In grade school, Jimmy Buffet played the trombone in the school band. As a child he was exposed to sailing through his grandfather and these experiences would go on to influence his later music. He started playing the guitar in college and began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee, during the late 1960s as a country artist. Jimmy later moved to Key West and began establishing the easy-going beach-bum persona he became known for.

James William Buffett died on September 1, 2023 at the age of 76.

"escape" tells the story of a man who decides to cheat on his wife after reading a letter in the personal column of the newspaper by an anonymous woman asking anyone who likes pina coladas and getting caught in the rain to write to her. he writes back, and they plan to meet at a bar the next night and run away together. except... the woman who walks in the door is his wife, who was also planning on cheating and had no idea he was the one who responded. the song ends with the couple rediscovering their love for each other, since apparently even after so many years of marriage they didn't know the other liked pina coladas or making love at midnight

jimmy buffett wrote "margaritaville" about a bad day he had in key west. he lost a flip flop, then stepped on a bottle cap, and to top it all off, he couldn't find the salt for his margarita. the producer told him it was a terrible idea for a song, but he came back the next day and played it for him, and everyone agreed it would be a hit
