Understanding and Preventing Monsoon, Related Digestive Issues
Tumblr media
The main question is this - why do we tend to have digestive issues in the monsoon? The answer is pretty simple and is actually a combination of factors like the warm temperatures and high humidity. Due to the high moisture content in the air, bacteria and fungal spores tend to survive for longer, and have higher chances of contaminating food and water.
Digestive System Diseases To Watch Out For:
Typhoid
Did you know that India had the highest number of typhoid cases in the year 2021 in the world? Yep, about 12.9 million cases! Pretty sure you did not. The disease burden is only getting higher with every passing year. Typhoid is just one of the many tummy-related ailments that can strike us all this rainy season. As mentioned above, typhoid is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. Symptoms include nausea, fatigue, severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Since it is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are normally used to treat it. But, if the symptoms are very severe, then managing the condition may be more challenging than usual.
Jaundice
The liver can get affected with parasitic worms like Ascaris, and result in jaundice and related symptoms. Jaundice may be mild or severe, and the problem is this- symptoms don’t get resolved quickly. So, you may have jaundice for a few months or even years, and this can lead to further liver damage.
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea or loose stools is a symptom that is characteristic of many kinds of infections or conditions. So, diagnosing the underlying condition (like infection due to E. coli, Shigella, Salmonella etc.) becomes more important than ever. Dehydration is a major hallmark, and hence resting and replenishing or increasing fluid intake is a surefire way to treat it. That, and also making sure to eat bland or comfortable foods like kanji, curd rice etc will all help you feel better soon.
Stomach Flu
Viral gastroenteritis can cause many symptoms like diarrhoea, fever, extreme emesis (aka projectile vomiting), and just general lethargy. You can get the rotavirus or norovirus from anywhere, so make sure to eat at home, and not touch unclean surfaces. Try to be a little more mindful of keeping your surroundings cleaner than usual, if you have someone at home with these symptoms.
Let us look at some practical tips to stay safe now
●     Ensure that you drink only filtered or boiled water, whenever available.
●     Eat homemade food- which also means no more take-out for a few days. Prepare fresh food with good quality items- if you see anything slimy or smelly, throw it away.
●     Probiotics are your best friend now.
●     No street food if the food is not piping hot or prepared fresh, in front of you.
●     Make sure you have sanitiser handy.
●     Having sanitiser at the ready does NOT mean that you forget to wash your hands. So, stick to the 20-second rule religiously.
●     Use a mask or appropriate protective gear when dealing with sick individuals or if you are a caretaker. It also includes flushing the toilet with the lid on.
●     Your gut health is closely associated with stress levels. High stress means a poorly functioning gut.
Conclusion
It is pretty simple- taking good care of your health must take precedence in the monsoon, as it is easy to fall ill. There are many bugs out there ready to wage war on us, so being prepared is the only way we can stay disease-free. So, good luck, and don’t forget to enjoy the rains with some good masala chai and pakoras in hand.

How Aging Affects Digestion | Tips for Healthy Gut After 50 – Malla Reddy Narayana
Tumblr media
It is a well-known fact that our nutritional needs and digestion as a whole, change as we grow older. We also need more nutrients as we age, but cannot eat as much- which means the food we eat needs to be of exceptional quality. Ageing well is a combination of components- genetics, lifestyle and general health being the most well-known ones. This is why there is such a huge link between our gut microbiome and our food habits. If our digestive system gets affected, we may face issues like diverticulitis, constipation, MS  (Multiple Sclerosis), diabetes, depression and other autoimmune diseases like RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) respectively.
Good Digestion Tips
Indian food is generally packed with gut superfoods like curd, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric, carom seeds etc. A lot of our spices fulfil this role of aiding in digestion beautifully, while also flavouring our dishes in many delectable ways. They are all great at improving the gut microbiome and reducing bloating too. Some easy-to-follow tips include the following-
●     Avoid any food that has been problematic in the past.
●     Stay hydrated.
●     Eat a balanced diet.
●     Eat about 4-6 servings of vegetables and fruits in one day.
