Thank you so much ❤️❤️ • @rainbow.readerjsw I’ve had a wonderful reading month and it’s no surprise at this point that it continued with “Avenging Des” by Matthew Dante. I’ve read much of his work by this point so I’m accustomed to layered characters, passion and steam, and twist filled thriller elements wrapped up in a highly enjoyable package. Cil and Des’ chapter in the Rough Edges series is no exception and in many ways is the strongest out of the series. While escaping a mobster, Des reconnects with childhood friend Cillian and old feelings resurface as he joins Cillian’s crew and family to take down the guy trying to end his life. By now many of us tune in for the spice and steam and there’s plenty of this included in this book which absolutely no one will complain about, as well as a tightly woven, exciting and dark thriller that’s mysterious enough to propel the narrative forward with intrigue while thankfully not getting bogged down by so much detail it feels tiresome after a whole, like many thrillers fall victim to. Those would be enough strengths on their own, but what I enjoyed most was the careful way Cillian and Des’ relationship was explored through their history and learning about their shared experiences and how no one else really stacked up to the bond they had. It led to some crackling romantic tension and a deeper appreciation for them as a couple because the strongest part of their connection was beyond just physical things. And of course I always love seeing cameos and supporting roles from characters from past novels in this series, especially Seth (always) and Mickey, and I gained a deeper appreciation for Scott this time around too. I also so appreciated the found family and family bonds portrayed by Mickey and this whole group. They are a little bit insane and dark but their loyalty and acceptance of each other knows no bounds and I loved the quote I included about strength coming from respect and loyalty. I’m so thankful I got to enjoy these ARCs and I’m already excited to see what this author creates next. I always have trouble picking a favorite, BUT Avenging Des might just be my favorite of the entire Rough Edges series! Cillian left Ireland and his best friend Des behind four years ago. Since then, he’s been working for Mickey at Ye’ Old Pint as a server and barback. What he won’t really admit to is being lonely even though he spends at least part of his nights wrapped in the arms of a woman. When Des walks in to Ye’ Old Pint, it’s as if something wakes up inside him. Des is really the only person Cill’s ever felt complete with and the only person who ever made him him feel confident. But Des has brought trouble with him. BIG TROUBLE. Will Cill be able to keep him safe? What a story!!! I didn’t want it to end. I love a good best friends to lovers story and with in Cillian’s bi-awakening this story had a little more awww. I loved that Cillian, while confused at first, wasn’t upset or angry, he just went with his feelings. He acknowledged that he’d been missing something for so long and that Des was his missing piece. Oh and when Des was helping him learn to read? Please, here, here is my heart Matthew Dante, you can keep it. Des is an absolutely beautiful person. The Better Halves Club needs a mention as well. It started with Seth and then each of Mickey’s boys’ other halves joined with Scott and Skyler rounding out the S Club. Who can not fall in love with characters like these? I love this series. There is so much pull in the story and the characters are so likeable.
