A new year in music... #onRepeat
// JANUARY 13TH, 2024
While others are scrambling to nail down unrealistic resolutions at the turn of each calendar year, I'm busy closing off one year of awesome curated tracks and kicking off another.
Yes, my annual #onRepeat playlist on both Apple Music and Spotify is returning again in 2024 as I strive to hand-pick a genre-diverse playlist of tunes to keep you entertained all year-long.

Finishing off a great season with a ROAR!
// OCTOBER 4TH, 2023
In a bid to drown my sorrows following the ever-so-close defeat of my Brisbane Lions in the 2023 AFL Grand Final on the weekend, I turned to a little AI project.
The goal? To create an eye-catching, multi-device wallpaper that will serve as a reminder over the off-season that we're in a strong, intimidating and exciting moment in the club's history and the best is yet to come in Season 2024!
For those of you who are wondering, the image was composed using Vancouver's Lumenor AI Image Generation service, enhanced and extended using Photoshop's new generative fill tools and brought to life using Photoshop's "depth blur" neural filter.
Fun fact:
...and a reminder that AI tools are still far from perfect - the original image created by lumenor AI featured a Lion with 5 legs! I didn't even notice this myself until earlier today when a colleague (thanks James) pointed it out to me.
Tumblr media
A little more manual "human" work by me and we end up with the final design available to download to your devices, below.

Apple Watch AFL Footy Faces
// JUNE 24TH, 2023
As per usual, it's a pretty straight forward process to get these designs to your watch. If you need some assistance, however, here's what you need to do:
Setting the face designs up on your Apple Watch
Follow the links below to the team face designs you want to get your hands on.
Use whatever method works for you to get those designs into "Photos" on your paired iPhone.
Open the "Watch" app on your iPhone.
Tap on the "Face Gallery" tab at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll down and select the "Photos" face option.
Select "Photos" as the content type.
Select the team face designs from those you saved to your iPhone and "Add" them.
Make sure that you have the "Time Position" set to "Bottom".
Select the "Complications" that you want accompanying the time on your custom team face.
Scroll back up to the top of the screen and tap the "ADD" button to add your new team watch face to "My Faces".
...and you're all done!

AFL Teams by Adobe's Firefly AI
// MAY 28TH, 2023
If this is indeed the case, then check out below what a couple of hours of fiddling around with Adobe's impressive "Firefly" AI engine achieved this evening, when I challenged it to reimagine the 18 AFL Clubs.
The process went something like this:
Load up Adobe's text-to-image generator, "Firefly", which is currently in beta with access by invite.
Enter a text description for each team that went something like, "Leaping male lion with a maroon mane. Background is maroon, blue and gold swirling smoke and lightning".
Keep generating and/or regenerating images until I find "the one" that resonates with me!
And here's what Firefly came up with...

City and Colour delivers "Weightless" for CBC Music Live
// MAY 22ND, 2023
As part of the performance, he pulled out a couple of old belters including "Weightless" which has to be one of my absolute favourite songs of the past... well, since my time living in Dallas' native Canada, over a decade ago now.
It's just a ripping good rock tune that always reminds me of my time living Vancouver, my home away from home, and that is delievered flawlessly here as part of this studio special.

Brisbane Lions 2023 pre-season match sim #2
// FEBRUARY 4TH, 2023
I left the relative comfort of an air-conditioned work-from-home office with my daughter and headed a few short minutes' drive away to Hickey Park, the home of the Wilston Grange Gorillas and today's host of the Brisbane Lions' second open pre-season match sim practice. I'm always so thankful for the opportunity to attend these pre-season sessions for a bunch of reasons. The opportunity to have an hour behind the lens is certainly a welcome bonus, but just the chance to see your AFL team have a run on the paddock during February certainly helps get you all fired up for the coming season.