●     Eat smaller portions, and try to split your meals into 5-6 sittings. This will mean that you don’t feel too stuffed at one go and the meal is easier to digest.
●     Medications that you take every day may cause issues like constipation or acid reflux. So talk to your doctor for possible replacements.
How to Maintain Good Gut Health Here are our top 7 favourite tips to help you
●     Drink plenty of water so you don’t get constipated. This is because the part of the brain that controls thirst (the hypothalamus) does not function as well when we get older. Think of your gut as a plumbing system that needs to function well by moving stuff around efficiently. So, getting dehydrated is bad.
●     Eat plenty of soluble fibre-rich foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. Refrain from eating too many sweets or drinking too much chai or coffee. Two cups a day is totally fine.
●     Obesity is a major concern these days, and not eating the right kinds of food can cause issues like GERD (Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease), fatty liver disease even if you are not an alcoholic or even cancers of the colon, oesophagus or the pancreas. Obesity can also increase the incidence of being diabetic or having hypertension.
●     Get some exercise- if you do so for the recommended 150 minutes per week, you should keep everything moving smoothly. You could also lose some weight, and this is great in the long run- to improve glucose sensitivity and reduce cravings.
●     Do some yoga or meditation, or try different ways to reduce stress. Too much stress can even exacerbate existing IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) symptoms.
●     Ensure you visit your dentist every year or so, and schedule a routine cleaning or any other oral procedure without much delay. The mouth is an inhospitable terrain that is home to millions of bacteria- which can be ingested and could cause problems in different ways.
Conclusion
The gut is a garden, requiring care and nourishment to thrive.- this quote by German author and scientist Giulia Enders is a great way to summarise everything we just read. Maintaining a healthy and stress-free lifestyle is key to ensuring that our gut performs at its peak. We don’t need to get disheartened by the fact that ageing will do a number on us. We just need to be more proactive about our choices, and the rest will follow in good faith.

The Evolution of Bone and Joint Replacement.
Tumblr media
India has a large percentage of the population that suffers from joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or different kinds of similarly related conditions- almost 180 million and higher when a study was done in 2017, and it is safe to assume that the numbers must have increased by now. Joint disease can place a huge burden on the healthcare industry- in the form of medical infrastructure, specialised doctors, medicines like painkillers, surgical procedures, and related outcomes, etc. The main thing about joint disease is the chronic pain that most of us are not prepared to deal with. The dependence on drugs may be higher than usual, or conventional modes of treatment like physical therapy may not work. In such dire circumstances, a doctor may have no option but to suggest joint replacement surgery. Let us learn more about the different types and the various advantages and disadvantages.
There are two different approaches to doing joint replacement surgery- traditional and robotic-assisted. Let us learn more about them both.
Traditional Joint Replacement Surgery Is Not Obsolete
This method of joint replacement is normally in special situations where an individual may see no improvement - with injections, physical therapy, or pain medication. Traditional joint replacement is for those who have a pretty straightforward problem- with no anatomical deformity or any other related issues. It makes more sense if there are financial constraints, or there is no availability of an experienced surgeon. It can also depend on patient preference, but traditional surgery involves a larger incision made by the surgeon and will take longer to heal. The other factors that influence prognosis - like blood clots, numbing, failure of the prostheses, or longer time for rehabilitation must all be given due consideration before making a decision. The timeline for recovery is generally 6-12 weeks long, with very high rates of success (more than 90%).
Robotic Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery Is Here To Stay
In this case, a highly advanced robotic arm is used to do the surgery, while an experienced surgeon controls the arm with great precision. The main advantage is that it is a minimally invasive- keyhole-sized incision to make the repair, which means lesser blood loss and lower recovery times. The joint is also aligned more naturally, and better alignment is a major plus. Joint function is usually maintained for decades. There are very low chances of prosthetic failure.
