y'all diet culture is so insidious

I keep thinking about this interaction with my mother where we went shopping together because she wanted some new clothes for a trip. I picked up a black sweater as well because I needed one to wear to my frigid office for my day job. I chose a medium instead of a small and my mother's reaction was so overblown and horrified

she actually loudly gasped in the middle of the store, "that's a medium!!" and even after I explained that I'd chosen that size on purpose, to be comfortable and layer better over my work clothes, she was still totally aghast

the idea that I could fit into the smaller size and simply chose not to buy it was completely beyond her

this is a woman who has spent her entire life attempting to appear as small as possible. that is her primary goal when she chooses her activities, her meals, and her clothing. my mother is a very intelligent (if somewhat close-minded) person, and her psyche has been completely twisted by diet culture

I left with my sweater and she left with her outfits and we didn't talk about it again, but I still think of this regularly and how truly strange it is to assign such important value to a clothing size

This is so cool! I genuinely don't know what some of these mean, but I look forward to the research. I know the poly flag was updated recently as well, but seeing as I'm not really in that community any more, I'm not sure it's my place to correct it.

Update: adding the new polyamorous flag because why not. It's prettier than the old one, in my opinion.
