As we find ourselves in the now famously tagged "big boy month" in the 2025 AFL season, I find myself naturally gravitating towards some additional mental motivation for what's to come.

So I've dived into the ol' interwebs video archives (aka YouTube) to pick out and present to you all a selection of audio visual recaps of the amazing 2025 Premiership Season of the mighty Brisbane Lions.

🏆 Brisbane Lions: Premiership Mini-Movie 2024 (Unofficial)

Ignore the mention of "Unofficial" in the title of this one from talented Lions fan Jessica Kiss. It's quite possibly the best and most complete recap available of the Lions' premiership year and the historical club moments that combined to deliver that one perfect day in September 2024.

Sadly, Fox Footy's "Dancing on Thin Ice" documentary isn't available free to the public even nearly a year later, so the best I can do on that one is suggest you check it out if you have a largely overpriced (in my humble opinion) Kayo subscription.

In it's absence in this reflective wrap-up, I'll instead leave you with this final video from Fox Footy's flagship news show AFL 360 which features a brilliant Ted-Laso-infused montage in the opening few minutes of the video.

And with that, let's all now shit our attention to the latter half of season 2025 where the Lions are sitting confidently in 2nd position on the ladder. A tough series of games ahead of them should act as a welcome barometer in revealing where the team really sits as we hurtle towards another finals campaign in September!

I can't wait to ride every high and bump along the way - bring it on!

Design Project: Aspley Hornets AFC

How do I maintain creative sanity when my 9-5 daytime design job goes through an end-of-year-performance-review-induced lull? Embark on an unofficial, by no means asked for design project, of course! My target this time - beloved local junior AFL club, Aspley Hornets AFC.

As mentioned below, the proposal "briefly looks at a consistently presented set of logos, word marks and a modern new club monogram, as well as present digitally-focused colour and typography options for web and social media applications."

2025 AFL Indigenous Guernsey Designs

// MAY 13TH, 2025

2025 marks the the 10th anniversary of the AFL's Sir Doug Nicholls Round, with the upcoming rounds 10 and 11 games celebrating and showcasing the league's most exciting first nation's talent, as well as the highly popular club indigenous guernsey designs.

All 18 club's have unveiled brand new indigenous guernsey designs this season - each with their own individual story which I've made sure to link to below.

Yup, it's happened. I've fallen victim to the current web craze of using AI to put a playful spin on individuals of note. Seemed inevitable that I'd bite the bullet, invest in a month's worth of access to ChatGPT's famed "4o" model, and see what I could muster using a selection of the 2025 Brisbane Lions players as my subjects.

From the outset let me stress that all of the images you see below were AI-generated using the ChatGPT 4o model with some follow-up Photoshop retouching where required.

Details such as the selection of logos on the player jerseys were a bit hit-and-miss even after considerable attempts and retries, but I squeezed a fair amount of fun and satisfaction out of the mini project and hope that you all equally enjoy the results.

Here's one for the fans of the Apple TV+ hit series Severance. My 'innie' was refining for 8 glorious hours today accompanied by this theme remix put together by brilliant US electronic music duo, Odesza.

We're talking 8 glorious hours of variations on the familiar series melody to complete your own 'mysterious but important work' to.

Hot tip if you're looking for the best bit - skip along to the 3 hours, 39 minute mark when things get a little funky - a homage to one of the coolest moments of the series so far.

Team Canada - 2025 4 Nations Face-Off Champions

// FEBRUARY 21ST, 2025

Had some serious 2010 Gold Medal Game flashbacks today as the mighty Team Canada exacted revenge on an earlier tournament loss to the US - winning 3-2 in overtime.

As my wife always says, true Champions always show up when it matters the most and arguably the world's most skilful mover of the puck, Ontario's Connor McDavid delivered in golden-goal overtime off the back of a sublime pass into the slot from Mitch Marner... and the rest, as they say, is now locked in the history books.

My walking tour of Vancouver

Special shout-out to Team Canada goalie, Jordan Binnington, who kept the team in red in the game in that emotionally charged OT period with 2-3 HUGE saves including a full-stretch glove save on the goal line denying a Brady Tkachuk game-winning goal (can you imagine how unbearable that would have been)!

The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament was meant to be just a little NHL All-Star game replacement and perhaps a decent warm-up for the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina next year. But off the back of some pretty disrespectful guff coming from that orange buffoon south of the border, this final had deeper meaning.

When the dust settled and the celebratory pyrotechnics subsided earlier, we were again reminded of the recent dominance the team from the Great White North has maintained over the Stars and Stripes over the past couple of decades... and I'm all about it!

Mount Fuji from Oshino Hakkai

Chalk this one up as one of those "can't believe" our luck days as we travelled from Tokyo out to the imposing Mount Fuji region and explored the various vantage points including Oshino Hakkai, a beautiful, reconstructed traditional Japanese village with stunning views of the snow-capped peak.

With thatch-roofed houses, watermills, deep, koi-fish populated wishing ponds and bridges, it's the perfect location (if you can work around the hoards of tourists) for a traditional Mt Fuji composition.

Kinkaku-ji Temple Gardens Fall Colour

Having just returned from a brilliant 3-week vacation in Japan, I just wanted to share this shot I took in Kyoto's Kinkaku-ji temple gardens that really showcased the amazing Fall colours that are still on show late in the season.

I know the prized pink hues of the Cherry Blossom season in April are what this region is known for, but these orange Autumn hues were punching above their weight I have to say. We had such a beautiful morning wandering the temple grounds.

For the record, this shot is completely unedited and comes straight from my EOS R6 Mk II.

As a tribute to the Brisbane Lions' inspirational Preliminary Final win over the Geelong Cats yesterday, and in response to changes made to the Apple Watch "Photo Face" layout following the release of WatchOS 11, here's a few simple but classy Brisbane Lions watch faces for you to enjoy this 2024 Grand Final week!

I've previously released face designs for all 18 (+ Tassie Devils) AFL Clubs, but these updated layouts will be just the ticket for Lions fans using the "Photo" face type via WatchOS 11.

Design Project: Arana Little Athletics

For years during my junior and teenage years, I was an enthusiastic competitor at my local Arana Little Athletics Club. With my daughter now completing her 5th year competing at the same club, it's fair to say that I'm still invested in the club and how it presents itself on larger junior athletics stage.

It's been 30-odd years since I competed for the club and I don't think their logo or branding has received any love... at all... in that time. Given the club only exists due to the time and effort put in by parents and a dedicated group of committee members, I recently put in some of my own time to put the following design proposal together which I presented to the Centre Manager recently.

Finishing off a great season with a ROAR!

In a bid to drown my sorrows following the ever-so-close defeat of my Brisbane Lions in the 2023 AFL Grand Final on the weekend, I turned to a little AI project.

The goal? To create an eye-catching, multi-device wallpaper that will serve as a reminder over the off-season that we're in a strong, intimidating and exciting moment in the club's history and the best is yet to come in Season 2024!

For those of you who are wondering, the image was composed using Vancouver's Lumenor AI Image Generation service, enhanced and extended using Photoshop's new generative fill tools and brought to life using Photoshop's "depth blur" neural filter.

Fun fact:

...and a reminder that AI tools are still far from perfect - the original image created by lumenor AI featured a Lion with 5 legs! I didn't even notice this myself until earlier today when a colleague (thanks James) pointed it out to me.

A little more manual "human" work by me and we end up with the final design available to download to your devices, below.