Conclusion
The decision to go for robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery is made so that there is very precise joint repair, and to generally try and reduce rehabilitation time. But, the risks of infection, blood clot formation, failure of implantation, or nerve and blood vessel damage are never zero, and are always present- whatever the mode of surgery used. So, the mode used depends on several factors- availability of expertise and access to technologically advanced tertiary or quaternary care hospitals. Talking to your doctor will help you make a sound decision, as they can give you a realistic picture of all the pros and cons, expectations, risks, and benefits associated with each type of procedure. In the end, a positive surgical outcome is what matters, because that can greatly influence your quality of life.

Recognizing the Signs and Staying Hydrated
Tumblr media
Almost 60% of the human body is water.
Water is essential for life to survive and thrive.
Even mild dehydration can have adverse effects on our overall health and well-being.
By understanding the signs and symptoms of dehydration we get one step closer to living a healthy life.
When dehydrated, it is always crucial to take prompt action and avoid potentially serious consequences.
Dehydration Symptoms - What to Look Out For
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, leading to an imbalance in electrolytes and water levels.
Some common dehydration symptoms include:
1. Thirst: One of the earliest signs of dehydration is a feeling of thirst, which should not be ignored.
2. Dry mouth and throat: A lack of saliva production can cause a dry, sticky mouth and throat.
3. Fatigue and weakness: Dehydration can lead to a lack of energy and overall weakness.
4. Headaches and dizziness: Fluid loss can cause headaches and a sense of lightheadedness or dizziness.
5. Dark-colored urine: Concentrated urine with a darker yellow or amber color is a sign of dehydration.
Signs of Dehydration in Women
While dehydration can affect anyone, women may experience more acute and additional symptoms due to hormonal changes and menstrual cycles.
Some specific signs of dehydration in women include:
1. Cramps and increased menstrual discomfort: Dehydration can worsen menstrual cramps and make periods more uncomfortable.
2. Breast tenderness: Fluid imbalances can cause breast tenderness or swelling.
3. Constipation: Inadequate hydration can lead to constipation and digestive discomfort.
Dehydration Treatment
If you experience any signs of dehydration, it's essential to take immediate action to rehydrate your body.
Here are some easy and effective dehydration treatment methods:
1. Drink water: The most straightforward solution is to drink plenty of water to replenish the lost fluids.
2. Consume electrolyte-rich beverages: Sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions can help replace lost electrolytes like sodium and potassium.
3. Eat hydrating foods: Foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, can contribute to hydration
4. Seek medical attention: If dehydration is severe or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Staying Hydrated - Tips for Preventing Dehydration
Prevention is better than cure. Always!
Preventing dehydration is much easier than treating it.
Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated:
1. Drink water regularly: Carry a water bottle with you and drink water throughout the day, even when you're not thirsty.
2. Eat hydrating foods: Incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables into your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
3. Monitor urine color: Pay attention to the color of your urine, as a light yellow or pale color indicates proper hydration.
4. Adjust for physical activity and hot weather: Increase your fluid intake when exercising or in hot and humid conditions.
Remember, dehydration can have serious consequences if left untreated.
So, be in tune with your body’s needs.
Listen to it and identify the signs and signals of dehydration early and take proactive measures to maintain proper hydration levels.

The Importance of Early Detection
Tumblr media
Did you know that almost 12% of the Indian population suffers from some kind of cancer or related medical condition? Many studies also show that the numbers are only going to increase in the future. For males, lung cancer cases are high while for women, it is breast cancer. What is worse is that we don’t take care of our health by going in for early screening tests either. Less than 30% of cancer cases are caught by early detection tests. For the rest of the cases- individuals seem to wait till symptoms get really bad and then choose to get medical help. This delay can mean that the cancer has progressed to more advanced stages and treatment gets tougher.
