Every time I try to do a BookBubs ad these days, I get scolded by BookBub for not being popular enough to get clicks so... I am thinking of abandoning subtlety, and just ignoring whatever the book I've done is actually about and pandering with a picture of a shirtless man of generic appeal, maybe with no head, and writing in big bold letters like, "BUTTSEX HAPPENS IN THIS" and "THE QUEER DUDES WILL CONFORM TO WHATEVER TOP/BOTTOM MASC/FEMME DOM/SUB DYNAMIC THAT THE LARGEST PART OF M/M ROMANCE READERS SEEM TO BELIEVE IS REQUIRED AND STANDARD FOR SOME REASON--J/K THE REASON IS M/F ROMANCE EXPECTATIONS" and then maybe list the price. idk

but that won't fit in their little ad rectangles, so maybe I should post the cover and write HERE BE COCKS on it or something.. or maybe just a picture of two roosters instead like TikTok style.

(I don't actually really care what people read or why. No judgment... well sometimes I think people deserve better porn than they get but that's another issue. But the problem with not fitting into a category is that I have almost no way to advertise because ads are based on category and "like" authors and a) BookBub does not list m/m or queer romance as categories in the first place and b) none of their suggested "like" authors are like me in any way. So I have a VERY limited space to try to advertise into, and it's a space filled with shirtless hardbody covers OR those historical/fantasy covers with flowers and filigree and shit all over them. So you begin to see my problem and resulting frustration. WHAT IF TWO FUCKED UP DUDES FELL IN LOVE AND HAD WEIRD CONVERSATIONS is... a difficult sell at the best of times lolol)

As Old As Time - Liz Braswell

This is a very interesting retelling of a classic story, Beauty and the Beast. It is an easy-read and definitely directed at a younger audience. I would recommend it if you want your kids to read something clean and sweet.

New #review #AndStillIRise (Unabridged Selections) by @drmayaangelou I've never really been into poetry but I'm trying to expand my horizons by reading or listening to books outside my typical comfort genres. I quickly picked Maya Angelou's And Still I Rise (Unabridged Selections) to listen to while I was getting dinner ready. I always love it when the authors narrate their own books because they use the inflection that's meant to be there, which I feel is super important with poetry. Her poem, Woman Work, was so relatable, even though certain aspects of the woman's work I do now is much different from the woman's in the poem. But when Ms. Angelou started singing, I stopped and stood still, covered in goosebumps. It's just that powerful. An update on the social media situation: I’ve started trying to put together a Bookbub account. 

I’ve heard of other authors doing this for a while even before Twitter started getting weird, but I think it’s about time I made my own. (I’m keeping my Twitter account until it vanishes with the rest of Twitter but still. Best to start preparations now in case.)

Thankfully, there are no other Claris Lams that exist on Bookbub, to my knowledge, so it should be extremely easy to find me and my work once it’s created. XD However, according to the site, it’ll take up to a week from now to get that created.

I did a Boobub Promo: here's what happened so far...

Bookbub international deal: $359 (US)

Category: Horror

Price: $0.99

Promo went out on the Wednesday newsletter. I was allowed to pick how long the sale would last. Based on Bookbub's recommendations, I entered a 5 day discount, taking the sale thru Sunday. The book stayed on their sight as a featured deal for that time period.

The big spike in sales was all Wednesday when the book went out. ~400 sales on Amazon.

Total sales: 663 ($252.66)

Amazon: 540 ($190.51)

B&N: 38 ($26.22)

Kobo: 47 ($16.55)

Kobo pluss: ??? (won't know until next month)

Apple/draft2digital: 38 ($19.38)

Projected real cost for prom: 106.34 (less than a trip to the grocery store)

This doesn't account for mysterious Kobo reads.

(A note on Kobo: I entered into and was selected for a spring reading feature at no cost to me, but this stacked promotions. Kobo took an additional 10% of sales. This account for the lower royalty.)

Since the promo last Wed, I already have 2 new 5-star ratings on Amazon US. ~15 people added my book To Read on Goodreads (this stat has bounced around a bit as people have actually read it or stopped reading it).

I reached #1 in all my Amazon US categories (some international #1s and top 10s) during the promo and stayed there for more than 2 days. The book also made it onto B&N bestseller lists and Kobo bestseller lists. I'd love to know how much this impacted sales.

If I had more books or especially more books in the series, I expect this would have been even more successful, but the full story of the promotion is still ongoing. All of this stuff adds up.

Compared to my feature on NetGalley last month, which cost $50 and got 31 interested readers (still no non-NetGalley reviews), this has had greater reach for less money. NetGalley had several booksellers request my debut, but I haven't seen anything from that yet.
