that just incredible?

Brithawon, the Worst Royal Potter in Ancient Greece

Ea-Nasir might have a competitor in terms of “ancient guys who flagrantly sold terrible wares” except this guy one-upped him by selling them to the king.

The Bronze Age kingdom of Pylos was a busy place.  In the southwestern part of Greece, it wasn’t the major social or trade center that central Greece or Crete were, but it was a large and well-organized Mycenaean state.  Named after the main administrative/political center, the city of Pylos, it was a political  power from about 1600–1200 BCE and had about 50,000 inhabitants.

One of them was named pi-ri-ta-wo or, probably, Brithawon.  He was the royal potter.  And he was bad at his job.

The rebellion plotline looks so fun! Really rooting for that to happen. (I'm also intrigued by the extra aliens on the goal after that.)

Copypasted the current stretch goals — the rebellion plotline is the next one up! (Aliens are a lot farther away and more of a longshot, but maybe...)

£7,500 - Game Launch

This is the baseline, getting the game off the ground!

£9,000 - Fancy Planets

At this level we will go over all of the planets on the star map and have them upgraded with more colorful, cartoony designs to add extra flair to each location.

£14,000 - Romance Graphics

We will add custom couple artwork for all of Zorana's possible marriage outcomes (more than a dozen of them!) This may require extra time to implement but can be added after launch.

£18,000 - Rebel Plotline

Maybe you don't actually want to be Empress? Maybe you don't think the monarch should have that much power anyway? If we reach this goal we will add an additional plotline in which Zorana can join forces with someone else to reform the Imperial government. This may require extra time to implement but can be added after launch.

£30,000 - More Aliens

The Celestial Empire isn't the only galactic power. If we reach this goal we will add art for ambassadors from other alien species and increase their presence in the plot. Do you want to get up close with the Spindly Walkers or the fungal Grib? This will definitely not be available at launch but would be added as a free update later.

the wicked movie marketing reminded me of how badly baum didn't want to keep writing more wizard of oz books, which were so popular that his publisher was hunting him like he was an injured deer leaving a desperate trail of blood through the snow