Why Early Detection Is Important
Let us learn why early detection is important- it is really simple. If the doctor and the affected individual know that something is wrong, then treatment can begin in earnest. The prognosis is also much better than for advanced stages. Loss of life is also prevented and people who get appropriate treatment at the right time also tend to live longer. Yes! October is also called the ‘Pink Ribbon Month’ due to its association with breast cancer. However it does not mean that only breast cancer can be detected with early screening measures. Most cancers can be caught at early stages. But how do you know there is something wrong and when to seek medical help? You should be aware of a few important signs and symptoms like the following-
●       Any suspicious lumps or tumors need to be checked
●       Any abnormal discharge from the breast or vaginal discharge in women or when blood itself is the discharge
●       Significant weight loss due to unknown reasons and poor appetite
●       A wound that does not seem to heal at all
●       Any change in warts, moles, or birthmarks
●       Major change in bowel movements
It is possible to get vaccinated against certain kinds of cancers like cervical cancer. But for others, early screening is the only form of detection that seems to work. For other cancers, blood tests that check for specific biomarkers and detailed imaging using scans are used for routine diagnosis.
Why Are There Such Low Levels Of Detection In India?
Simple! We tend to overthink and not get medical help. Some common causes for a delay in detection include-
●       The fear that someone will die if they get a definitive diagnosis, also called fatalism.
●       Some form of miscommunication between the patient and the doctor
●       Thinking that it is a waste of time
Early Screening Guidelines-
These are some early screening guidelines broken down by age-
●       It makes sense to get annual tests done properly after someone turns 25 years of age, till 65 years for cervical cancer.
●       For breast cancer, unless there is any family history or overt changes in your breast morphology, there is no need to go in for screening.
●       Colon cancer risks seem to increase with age so getting tested annually after turning 45 is a sensible choice.
●       Women should get mammograms done every year once they turn 45. For cervical cancer, you can get an HPV test and a pap smear done every few years (3 for Pap, 5 for HPV and Pap combined).
●       Prostate cancer screening should be done annually by men who have turned 45 years of age.
●       Above 50-80 years of age- lung cancer detection tests must be done using low-dose CT scans.
●       After you turn 55, you can begin to get mammograms every couple of years if needed.
Conclusion- As with any medical condition, early detection of cancer is the only sure way to know how to deal with it and treat it effectively. Taking good care of your health should be your first priority- eat well, exercise regularly, sleep well, not getting exposed to any carcinogenic substances (meaning no drinking or smoking), not having a family history - all of these factors matter when you will begin to go in for early detection screening. So age is not the main factor, your health really is.

Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease: Symptoms, Causes & Prevention
Tumblr media
The excretory system consists of 2 kidneys, their respective ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. Our kidneys perform various functions - they are responsible for cleaning the blood, removing excess water from the system, retention of important minerals, maintenance of blood pressure, and ensuring that our bones stay healthy. It is easy to understand just how important our kidneys are, and that improper functioning can cause large-scale damage in a short period.
Chronic Kidney Disease Causes
CKD is characterized by a gradual to quick onset of symptoms which usually last for longer than 3 months. The kidneys regulate a wide range of body functions that influence other organ systems -  which means that people having CKD are at risk of developing heart disease or even stroke.
●     The primary causes include lifestyle disorders like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, aging, genetics or serial smoking, etc.
●     Others include having autoimmune diseases, conditions like polycystic kidney disease, cancer, kidney stones, infections, or congenital defects among others.
Chronic Kidney Disease Symptoms
CKD has been divided into 5 stages depending on the severity of symptoms. Most people don’t present with symptoms until they get to the further stages. We have made a list for you;
●     Changes in frequency of urination- too often or too less
●     Feeling nauseous
●     Sudden weight loss
●     Foam in urine - due to proteinuria for example
●     Numbness in your limbs
●     Swelling of extremities due to fluid retention
●     Cramping of muscles
●     Not being able to sleep
●     Fishy breath- due to the presence of ammonia
●     Not being able to concentrate
Chronic Kidney Disease Treatments
The treatment of CKD is based on managing pre-existing conditions (diabetes, hypertension, or other kidney-related issues like nephropathy. Slowing the advance of CKD takes precedence in this regard. How do you do that? By taking the right medication as prescribed, reducing daily sodium intake (this is especially significant if you already have hypertension), and making slow and sustainable changes to your lifestyle. People with CKD also need to stay away from certain drug classes that are normally used as pain medication. You also have to take any concomitant conditions into account and plan accordingly.
