Mad Men S7E8 “Severance”
Tumblr media
One of my favorite things about Mad Men is how it uses the quirks of serialized storytelling to its advantage. Each episode brings us into unfamiliar territory, as we have to reacquaint ourselves with what time it is and how the characters have moved since we last saw them. (In this episode, we’re in early 1970, which eschews the traditional wisdom that the show’d bring us from early 1960 to late 1969.) This gap reflects both us adjusting into the new time period and the time we’ve spent away from the characters, whether it’s a week or the 10 months between seasons. (Another reason I say this is the definitive show not to binge.) More than that, though, is how the show understands pilots, premieres, and finales. Each premiere shows us where the characters are and where they could go, and each finale gives something exciting and memorable to conclude an arc but also brings us into a new chapter of the story. “Severance” isn’t just any premiere, though - as the final premiere, it does a strong job of setting up the final questions the series is going to answer while reminding us of the show’s past.
Of course, the question this episode wants us to ask is the question we were already asking - is Don going to die in the finale? If the series ended as expected in late 1969, I’d say no - if we start to move steadily through the 1970s, then everything’s game. Don sure seems interested in the deceased-but-satisfied-with-her-life Rachel Menken, who seems to be the only satisfied person in the episode. As Diana reminds him at the end of the episode, death mixes things up - it can jog your memory or change the course of your life. As usual, there’s no key clues to decipher yet, just questions raised - is Rachel’s death the only one that will mix things up? Will Pete’s gun finally be used again or will Roger have a heart attack? Will anyone fall through the Season 5 Elevator Shaft of Doom? I have many strong opinions on the show, but I really have no idea who will live or who will die - I suspect the ending will be much like Ken’s never-written book, something sad and sweet.
As I mentioned before, this is the final season premiere of Mad Men, and Matthew Weiner seemed to make it his mission to loop back through the rest of the series as much as possible. Don is largely back in his Season 1 mindset, as he’s got his old office back, sleeps with every woman he meets, and is generally unhappy. It feels like a step back after the last run of episodes, where Don was in new territory and growing almost weekly, but we’ll have to see more than this episode to know for sure where he’s going. His run-ins with Rachel and Diana (who, I suspect, intentionally reminded me of Midge), brings us back to the two women he chased in the pilot. Peggy and Joan’s meeting with McCann reminded us of the rampant sexism that’s still everywhere (and how the show relied on sexism for shock value early on), even for women as accomplished as those two. (Their sniping in the elevator was ugly but very true to the characters - they may have similar life experiences, but they’re coming from different angles.) There were a ton of other callbacks, between Joan’s time working at the store and Don’s latest casting girl cleaning in her underwear like Megan once did. It’s unclear if this will continue throughout the season or if it was a deliberate choice for just this episode, but it’s smart to acknowledge inside the text, along with the barrage of AMC ads reminding us, that yes, this is the end. Even if we’re not ready for it.
Just in case you didn’t get it was 1970, Roger and Ted’s insane mustaches should’ve clued you in.
Ray Wise talking excitedly about Pop-Tarts is always welcome in my home.
I suspect that when we’re looking at this batch of seven episodes, this’ll be one of the weakest entries. While Mad Men premieres always do their jobs very well, it’s tough for any premiere to actually be the best episode in a season. Because the show does so little hand-holding, it has to build an entire episode around setting a new status quo.
No idea if Stevie is going to stick around or if he just represents how the office is Peggy’s home and she’s more adventurous when drunk. I doubt Peggy’s endgame is to get married, either way.
I think Pete’s remark that California felt like a dream is just Weiner directly contributing to my future paper about California-as-dreamstate. Thanks, Matt!
Poor Ken Cosgrove - the way McCann wanted him gone led him to come back and seek revenge. I have something to say about how the show turns former important supporting characters into small, weird punchlines, but I’ll save that for a later week.
Pete complaining that he really didn’t get that much money from the McCann deal and how the money he got gives him problems is a very Pete thing to do.

THE PLAN...
Commander: Are you there? U-G Sector 1, can you hear me?
KB A-1: Yes commander, this is U-G Sector 1, Base Division.
Commander: Sorry we haven't been able to talk for months now, communication systems were down. We're back online now.
KB A-1: Thank the Stars, so many developments.
Commander: Is he still there?
KB-A1: Agent KG M-7 is still in play Sir.
Commander: Perfect. Where are we with the mega-reactors?
KB A-1: Bujagali is working perfectly pending our usual upgrade. Karuma will be up and running soon we hope.
Commander: We're running out of time. For the plan to work the humans must not find out the true identity of Agent KG M-7.
KB A-1: At first I thought the male human they keep chasing around and throwing on their rules and regulations enforcement patrol transportation was an undercover agent from another planet trying to distort our plans but he might just be one of them.
Commander: Yes, caution is advised, we're not the only ones trying to get down there. Why are they so disorganized?
KB A-1: I have no idea sir. My single worry is keeping agent KG M-7 in play and making sure the appropriate infrastructure is in place for your arrival. There's been a lot of chaos brought about by some rules and regulations and their appropriate punishments.
Commander: Please explain.
KB A-1: It's reproductive I think, I am not sure. My understanding is that the suits designed for the females should not expose their bodies. KG M-7 says he has it all under control.
Commander: I can’t comprehend the connection between reproduction and their suits, I advise you to gather more comprehensible data on this situation.
KB A-1: Will do, Sir.
Commander: And B-Black?
KB A-1: B-Black was neutralized for awhile, but she won't quit.
Commander: Do they know where she came from?
KB A-1: No Sir. But she's of no immediate concern to us and our plans. We can ignore her for now.
Commander: OK. Be advised, the dark matter mineral is the key to everything.
KB A-1: KG M-7 has that under control too; we just have to keep him in play.
Commander: Alright. I can't tell you how relieved we are to hear from you. This is a very good update considering how long we hadn’t been in touch.
KB A-1: I agree, Sir.
Commander: Our agent in U-S Sector 1, Base Division is about to get online, we've been getting hourly updates from him so you can imagine how busy it is out there.
KB A-1: No Sir, I honestly can't. Sir before I forget, KG M-7 has been mounted with pressure concerning something called AID to this Division, advise contact in U-S Sector 1 to remedy this situation.
Commander: Will do. We have to end this update here. Thank you Agent KB A-1, we will check in again in the next 24 hours, Earth Time.
KB A-1: You're welcome Sir. My full update will be uploaded to the Mars Universal Servers.