AFLW Lions vs Demons at Hickey Park
View post
Despite the life-sapping humidity out there today, there were a number of players who noticeably used the session to impress. For me, it was the likes of Linc McCarthy, Will Ashcroft, Lachie Neale, Cam Rayner off half-back again, and Jack Gunston up front that showed great form for this stage of the year.
My opinion doesn't hold much sway compared to the experts, however, so here's what respected journo Michael Whiting (aka Fish) had to say on AFL.com and Lions coach Chris Fagan had to say on the lions.com.au website:
With regular midfield options Dayne Zorko, Hugh McCluggage and Jarrod Berry all rested, Ashcroft, Dunkley and Neale were a class above as Chris Fagan orchestrated a virtual 'best against the rest' simulation.
Early days, Jack [Gunston] got free and we weren't looking for him because we weren't used to playing with him but we had a chat about that and reminded the boys outside 50 of how good Jack is at leading at the last moment and getting some space and as a result we found him a few times.
From my lens...
Photos with the players
Just a quick shout out and thanks to the club and especially the players for making themselves available for autographs and photos with the kids following the practice session in swealtering conditions.
You can't put a dollar value on the size of the smiles a photo with your hero players creates. Just ask my daughter. After pics and quick chats with some of her absolute favourite players like Cam Rayner, Zac Bailey, Lachie Neale and Coach Fages, she was absolutely buzzing!

Brisbane Lions 2023 pre-season match sim
// JANUARY 27TH, 2023
It's always super speculative and premature to make any sort of definitive calls observing a session such as this, but for what it's worth, here's a few things I did notice.
Firstly, the absence from the full-contact match sim from the likes of Neale, Daniher, Berry, Zorko and Bailey. Lachie was the only one of those names who didn't make an appearance at all.
A lot has been said about captain Zorko's shape this pre-season. And while he didn't partake in the match sim, he definitely looked lighter, leaner and running laps with a lot more freedom than I can remember at any time over the last season and a bit.
Cam Rayner was the stand out surprise showcasing his explosive tackle-breaking strength out of half-back. His interchange with Daniel Rich may be an early sign of things to come.
Wil Ashcroft looked right at home with clean hands playing on the ball for the entire sim session. He was everywhere in the opening 10 minutes and looks a certainty to be on-field for the season's opening bounce.
Dev Robertson looked sharp and dangerous in the forward 50m. I'd love for him to have a breakout year in 2023 - he certainly looks ripe for that to happen.
Likewise, gun recruits Gunston and Dunkley were present and visible as the sim played out with Gunston finding plenty of space in the forward line and Dunkley racking up clean possessions all around the ground.

Embarrassment of riches forward of the ball for Brisbane when Cam Rayner is being used as a half-back. Potentially preparing for life after Daniel Rich…
— Mitch Cleary (@cleary_mitch) January 27, 2023
At the first break here: -Ashcroft probably BoG -Rayner playing half back and looking good there -Dunkley very, very good -Reckon Darcy Wilmot is now a best 22 lock Few mainstays missing. No Lachie, Zac, Joe, or Zork. Might be a couple of others out too.

Gold Coast Suns Guernsey Concept

This time, it's the Collingwood Football Club, who currently claim AFL rights to the "prison bars" syle guernsey, who have stoked the fire by suggesting that they might be:
...prepared to allow Port Adelaide to wear its prison bar jumper once a season if the Power was prepared to use teal instead of white on the bottom panel of the historic strip.
As reported in the Herald Sun this morning, the Pies are not prepared to let Port Adelaide wear a black and white striped guernsey. But, in a move that can only be described as an insult, they seem ok with this less-than-palettable alternate:
Source: Herald Sun
So will there ever be a mutual solution to this ongoing saga? Probably not. But if "black and white stripes" appear to be the specific point of contention here? Why not just add in some teal detailing to the stripes. Something like this perhaps?
What do you think?
Let me know in the comments section below.

AFL Chrome Browser Themes
// MAY 31ST, 2022
I'll make this quick and just let you get stuck in. Basically:
I made some cool browser themes for Firefox-using AFL and NRL fans.
A bunch of Chrome-using NRL peeps got their backs up crying out for some love.
I obliged.
We all know my true-allegiance will always be to AFL and my fellow Brisbane Lions fans, so here's the opportunity for Chrome users to decorate their "new tabs" with their favourite club's colours!
⚙️ What you need to install your team's theme:
1. Grab your team's wallpaper
Use the prompts to download the wallpaper of your team from the selection below to your desktop or somewhere you'll remember to find the image for step 4 below.
2. Open the Chrome customisation options panel
Open your Google Chrome browser and look for the themes icon in the bottom right of the window.
3. Start by setting the correct header colour
Use the HEX or RGB colour values I've listed for each club to set the custom colour for your theme.
4. Load your wallpaper and you're good to go!
Look for the "Background > Upload from device" option. Click it and navigate to where you saved your team's wallpaper.
Load it up and you're good to go. Every time you start a new tab, your screen will be lit up in your club's colours!