Conclusion
CKD affects millions of people in the world. Though there are multiple treatment approaches available, the ones that have the highest impact include those that focus on making sensible changes to nutrition and lifestyle while taking prescribed medication. Kidney transplantation is the final option available when things get too critical. Early screening can help greatly in managing symptoms and improving prognosis.

Preventing and Managing Joint Pain During the Monsoon Season
Tumblr media
The atmosphere around us can feel much heavier than usual, and that is due to increased air pressure. The high humidity associated with the monsoon, along with these pressure changes can cause some issues with our joints- and worsen already present inflammation-related symptoms. It hence makes more sense to keep moving, but in a more controlled manner, and to ensure that our quality of life doesn’t get any worse than normal.
Preventing Joint Pain This Monsoon
Let us look at the different ways to prevent joint pain this monsoon-
●     Balanced diet: Digestion also gets affected now, so it makes sense to eat light, nutritious, and freshly prepared food. This will ensure that all nutrients are absorbed as needed, and they are used to repair and heal your body as a whole. So, it is time to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and any antioxidant-rich foods into your routine right away. This also includes adequate hydration.
●     Working out in the right way: Never forget to warm up by stretching, before you begin your exercises for the day. This way, you will not unknowingly pull a muscle or get a cramp.
●     Exercise: Your routine needs to be hard enough for your heart rate to increase, but gentle enough to help you move freely and not cause any undue restriction.  A hot shower will help relax your joints and body as a whole.
●     Make some time to schedule a relaxing pain relief massage with aromatic oils to relieve stress. You could also use specific pain relief ingredients containing oils for better results.
●     Joint stress is greatly exacerbated with the wrong type of footwear. So, invest in some good quality shoes or slippers, so that your soles remain cushioned and protected.
●     Ensure that your living quarters are well-lit and ventilated, so there is less chance of a mold infestation. Dehumidifiers are your best friends concerning managing joint pain this season.
Joint Pain Treatment Approaches For This Monsoon
●     Hot baths or warm compresses help improve blood circulation.
●     Cold compresses can help relieve pain.
●     Wear warm clothing, as joint pains can worsen if the temperatures drop.
●     Eating the right types of food can also mean that you can effectively manage your body weight, reducing any excessive strain you may place on your joints otherwise.
●     Supplementing diet as needed, after consulting your doctor is another great option to stay on top of your vitamin and mineral requirements this season.
●     You can use anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain.
●     Get your bloodwork done, if you suspect that something is amiss and you have never suffered from any joint pain before. The pain may be a symptom of an infection too.
Conclusion
Joint pain is mostly chronic in nature, and since there is no cure, effective management can become challenging. The changes in humidity and air pressure impact all organ systems in the body, but the bones and joints are especially impacted adversely. Making slight changes to our daily routine, eating well, drinking sufficient amounts of water, and just moving around slowly will help improve our mood and reduce the severity of pain. Managing pain will require different strategies- not just physical ones, but taking care of mental health is also crucial. So, talk to your doctor about how you’d like to manage your condition and you could get some really helpful tips in the process.

The Impact of Humidity on Respiratory Health and How to Manage It
Tumblr media
Humidity is defined as the amount of moisture or water content present in the air around us, and it is measured as a percentage. Too much is also an issue, and too less can also cause problems. The most appropriate levels are around 40-60%. Humidity can have a profound effect on multiple levels in our body- most notably the respiratory system, brain, skin, kidneys, and the eyes respectively. Let us see how varying levels of humidity can mean different sets of health problems.
Effects Of High Humidity On Our Health
Airborne pathogen growth depends mostly on humidity- and high humidity means more of these microbes which have a better chance of infecting us. High humidity can do a number on your lungs especially, and if you have asthma or COPD, your symptoms may worsen. Staying safe and cool at home needs to be a priority instead. Some other prominent health conditions common in the summer include heatstroke, cramps, dermatological problems, fatigue, and allergies. Mold spores and dust mites residing in our houses and bedding can increase flare-ups too. The digestive system is also not spared- you have greater chances of dealing with influx, indigestion, dehydration or heartburn as the whole process of digestion is much slower now.
Effects Of Low Humidity On Our Health
Lower humidity means drier air- which can also cause other issues like soreness of the eyes, itchy skin, and other skin-related problems. Humidity levels are much lower during winters, and dry air can mean that airborne viruses do not die and stay around, leading to the dreaded winter flu outbreaks. Your eyes can feel very dry and look red, so you may be prescribed drops. Itchy and dry skin can also affect your daily life. So, be prepared to moisturize generously. Low humidity can affect the tummy by causing more bloating, and constipation and you may not feel as hungry too.
Conclusion
Our body temperature is regulated by using very delicate machinery. Any change in temperature and humidity will mean that our body will need to expend more energy to stay within the normal range. Humidifiers and dehumidifiers may hence be used judiciously. Keeping a close watch on temperatures, air quality indices, and humidity levels before deciding to go out is also a plus.

The Importance of Organ Donation
Tumblr media
Organ donation is a critical process that saves thousands of lives each year.
As we approach National Organ Donor Day on August 13th, it's essential to understand the significance of this selfless act and its profound impact on individuals, families, and communities.
Why Organ Donation Matters
1. Saving Lives: The most obvious and important benefit of organ donation is its ability to save lives. A single organ donor can save up to eight lives through the donation of various organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and intestines.
2. Improving Quality of Life: Beyond saving lives, organ donation can significantly improve the quality of life for recipients. Tissue donations like corneas can restore sight, while skin grafts can help burn victims recover.
3. Reducing Waiting Lists: Three lakh patients wait for organ donation in the country and the country's increase in donors has not kept pace with demand. Increasing the number of registered donors can help reduce these waiting times and save more lives.
4. Cost-Effective Healthcare: Organ transplants often prove more cost-effective in the long run compared to ongoing medical treatments for organ failure.
5. Providing Comfort to Donor Families: Many families of organ donors find comfort in knowing their loved one's death has given others a second chance at life.
The Process of Organ Donation
Becoming an organ donor is a simple process:
Organ Donation Registration Process in India
Complete the Online Pledge Form
○     Visit the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) website
○     Fill out the online pledge form with your details
Receive Your Donor Card
○     NOTTO will process your registration
○     You'll receive a donor card with a unique government registration number
Carry Your Donor Card
○     Keep the donor card with you at all times
○     Note: This card has no legal weight but demonstrates your intention
Inform Your Family and Friends
○     Discuss your decision to be an organ donor with your loved ones
○     This step is crucial as your family's consent is required for donation
Understand the Legal Aspect
○     According to Indian law, your next of kin has the final say in organ donation
○     Even with your pledge, the donation will only occur with your family's consent
Regular Family Discussions
○     Periodically remind your family about your wish to donate organs
○     Ensure they understand and respect your decision
Stay Informed
○     Keep yourself updated on any changes in organ donation policies
○     Follow NOTTO or other relevant organizations for the latest information
Remember: Registration is a statement of intent. The most critical step is ensuring your family is aware of and supports your decision to be an organ donor. Their consent at the time of your passing is what will ultimately allow your wish to be fulfilled.
Common Misconceptions:
Several myths surround organ donation that may deter potential donors:
1. "Doctors won't try as hard to save my life if they know I'm a donor." This is false. Medical professionals are ethically bound to do everything possible to save lives, regardless of donor status.
2. "I'm too old to be a donor." There's no age limit for organ donation. The deciding factor is the health and condition of your organs at the time of death.
3. "My religion doesn't allow organ donation." Most major religions support organ donation as an act of charity and love.
Conclusion
Organ donation is a powerful way to leave a lasting, positive impact on the world. By choosing to become an organ donor, you're offering hope to those in desperate need of a second chance at life. This August 13th, consider registering as an organ donor and discuss your decision with your loved ones. Your choice today could save multiple lives tomorrow.

Understanding and Preventing Monsoon, Related Digestive Issues
So, good luck, and don’t forget to enjoy the rains with some good masala chai and pakoras in hand
